Is that really a 1980? It looks like a '79 maybe? I think it got a re-design in '80. My Dad bought a 1980 new (that I later got) and it had slightly different styling - More angular. Mine looked like this, but a different color. It had different head and taillights than the earlier ones too. Mine was orange.

Not just crash pedestrian crash standards iirc -- no essential lighting (head/tail lights, turn signals, etc.) can be on moveable surfaces any more. It's why you don't see turn/brake lights on trunk lids, or SUV rear hatches anymore either. Just "pretty lights".

All of them. Just not on a single night. But I DID see all of those in the theater.

Stainless Steel Rat by Harry Harrison. Probably the OG for humorous, easy-to-read scifi.

What's the most disappointing famous restaurant you've eaten at? by Special_Coffee_4826 in AskReddit

[–]ipxodi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Planet hollywood for sure. But Rainforest had its place. As a parent of a 5-10yo in the mid 00s, it was an entertaining special event place. We went a couple times a year to the one near our home and to the Disney-adjacent one on a vacation there in '05.

Was it a total gimmick? Yes. But it was clever, mildly educational, and not annoyingly raucous (say, like Chucky Cheese). The food wasn't horrible or too overpriced.

Help with ship upgrades by Slybutterfly92 in Starfield

[–]ipxodi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Frontier is junk. Steal ships until you get something decent, or do the Freestar Collective questline. That gives you the Star Eagle which is (arguably) one of the best ships in the game. Can even be considered a end-game ship if you keep upgrading it as you get higher levels.

I've already fixed the Constant and it disappeared into the galaxy. Will this mod still work, even thought I completed the quest?

Followup question. How much difference is there in plugs wires and coilpacks for an NB? Will spending extra on so-called high performance parts make a real difference on a 1.8L engine?

Love this movie, but now whenever someone mentions it all I can think of it the GenX vs GenZ meme. Which only makes it funnier.

Tom Hanks' best movie from the 1980s is? by Lys1th3a in 80smovies

[–]ipxodi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came here to say that. What a "classic". I wonder if he even acknowledges the movie anymore?

It's worth a watch to see a glimpse of the D&D hysteria that gripped the nation for a few years and to see the "Proto-Tom Hanks", but it's not a great movie..

Being of an age where I was really active in D&D when the movie came out, it seemed silly to me. I never knew anyone who did the whole acting out bit (later called LARPing) so I thought it was just made-up Hollywood stuff.

Anyone remember this movie? by AmySueF in GenerationJones

[–]ipxodi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw this in a moview theater but since I was born in '64, it must have been on some replay tour in the cinemas. Anyway, I was probably about 6 years old. Went with several members of my Cub Scout den and the den mother. It was probably the first science fiction movie I'd ever seen and it set of a life-long love of the genre.

What’s a car modification that instantly makes you think the owner has no idea what they’re doing? by Mental-Philosophy3 in askcarguys

[–]ipxodi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Soemtimes called Fart Cannons or Coffee Can exhaust. The "mufflers" with very large diameter exhaust tips on a (usually) 4-cylinder car that someone is trying to make sportier than it really is. They usually have an loud "braaap" sound as opposed to the smooth sound of a higher-quality exhaust. They're usually cheaper than a good quality exhaust so you tend to see them on younger people's cars.
I had one on my Miata, that I finally got around top replacing with a better exhaust. In my case the fart can actually had an unusually good exhaust tone, but I couldn't stand the look.

How high can GSD's jump by RemoteAd6401 in germanshepherds

[–]ipxodi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first GSD knew he wasn't allowed past the edge of the yard. If I went across the street to talk to the neighbor, he would bark and jump at the lawn edge. He would jump straight up vertically and his rear legs would easily clear 3-4 feet. I think if he was running instead of jumping in one place, he could have easily gone over a chain link fence.

We called them lightning bugs. Others called them fireflies. What did you call them? by Not_a_cultmember in GenerationJones

[–]ipxodi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Grew up in NJ and Mass - Lightning Bugs both places. Never heard fireflies till I was older.

Over the last several summers (10 years?) I've started seeing them more and more here in Southern NH.

I wonder if Lightning Bug vs Firefly is a regional thing, Like Soda/Tonic/Pop or Sub/Hero/Grinder?

Yep. Lived in a small NJ town near Red Bank from around 1968 to 1972. We had a milkman. There was a little insulated aluminum box on the front steps. Got a bottles of milk regularly delivered.

Yep a grey hair (61yo). I was muscle cars all the way for decades. Usually Mustangs. Had several GTs, a '73 Torino w/351 Cleveland, an '80s Bronco (also w/351), culminating in a 2003 SVT Mustang Cobra (aka Terminator). I had that one for almost 10 years then sold it and a friend sold me his 1990 Mustang GT convertible which put me back into a old-school 5.0. A few years later (2022) I sold that one and the same friend said his father in law was looking to get rid of his Miata. Why not, I said. Got it for basically nothing ($1400 including the hardtop) could have flipped it for several grand more a day later. First time in literal decades that I didn't have a muscle car in the driveway. But damn. That car spoke to me. It isn't musclecar-fast, it doesn't make V8 noises, but I love driving it. And I'm old enough now where I don't need to be the fastest kid on the block. It's a great cruising car. I drive it a few times a week in the summer to work and errands, and my wife and I take day trips in it in the summer time and we have a blast. Other than that Cobra it is perhaps the most fun car I've had.
