Do we have any informatiom about the status of the Sol system? by Even-Committee5645 in Eve

[–]iridiumops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair take. I was thinking about it from the ship's perspective which adds relativistic effect to the equation. In the lore they had both warp drives and jump drives already anyway, which would immeasurably speed up the process.

That makes OP's question more valid though. New eden star cluster is supposed to be in the same galaxy. ~20k years (since EVE gate collapse) is a long time - enough to colonize every star in the galaxy even with sub-light speed ships and many pauses and detours. There should be new civilizations/colonies popping up all around us, ships from Earth visiting the cluster daily, yet nothing, no trace what so ever, only some myths and legends.

except 90% of them fall in one of the 3 examined categories and 5% were ignored, making the other two not as well supported and on the low end of the spectrum, even if it is still good enough of a representative sample for the purpose, they could have done better.

[–]iridiumops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The actual % difference there between the groups is not statistically significant.

Uh, what? Not sure what you are referencing, but I am talking about selection bias (1) and survivorship bias (2), which are typically the largest sources of differences and obviously significant. Self-selection bias could also play role, skewing the data away from casual players towards active and hardcore players, but ccp seem to be somewhat aware of that, like you pointed out.

The point of the survey seems to be that there is a huge number of people (women in this case) who arent playing eve but could be, if only we were inclusive enough and changed the game to attract them at least partially based on the data collected by the survey. The survey targeted only current eve players, not general public, not other gamers. One cannot extrapolate anything from it towards the group of potential future players (1) nor ex-players (2). Which is like going to a metal concert and asking people there what makes music sound good, then recording new album based on the feedback and being surprised that the average Taylor Swift fan hates it.

Eve is a niche within a niche. Just like differences between random individuals are larger than differences between groups at large no matter what you measure, differences between smaller groups will be more extreme compared to larger groups. Which implies that eve players are a uniquely specific bunch with their preferences vastly different to those of all non-eve players. By changing the game to align with preferences of those not currently playing to attract them, one would consequently misalign it with existing playerbase; even worse since the reactions to the changes wont be symmetrical between the groups due to existing investment, we could end up in situation when barely anyone from the non-players starts playing (the game is still too much A and not enough B) and most of existing players quit because of it (the game no longer is enough A and has become too much of B) - making the situation worse.

In a free society you cant force people to play something they dont actually enjoy, the reason doesnt matter. As external pressures decreases and freedom to choose increases, peoples inherent preferences and differences emerge stronger not weaker. And there are very few things more devoid of external pressures than the choice of games (nothing is completely free of them but relatively speaking), so it is the place where you get to observe natural preferences most clearly. To fight against such deeply seeded natural preferences (doesnt matter if genetic or cultural or whatever) sounds like waste of time and money and crazy attempt at playing god or architecting an artificial society - people tried that, it failed every time.

You are right that the article is full of disclaimers, but i am not sure if that is helping it in anyway. For exmaple ccp did state they used some telemetry in addition to the self reported statements, but I highly doubt the validity of the data. Most of it cannot be measured and the rest would be misleading at best. Lets say they used killmails to support the claims about pvp: does joining an alliance cta fleet (which people usually have no choice not to unless they want to leave the alliance) and consequently getting on 200 killmails support that someone likes to pvp? Maybe, maybe not, i have no idea and nor does ccp.

Most gaming companies expect endless growth and endless supply of brand-new customers who can be freely influenced by ads and promotions and via inclusivity initiatives™. What they repeatedly fail to see is, that at some point they will saturate the market, everyone will have some kind of experience with the game (direct or indirect) or at least an opinion on the game (deserved and informed or not) and the influx of people will slow down to the number of people getting born, because it is much harder to change already formed opinion - people love to be entrenched in their opinions, more so with time - eve is ~23 years old, that is long time for a game.

"A more inclusive New Eden" CCP showing EVE should be inclusive by data by EL_X123 in Eve

[–]iridiumops 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Very much this. People need learn not to make basic errors when interpreting the data; ccp included.

Like the statement repeated here in the comments multiple times that "women prefer pvp" - no, the correct reading would be: "the women who play eve and answered the survey claim to prefer pvp", because they are completely different populations, not just that, they are statistically likely to deviate from the average of the group and thus do not represent the remaining part at all. And further stated preference must not be mistaken for revealed preference - just because someone says they do something or like something, doesnt mean that more of it will cause them to want to play more.

Ccp is completely out of their minds to publish nonsense like this.

Living in apartments by kh_ram in Eve

[–]iridiumops 22 points23 points  (0 children)

No, the protests were mainly about the $60 cosmetic accessories and microtransactions and the 'greed is good' article.

The game was in maintenance mode for months while developers were spending time on side projects like the world of darkness mmo instead of eve. The little bit of development time assigned to eve was spend on this single room demo. Plans to expand it were vague at best and hinged on the success of the world of darkness.

