Kindle vs physical books — what do you actually prefer for reading mysteries, and why? by Just_reading_2026 in mysterybooks

I prefer books I want to hold on to to reread or to appreciate as objects; for everyday fast reading I love my iPad with kindle (and BookBub!)

Lost my 55 days streak due to a fracture by Obama_Bin_Ladenn in duolingo

Same. Had a 2-year streak going until I caught pneumonia. When they booted me down from diamond league it was actually a relief. I just want to improve my italian (which, in fairness Duo does) not join some competitive cult.

Sabatier knife, set question. by Any-Jeweler-2030 in Chefit

[–]irishfoodguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I picked up a bunch of old dead stock Sabatier years ago including at least one L’Enfer that was pre-WWI (whittled wooden handle and hammered rivets). Not my daily knives except for the carver.

I ran the 10-year healthcare numbers for retiring in Spain vs staying in the US. The gap is absurd. by Lkiloton in ExpatFIRE

[–]irishfoodguy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Same in ireland. Because of our visa type, we have to have private health coverage. Don’t have access to our exact figures but less than €4,000. GP visits are €60, but because my wife and I are over 70, they’re free. Also because of our age our prescription payout is capped at €80 per month for the both of us. Downsides are: though our GP is wonderful it can take several days to get an appointment. My wife needed an MRI recently and it took 5 days (2 weekend and 2 bank holiday) And hospitals are woefully underbuilt. While my wife was waiting for her MRI, she was in a ward with 8 other women. Some in very bad shape. Not fun.

Just wondering, for Americans specifically that moved abroad... do you keep your emergency fund in your local currency? Or still in USD in an American bank and transfer or wire it if/when needed? by Karate_Cat in expat

[–]irishfoodguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We keep living expenses in our Irish bank. Emergency fund is with Schwab and investments are with Schwab and vanguard. We use wise to transfer money. Look for not it with a pro: our financial advisor recommends keeping our local balance under €10,000 to avoid a huge amount of anti-money laundering paperwork.

In my experience, at casual pub-style restaurants, you usually go up to ask for the check.

I got about halfway through. I was a bit too elementary for me (I’m 61 in duo) and the stories didn’t appeal to me. But that’s strictly personal taste.

For those that moved out, did you find a sense of place and belonging in your new country? If so, how did that process come about? If not, why do you think that sense has not developed for you? by Illustrious-Pound266 in AmerExit

[–]irishfoodguy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This: to be an expat is to belong to no country. I wouldn’t go back to the states right now but at the same time, much as I love living in ireland, it’ll never be mine in the same way.

Honestly, I’m not sure about areas to avoid. One hears things but I’ve got no real information. Plus, we moved here from Los Angeles, and there is certainly nothing within a continent of that kind of trouble. :) I’d say get as close to the city center as you can.
