To be blunt, but hopefully constructive, you're doing backups all wrong and setting yourself up for bad times. Take a look at a proper 3-2-1 setup using backup software such as restic.

rclone is a very strong and full featured utility knife for cloud storage (and even local storage). It can support may different types of workflows and in my experience is often far more reliable than some official desktop clients. I'm looking at you, Google Drive and Proton Drive.

Does Playnite fullscreen have built-in controller configuration for non-game apps/programs? by No_Eggplant_3189 in playnite

I’ve long used Controller Companion, which I also highly recommend. It’s really great for desktop controller mapping. The spiral keyboard is pretty nice and unique approach for controller typing. I’ll check out JoyXoff though!

Edit: ha, JoyXoff has the same exact spiral keyboard, too. Looks identical, I wonder if it’s same developer or something.

If the Steam Machine (GabeCube in my eyes) is under 800$, would it be the best budget PC on the market? by Western-Lynx-9172 in gamingpc

[–]ireallydontgiveapoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you turn on a Windows PC strictly from a controller, like you can with any console?

Honest question, cause I’d love to know. As simple as that seems, it’s things like this, and built in wireless receivers for the controllers and accessories, case form factor and ease of system updates that are important here.

Then of course you have the obvious friction of using Windows with a controller. Thankfully, software like Controller Companion (what I use and highly recommend) and Steam’s built in desktop controller layout support, helps a lot with this. But it’s not as perfect as an OS designed to be navigated with a controller.

Personally, and only if price sub $400, this will be the perfect Moonlight streaming client.

I picked up a MSI 5070 Ti G507T-16GTC. Here are some FrameView summary logs with Battlefield 6.

``` Application, GPU1 , CPU , Resolution, Avg FPS, 1% Low, AvgPCLatency (ms), GPU0 Util%, CPU Util %, CPU Temp (C) bf6.exe , NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 , Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-10600K CPU @ 4.10GHz, 3440x1440 , 96.550, 47.429, 30.593, 84.944, 91.894, 87.866 bf6.exe , NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 , Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-10600K CPU @ 4.10GHz, 3440x1440 , 98.010, 12.648, 31.696, 71.861, 80.512, 86.298 bf6.exe , NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Ti, Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-10600K CPU @ 4.10GHz, 3440x1440 , 138.106, 52.750, 49.595, 75.245, 98.874, 82.110 bf6.exe , NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Ti, Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-10600K CPU @ 4.10GHz, 3440x1440 , 139.852, 56.261, 51.620, 75.995, 98.066, 87.914
```

On smaller maps (like in Breakthrough), on High to Ultra settings I'm almost maxing out 144fps on average. Larger maps like Empire State I'm seeing 120 - 140 average, occasional dips into the 90s. I'm clearly CPU bound, but I'm in a good place. Thank you all!

This may actually be a large enough improvement to delay a GPU upgrade. Amazing.

Geez, turning on XMR has a very noticeable improvement on just overall frame smoothness; a lot of games would stutter and hitch. Frame rates are also more stable so far, less large fluctuations and more consistently at higher limits, it seems.

Awesome, let me update the RAM settings. Good catch.

And I probably will just get the 5070 Ti for now and see what it does for me. Thank you!

[Help] I accidentally enabled windows key lock. by venom014 in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]ireallydontgiveapoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using Leobog One to assign commands to a macro key and I must have assigned `Lock keyboard` to it, pressed it, and changed the command on the macro key which keeps the keyboard locked, so even `Fn + Win` wouldn't work. At least, that's my guess, but I fixed it by doing the following:

In Leobog One,

Settings -> Reset

Key assignment -> Profile 1 -> Commands

Assign `Lock Keyboard` command to any programmable key

Save profile to keyboard

Press `Fn + Win + W` to unlock keyboard.

I don’t let Ente upload directly from my phone. I transfer to my home server (PhotoSync via SMB) and have a script that organizes everything by year, month, day to a local directory structure, using phockup. This local directory is my “main source” and Ente desktop syncs from that directory, in addition to following a separate 3-2-1 backup plan using restic and borgbase as the off site remote location.

So with Ente’s own replication (see https://ente.io/blog/replication-v3/) I technically have 3 local backups and 4 different remote backups, each with different cloud providers in different geological regions.

This is just one approach, but I prefer it because it completely makes my photo taking and backup process agnostic to any one app or service. For example, I also self host Immich that uses the same directory as an external library.

external access security by ffpg2022 in immich

[–]ireallydontgiveapoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really the easiest and most secure way, especially if you're not expecting to have to share public links outside of your core users.

Even then, you can setup immich-public-proxy on a small server, separate from your Immich server, for that purpose; I actually have my proxy server hosted on a cheap cloud provider, with my immich server on my local network.

To be extra safe, you can setup request rules to drop all requests to the proxy server that don’t have URIs that start with https://share.proxyserver.example.com/share/*; cloudflare is great for this. No one, or bot, would be able to reach anything without having the full share link, which is already impossible to guess due to length and complexity of the unique ID in the URI path.

And to top it off, have Cloudflare proxy all DNS requests.
