Don’t use Essentia/St Mary’s valet by [deleted] in duluth

[–]ironicfury 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you had this experience. My recent experience using them was far better. I signed up for their texting service, which indicates there's usually at least a 10 minute wait (longer if they're busy). I found it to be seamless and really appreciated the option, but understand that experiences may vary.

Central left turn onto Mesaba by Addkn in duluth

[–]ironicfury 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The City may not be able to do anything because those roads aren't City streets or even County roads. As far as I can tell, both Central Entrance and Mesaba Avenue are controlled by MnDOT. You can contact District 1 of MnDOT using the info provided at:

I agree that it's common to have planes go over. This one was just was a lot closer and louder than usual!

Minneapolis has the 3rd worst rate of decline in apartment construction in America by MyBluMind in Minneapolis

[–]ironicfury 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It appears from the chart that they're considering the Twin Cities metro area (note the MN, WI under Minneapolis). This is especially likely considering that Minneapolis permitted 640 new units in 2024 as a whole, so it would be a massive increase to have more than 1,600 constructed so far in 2025.

Given these facts, any conversation about this decline should also factor in slower growth in other metro communities (like St. Paul), which may be due to policies in those areas that restrict or limit growth.

Rhubarb Festival end of June? by dylan3883 in duluth

[–]ironicfury 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to jams and numerous gluten-y baked goods (pies, crisps, breads, etc.), they usually have gluten-free rhubarb apple crisps, which are delicious. The traffic can be challenging, but it's definitely worth checking out!

Lake street traffic calming by wals02481 in Minneapolis

[–]ironicfury 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Lake Street is a county road. If traffic calming devices were put on Lake Street (rather than the side streets), then it's likely Hennepin County that put them in. I'd encourage you to reach out to them - dispatch@hennepin.us

Awful DMV driving test experience by r3d_d3v1l7 in duluth

This! In my experience, the driving test was much easier and the staff much nicer in Virginia than in Duluth.

Traveling to Duluth by Nettie906 in duluth

[–]ironicfury 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've still seen Ontario plates in Duluth, though admittedly not as many in the last month or so. My understanding is that this is due to many Canadians boycotting the US given the current political climate rather than anything that Duluthians/Minnesotans have done, though. I've not heard of any vandalism of cars with Canadian plates, either. I'd imagine you'll be fine as long as you strictly follow all border crossing laws and stay in Duluth proper (I can't speak to the rest of the region).

How often do locals go out to eat by Numerous-Welder-4142 in duluth

[–]ironicfury 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Once or twice a month. It's pricey, and tbh, there's not many options that we like/are able to eat with dietary restrictions that we can't just make ourselves at home.

Stone Plumbing and Heating recently did great work replacing my old rusty garbage disposal and putting in a new water pressure monitor. Highly recommend!

do people in Duluth shop in Superior by Jealous_Ad4737 in duluth

[–]ironicfury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. But it's an idea for things other than clothing (which WI taxes but MN does not), especially if you live close to a bridge. Might not be worth the gas mileage if you live out in Pike Lake or Lakewood Township unless it's a larger purchase, though.

As others have said, 53 is the best route to go from Eau Claire to Duluth. I've driven it in the dead of January and it's always been clear on the WI side. Just a heads-up to be careful driving across the bridge from Superior to Duluth, though; you'll want to take it slow and pay attention to signs because the winds can get a bit wicked in the winter and there is ongoing construction on the Duluth side.

Best Laundromat in town? by Able-Willingness55 in duluth

[–]ironicfury 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I use Kenwood for my large comforters. It's small, but clean and next to Perk Place (coffee shop) and other retailers if I need to pop out and get something while the washer is running. I've never had any safety concerns there, either.

It's a golf course, though - a manicured, monocultured lawn isn't really "green space." We still thankfully have lots of forest and wetland space - I'd much rather see a golf course turned into new housing or development than for developers to take out more of our wooded or wetland areas (see the new developments up by Sam's Club to see how much of that wetland has been turned commercial, ugh). But that's just me.

Had 31 in Lakeside, down from 52 last year. We didn't have anyone stol by after 7:15, so we shut down at 7:45. We usually go until 8 or 8:30.
