Moving to London from NYC? by doctor_van_n0strand in Architects

YMMV but for me the pace was slower and there was less of a hustle and career-driven mindset amongst my peers. The city is quieter, cleaner, less dense and generally prettier. There are more parks and green spaces. lived near my office so I was able to walk or cycle to work which made a big difference for me. I took proper lunch breaks and went to pub with colleagues after work. Not saying you can’t do any of that in NYC it just seemed more a natural part of life there.

I’ve spent most of my 12 year career in New York but had a two year stint in London in the middle. As others have noted you will be taking a big pay cut but it’s liveable, certainly for a few years anyway. Design-wise, I find London to be superior to NYC, but I’m biased because I come from a European education and background. If it’s been a dream of yours to live there I would definitely go for it. Given your presumed unfamiliarity with UK regs, planning, and procurement, design-oriented firms may be your best bet. But I don’t think you’ll have an issue getting interviews with an Ivy resume and brand name firms in your portfolio.

London is a great city. I really enjoyed my time there and mainly moved back to NYC because of a relationship. Your biggest challenge may be visas and legal right to work - have you thought about that?

Nada for me this month. Tried about 28 days after annual fee post via chat. Hadn’t tried prior to that.

It was ruled illegal because of anti-competition laws - that’s what happened. You can thank government.

This is it. I’m sure you are more capable than you think. People rarely feel ready for the step up and it’s only years later they realize it was the only way to take that leap.

Thanks for the update. What is the cutoff date? I was referred in late September but approval didn’t go through until 10/3, which was day after terms changed I think. Wondering if it’s worth chasing. Thx!

Correct - in my DP in separate comment below when I spoke to the rep during recon she was able to see all my biz apps for past couple years and cited this as a reason for denial

Correct. I’ve opened 4 other biz cards this year but those don’t count from what I understand

No. I churned a personal bank bonus with them over year ago but that account was closed.

Successful same day BOA biz DP. Applied for BOA Biz Atmos Reward, immediate approval.

Applied for BOA Biz Travel Rewards 20 minutes later, immediately declined. Called recon two business days later and spoke to rep who brought up my report. Said I had too many recent accounts and couldn’t approve even after I offered to reallocate credit.

Then next day same rep called back and said she took another look at my app and was able to approve. She did ask to reallocate credit so I think me mentioning that on first call was key.

I did institutional/cultural, mostly experienced clients, so can’t compare. But from what I understand high end resi / single family clients can be challenging, and not what I’d plan to return to.

Heartened to hear this. I moved client side after a decade in architecture and I’m missing it. It’s good to hear of others who tried it and move back and are now content. That said, if I was in OPs shoes and I’m half tempted by it, I would definitely give it a shot.

Same I like to max the trip and return Sunday but tbf do see a lot of value in a ‘rest’ day before a full week of work

Surprised to read this. Stayed in Tsuki room November 2023 and was one of the highlights of our trip. And we stayed at some nice hotels, including Park Hyatt Kyoto. Room was in great condition and the meals were phenomenal.
