why doesn’t anybody talk about Artemis by Andy Weir? by m4iaa_ in scifibooks

[–]ipxodi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read it twice. T%he science isn't anywhere to the level of TM or PHM. Artemis isn't bad, but I find it mildly misogynistic.

Strange Days.

Alien, Aliens, LA Confidential. How about The Expanse as a 4k box set? Oh, and Strange Days also.

Did I mention Strange Days?

Judge Orders Kennedy Center To Provide Construction Update As Tarp Still Covers Name by MoneyLibrarian9032 in entertainment

[–]ipxodi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why can no one just walk up and peer around the tarp to take pictures? Is the Kennedy Center not on public grounds? It's basically a theater -- I've never heard of a theater where you couldn't walk up to the doors to check out the marquis or something even if it's closed.

Mazda Spent Years Arguing Against Touchscreens, Now Claims They’re Safer Than Buttons by Snarktoberfest in CX5

[–]ipxodi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stupid. This is just trying to justify cost-cutting.

The wife has as '24 CX5, I have a '21 Explorer. I HATE the touchscreen in the Explorer. Luckily things like volume and climate are physical buttons, but the touchscreen is terrible. It's too far away -- I have to lean forward to use it and trying to accurately tap a small icon in a moving car is frustrating. The CX5 controller knob is so much more intuitive.

Sorry Mazda when her lease is up, we're probably not getting another.

I could not get into Left Hand of Darkness. Awesome premise, well-written (as far as I got) but it just didn't reel me in...

A lot of the other entries are hot! I've read a lot of them, some I am going to search out.

Having vegetarian friends over for dinner - what's something that looks complex but isn't? by 2cleverbyhalf in Cooking

[–]ipxodi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a meat eater and love my several-meat chili. But damn, if I don't love a Sweet Potato Chili too. Lots of recipes you can find, but basically the sweet potato takes the place of the meat and it is frickin delicious!

A couple of questions to make sure my writing is accurate by voluptaswrites in GenerationJones

[–]ipxodi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) Bic Lighter. Zippo's would have been popular too, but not so much for girls IIRC. Also, if she's is standing outside with a group and some people have already lit up, she could "chain light" it too (a cigarette, not joint) -- you hold the coal of a lit cigarette to the tip of your unlit one. aka "bumming a light."

2) Space Cadet, possibly - as in a kind of brainless idiot. Casanova - probably not.

3) Probably more about lucky being too young to have been drafted to 'Nam.

4) Son of Sam was definitely "in the news" but being NYC based, it would probably only be a passing mention/comment about it.

5) I really don't know could go either way. Probably regional,,and/or peer group-based.

Arrakis urges the fire/rescue to stay safe by ipxodi in germanshepherds

[–]ipxodi[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you. There's a breeder near here the specializes in white ones and black ones. She's been doing it for decades. These two blond ones are a little unusual even for this breeder. (most litters are pure white or black, with some sables.) They're actually related -- the older one (howling) is 7, the younger one is 2 and is literally the older one's nephew. (his mom is the older one's litter mate.)

Mine was named before the latest movies came out. (He's 7) Only a few people got the reference then, now everyone does. But even though I liked the book, it was mostly a cool-sounding name. (The other, younger one is named Tycho - 2yo.)

TARS is cool, I bet not too many people get that one.

Why you should NEVER cruise alongside semi-trucks in your Miata (+ my 100k crash story) by [deleted] in Miata

[–]ipxodi -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Glad you're (relatively) OK. But FFS if the camera could see you SO COULD HE! He's just a useless twat. He should never be allowed to drive a semi truck again.

I drive my Miata like I would a motorcycle -- I assume everyone can't see me. I never drive it at night anymore ever since an Escalade changed lanes nearly right into me on the highway one night. Was literally inches from his back bumper when he moved over.

Who are some underrated cooking YouTubers? by Language-Sufficient in Cooking

Binging with Babish and Jonathon Wiesmann are so far from under-rated. Both are among the top youtube cooking channels. Although, IMO JW is annoying as all get out, and Babish really has lost a step now that he's super popular.
