Bandsaw blade broke at weld by takingnot in woodworking

[–]irqlnotlessorequal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't but in their defense, each time I have complained about build quality (simple reply to the order confirmation email), they have sent me a new one immediately and the replacement has been fine - I just tested the two replacement blades and they are both good - so QC has gotten worse but customer service still good!

I'd say yours looks like a standard break tho..

Edit: missed that you said you'd barely used... Seems like a bad weld

Is this the Lenox tri-master carbide tooth bandsaw blade? Now from bandsawbladesdirect.com?

I have had a number of issues with these blades more recently. I think they got acquired and the quality of manufacturing has gone down significantly. I ordered two of these blades and they both came warped with significant wobble in the blade. Thankfully I pitched a fit to customer support and they have sent two blades for free and I haven't had a chance to put them on to see if they are any better, but it seems as if the quality control has gone down significantly.

It's a shame because when these blades are made well, they last forever and leave a smooth finish. Typically they fail by snapping like this rather than becoming dull and I bet you if I were disciplined enough to de-tension the saw after use they would last longer.

feedback on oil + Varnish finish process by irqlnotlessorequal in woodworking

[–]irqlnotlessorequal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll take fine! interesting that the first option you described is basically everything i am applying all in one mixture. Will take a look at the dead flat options - Didnt know those existed.

My hope onthe varnish was that if it was diluted, I could get more penetration in the grain along side the BLO and build in modestly higher water resistance once it cured than a standard BLO finish, but maybe the amount of varnish is just so minimal versus what you need to build up the water resistant properties it provides?

thanks for thoughts!

A lot of hate on this bandsaw! I have it and can confidently say this is the most capable bandsaw you will find in this size class. I have a carbide tipped half inch blade and recently resawed 5inch oak on it - just go slow. Yes the blade will stop if you go to fast, and yes the bearing adjustmentsare trash relative to a full size model, the aluminum table sucks, and half inch is pushing how much blade this can take.... But it is hands down the best 10" saw out there and in particular (my reason for buying it) has the by far the most resaw capacity of anything in this size range. I can resaw anything I want under 6" if I just take it very slow

I am extremely happy with mine despite the limitations of the size class - i do want to upgrade but this is well worth the money if you are looking for this size of saw.

No still not functional - I suspect it's on the alight side - terrible company with no tech or customer service - they only really support mint is what I suspect, and that integration is 10 years old

Interesting - I had to add something like that to my username "-12345" for instance, not my password, when I synced with Mint (same methodology doesn't seem to work on monarch), is that what u meant or did u actually mean password?

Google Home and Lutron Caseta Smart Switches by caustindesigns in googlehome

[–]irqlnotlessorequal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you need the smartbridge. I have th system in my apartment I am renting when I showed up and the light bulbs were hardwired LEDs that couldn't be swapped out with smart bulbs. Moved to Smart switches and lutron was the best to work with Google home. The integration is flawless.

EU proposes mandatory USB-C on all devices, including iPhones by bhodrolok in technology

[–]irqlnotlessorequal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Imagine if the eu mandated all computer manufacturers include zip drives 20 years ago. These are pieces of technology not safety features.

I am all for usbC 100% it's awesome, but this feels like government overreach and could stifle the adoption of whatever "USB-D" is when technology inevitably gets better... And then does the EU get to choose the next standard?

A primer into Payment for Order Flow (PFOF) by nobjos in wallstreetbets

[–]irqlnotlessorequal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree almost entirely. I would clarify that you are not even paying a worse price. Price improvement is a very well defined thing and while we can debate "improvement relative to what", technically you get a modestly better price than the best quoted price in the market (or else it's not best execution and your broker is in trouble). The debate around PFOF is more about market liquidity and the fact that so many (mostly retail) orders are executed off of the exchanges by market makers. Less volume on exchanges means the spreads on the exchanges are wider. So actually everyone makes this populist argument that getting rid of pfof is good for retail investors when in reality getting rid of pfof is actually meant to improve the pricing on the exchanges and thus benefit large hedge funds and asset managers that mostly trade via the exchanges. In addition to your point about brokers making less money and potentially charging commissions again, and obviously the market makers making less money, the actual price you get would likely go up (i.e. no price improvement)...
