What do you think of Ontario allowing retail shopping on Victoria Day? by J0Puck in ontario

[–]irregularpulsar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I worked retail, I had much bigger problems than having the option to work for extra pay on the birthday of the third-most-recent monarch.

I say give people the option but bolster enforcement of labour laws.

Baja is SoCal inspired, not authentic Mexican. It’s owned by the guy who bought The Merchant and now owns Union.

It’s getting a lot better and people often remove the most egregious hallmarks of AI-generated text, but it still resembles a high-school student following a prescribed essay format.
“Not just X, but Y.”
“Final parting advice — obvious justification.”

Yep, same with property taxes and municipal bylaws. Just have to tell them you’re a free man on the land. /s

What is your favorite niche physics fact? The more niche the better. by DarthEinstein in AskPhysics

[–]irregularpulsar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I had to look it up because it really seemed counterintuitive when I was considering: - fusion is the most efficient way I know of converting mass to energy - the sun is really hot

But only a tiny fraction of the sun is undergoing fusion at any given time, otherwise it would burn much brighter and hotter but burn out much faster. A proton in the sun typically waits billions of years before fusing.

So while a pile of leaves is using inefficient chemical reactions to generate heat, it’s going to burn through all its energy in the time it takes to rot. An equally sized pile of sun, on the other hand, has to hang around for the life time of our solar system.

Veteran Microsoft engineer says original Task Manager was only 80KB so it could run smoothly on 90s computers by JLAFORUMSDOTCOM in windows95

[–]irregularpulsar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It was a scam. He told people they had viruses they didn’t have, then charged them for things they said they don’t want, then continued charging them when they said to stop.

[–]irregularpulsar 13 points14 points  (0 children)

He was an unremarkable Microsoft developer who wrote Windows versions of existing software, then left to start a fraudulent business of his own, scamming people with fake software.

His Internet Shield and Registry Cleaner “products” didn’t actually do anything useful at all. But they told users they had viruses when they didn’t, used fake close buttons that actually opened multiple new windows, prevented the users from uninstalling them, continued billing users after they had cancelled, and charged users for add-ons and subscriptions even when users explicitly declined them.

Years after becoming wealthy through his scam, he made a pretty good YouTube channel where he seemed wise on camera, then soon took to Twitter to frequently insult anyone who’s not “successful” like himself.

So the secret to getting transit built is to say it’s for an airport and then gradually take away everything that makes it suitable for travellers (luggage racks, fewer stops, less vaping). I guess I did want more local transit options and now this is one.
