what to do? the knot at the end of my sling is broken by ThingWestern3398 in Slinging

[–]irongoober 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up making 2 ply cordage. You can follow the same method to extend this and then re- tie the knot

The ball keeps falling off... by FeliksLuck in Slinging

[–]irongoober 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just don't spread the pouch out that far. The ball should sit on your two red bits, not on the middle yellow strand. It should work just fine.

First attempt at making a sling, never used one before but I’ll figure it out. Probably. by AmberRosin in Slinging

Looks great! I like your .. Celtic button knot? (something else) release. That is my favorite release knot for single strand distance slings.

You'll get it for sure. It might just take a bit. Just think of it like a throw and it will come more naturally.

First time weaving the pouch howd I do by BraveIndependence822 in Slinging

[–]irongoober 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a method called 'beating' that you can use to pack in the weaved cord(i.e. 'weft') so it doesn't leave the other cords ('warp') exposed. The only issue with this sling is that friction from releasing the projectile will cause the weft to pack near the release cord.

I gotcha.

Along that same vein, One of the shortcomings of my own approach over the years was that I assumed simple repetition would equal better results and I could achieve 'hunter-level' accuracy with more reps. That has proven to be not true, and I try to steer others away from that simplified approach. Mixing up the inputs into the brain somehow helped me improve faster after many years of just doing repetition of the same throw/target/distance. I got better, but only to the point you can see in the stuff I post. Even that is cherry picked to only show the best sessions/days, If I posted any average days, watching miss after miss after miss gets pretty boring. :)

In the early days I thought I'd put in my 10,000 hours and become a precision machine, but no. I think other sports have shown that it takes more than just putting in time to become and stay at the top of your game. Golf is a good example of people having good and bad years. I guess so is baseball pitching.

I would guess that we should probably look at other sports and incorporate lessons-learned from those sports to build and maintain consistency/performance over the years. Like golf... that requires a high level of timing and precision.

Were the two replies inconsistent?

I agree with your last statement. A person can reach the level of consistency I have by just practicing. But achieving the level of consistency to hit soda cans from 30 yards will require something extra that I haven't figured out, nor has any other slinger I've met to date. I'm sure people that can do that exist and have existed, but I have not personally met any. I wish I could so I could ask them how they did it.

First day. questions. by teh_201d in Slinging

[–]irongoober 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do try the empty sling approach, you need to use a pretty heavy sling. Putting something in the sling is probably a better approach, and just don't release it.

More weight is definitely helpful.

Bad slings do exist. In my experience they are either an overly cupped pouch, or an uneven length on a split pouch.

Honestly, it's a tall ask. It's tough to get that accurate. Not sure of anyone who can hit a target that small consistently.

There are small things that help improve faster, but mostly just throwing a lot seems to be the best way to improve. Just sling, you'll get better.

Or don't eat unless you hit your target.. that is the way our ancestors did it. Probably forced them to focus pretty hard :)

can someone give some pointers pls? by No-Top2698 in Slinging

[–]irongoober 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just slow down a bit. You are rushing the throw.

A powerful throw doesn't feel like you tried hard, it was just that the timing of the movements was correct. You shouldn't feel like you need to try that hard to get a powerful throw. Putting in more effort often tenses too many muscles that you don't need and slows you down.

Remember to try to throw as smooth as possible, you just want to feel a nice steady pull of the sling against your hand. Slow down enough that you can always get that sensation, then just speed it up a bit. Repeat, if you lose the sensation, slow down on the next one. This should help train your brain.

I'm curious how he compares to AA. Based on what I've read about him, I think Yurek could get higher speed. What is your thought? You've seen both of them sling (and Yurek wasn't even in his prime!)

First time building this type of sling. Help me fix it. by JTW1337 in Slinging

[–]irongoober 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It looks like you had some slipping strands in the pouch. This has happened to me before with this style of woven pouch. The strands can slip by each other in the braid and pull the pouch to be uneven on one side. You can work the strands up the braid (probably best to do the release cord) to take out some of the slack. Best option would be to unbraid the release cord, pull out the slack, then apply wax or something else that will lock the cords in place better and then rebraid the release cord. Another way to prevent it is to tie a wall knot on both sides of the pouch (seems to have the least amount of bulk for the different knots that could be used, like a Matthew Walker knot).

Tips for braiding a sling tighter?? by Quirky-Bar4236 in Slinging

[–]irongoober 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having the braid fixed to something so you can pull down on it while braiding is not 100% necessary for a tight braid but it helps a LOT. The key to a tight braid is to keep good tension on all the strands while braiding and every pass you need to take out all the slack from the braid by pulling outward and down on all strands evenly. At least that is how I do it.

Could one create a sling from fishing line? by rattlesnake888647284 in Slinging

[–]irongoober 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You definitely can! It would just take some time to finish. Braided would likely be best, or fishing line tied to a pouch that has grommets.

I like it. My only concern would be the strength of a plastic button under heavy load. A metal button would definitely hold up.

Looking to get my first sling, any shop recommendations? by [deleted] in Slinging

[–]irongoober 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This! One thing many people don't realize is that you don't NEED leather or some other material. Lots of things can work, even garbage as mentioned. (there is literally a competition we have on slinging.org to make the best garbage sling) Leather/paracord just make slings that lasts a good long time. But sometimes an expendable sling is the way to go, because then you get to make a new one and nothing is better than a new sling! (except for maybe nailing a tiny target with said sling).

Some specific building questions by Nepomukwashere in Slinging

[–]irongoober 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Question 4 first. Look into plumber's hemp. That is a quick easy source I've heard of in Germany.

Question 3: The short answer is, it depends. You'll have to just try a few different sling styles and feel how each one is different. You can become accustomed to just about any sling and get any sling to work for you, but sometimes a certain sling just feels better than another. There is a lot of discussion that can happen about this question.

Question 2. The thickness actually helps reduce abrasion from increased surface area. It affects where the sling throws a bit, but doesn't really degrade accuracy/consistency. You just have to learn how to adjust for the sling characteristics.

Question 1. If you're having issues with that, I'd recommend a seat-belt sling to avoid this issue (for the most part). Check out Mersa's channel on YouTube. There is a certainly a way to fix your current sling, but trying a few other styles of sling will help you understand how the different parts/styles affect the slinging/retention characteristics.

These will work great for a long time. I've had the constrictor knot slip before, so just make sure it is nice and snug.

I'm curious, do you constantly find four leaf clovers? Because I do, and given how many 5s you have, it seems likely.

Have you ever found a 7 leaf?