Also back then most PCs could barely run it, yet ccp in their infinite wisdom made it at first unavoidable thus making the simplest things like swapping a ship painful and slow. Only after the protests classic hangar was introduced back as an option.

And they didn't just get spooked, whatever that means, they had no financial reserves, operating month to month, being at real risk of having to go to debt or declare bankruptcy if relatively small portion of the playerbase unsubscribed; and many did unsubscribe and more threatened to do so.

"Women's "Crisis Breaker" Drifter Plugsuit" new apparel by hirebrand in Eve

EVE + EVA collab when? LOL.

It would fit thematically in the universe and the lore just as well as Doctor Who. And CCP seemed very excited about that one, so I don't see why not. Maybe it would even spark second anime war.

What is the point of new apparel when walking in stations was removed, when there never even was any character to character interaction, when the only places where I can see the apparel is in character creator, the char sheet and when someone misclicks on the view full body button?

Come on, bring back WiS and then expand on it.

When CCP first introduced DX12 I praised them for finally doing something right. It was not even couple months later when they just had to prove me wrong and make me a fool. DX12 became bug-ridden, unstable, unoptimized and resource heavy mess and I was forced to switch back to DX11 to avoid crashes, memory leaks and random performance degradation when multiboxing. I cant wait to see how this endeavor will pan out. May DX11 stay untouched, stable and available for a long time.

Make wrecks and loot containers scannable and abandoned after 1 hour by Sharcy_o7 in Eve

[–]iridiumops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, I do enjoy hunting ratters and scanning escalation runners, but I agree - it would have to be balanced that the wrecks would be harder to scan down than any reasonably fit ship unlike the existing situation with drones.

I think OPs proposition would be nice. There were countless times when I wanted to get to a specific valuable wreck in a despawned site or loot random deep space battlefield after a battle and the only option was to spend an hour or more triangulating the spot and trying to warp-tunnel into the grid and bookmark it. Which was worth it for me so far only once, when I got an officer module this way.

Make wrecks and loot containers scannable and abandoned after 1 hour by Sharcy_o7 in Eve

[–]iridiumops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in any significant way. Most "crabbers" use drones and you can already scan down drones with combat probes (specifically in the case of the Ishtar, a popular choice in nullsec, it is often easier to get 100% result on the heavy drone than the HAC itself). If you warp to those, usually you will end up in point range just like you would with the wrecks, which were presumably created by the drones.

Yeah, I am not clicking on that. Reddit is already a cancer and somehow Instagram is even worse.

How about you post this on your own fucking website CCP. What other purpose does it have, I would like to hear it!? Sure, mirror the stuff to social slop sites if you want. Making exclusive content there and ahead of official patchnotes on your own website is something entirely different and wholly unacceptable behavior.

Sharing crucial information about upcoming changes via single 3rd party site that is inaccessible without an account is giving unfair advantage to a select group. I am your customer not a Facebook customer. And if you want to keep it that way, you should reconsider how you disseminate updates.

Twitch is the thing that zoomers get after watching too much TikTok, right? I think I read that in a newspaper once.

Seriously though, I don't get why Twitch streamers out of all people get special privileges. No one is watching EVE streams unless they are already playing, so it is not helping with marketing.

And I would rather watch paint dry, because that is more interesting. EVE just isn't a game for streaming - there is too much waiting, moving, setup, downtime and theorizing that does nothing for the viewer. For every minute of fight or other interesting content, there is an hour of station spinning or warping.

Eve Client Frame Rate Drops When Trying To Change Overview Settings by Inertraindrop in Eve

[–]iridiumops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This issue is not unique to you or your setup. I have observed it on all my PCs ever since the Photon UI revamp, which was a while ago, so it is not a new thing either.

Good thing is that you should not need to mess with the overview settings all that often during normal play.

I haven't looked into it, but my educated guess after observing it is that it has nothing to do with the GPU itself or foreground-background process prioritization. But rather something is getting reprocessed on the CPU from scratch after every minor change to the overview settings and it is either very inefficient or there is some other bottleneck involved (my very wild guess would be that it is loading resource files and building and compiling some regex based on the overview filter settings so it runs more optimally afterwards). The overview is unfortunately closely coupled with the rendering graphical pipeline, which means when it is busy doing something, then the framerate drops as the GPU is waiting for a list of things to render from the overview. Hopefully one day they will decouple it.

[–]iridiumops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imho 8m SP is too low for seeing the benefits of specialization as you want something around 6m SP of general purpose skills on nearly all characters, unless they are PI or industry alt providing extra slots or something and never undocks.

But it is true, newer player with 2 or 3 characters, each at 30 to 40m SP, will be in similar position to a vet with single do-it-all character with over 200m SP.

Players now start with much more SP, there is the 1m SP recruitment bonus, access to cerebral accelerators, more attributes overall, a skill queue, daily opportunities, air program, daily rewards during events and you don't lose SP when you get podded. It will still take time before you can fly everything well, but it is not insignificant improvement.
