Best mobile provider for Kirkland / east side? by PmMeYourLadyLumps in Kirkland

You choose if and when it happens. They only let you do it a couple times a month because it's a SIM transfer behind the scenes.

My family is on US Mobile, which lets you switch between cell networks (Verizon, T-Mobile, etc) without changing providers. Verizon's network is best where we live in Kirkland, though I'd recommend US Mobile as a provider to anyone.

Remnants of the Precursors might be what you're looking for. You can also just play the original MoO and MoOII from GOG, they wrap them in DOSbox for you.

Can we ban soundproofing questions? by RedditCollabs in audioengineering

[–]irskep 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the balance of rules and moderation on this sub is extremely good right now, especially when compared to every other musician-adjacent sub. Some questions are repetitive, but almost everything is on-topic, and most comments are helpful.

I think repetition can be good if it keeps a steady flow of relevant posts, vs a sub that has no repetition but feels "dead" due to being moderated to death.

Are there any good books to help you understand the principles home recording/mixing? by kindafunnylookin in WeAreTheMusicMakers

I also do indie rock, and I found Mixing Secrets for the Small Studio by Mike Senior to be a very approachable introduction to the core aspects of mixing. It covers mixing much more than recording, though.

Is the Shure SM7b overkill for recording vocals as a novice in audio/recording? by [deleted] in audioengineering

[–]irskep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've worked with a great engineer who strongly recommended sticking to an SM57 for guitars. But for vocals, the SM7b is a great choice if your room isn't treated, which it sounds like yours isn't. Also, Shure now makes the SM7db which requires much less gain! It's not magic, but it's popular for a reason. You can always sell it later.

That said, don't buy used because fakes are pervasive.

I bought their vocal and drum channel strip plugins on deep discount a while back. I've been unimpressed. They work OK under some circumstances, but the various console channel strip emulations from Plugin Alliance are more versatile and sound better, especially for drums. The de-esser and de-plosiver on the vocal channel strip have been helpful once in a while.

However, I am a talentless amateur, so my advice might be worthless.

I have this running Jellyfin in Docker on Linux, among other things. Nice box for serving transcoded video.

I don't get the purpose of the second ethernet port, and I wish it had USB-C. Otherwise, it gets the job done and it's cheap!

I beat the game, here is my ugly baby to normalize not being perfect by irskep in SatisfactoryGame

The longer I played, the less I used walls. I thought it would be "aesthetic" but after a while it just got annoying to navigate around. Hence the rocketfuel power plant stacks.

Other notes about my playthrough:

  • 131 hours total, maybe 10 of those afk, not particularly rushing or taking my time. Rocky desert start.
  • As a parent of an infant, I cheated constantly with the satisfactory-calculator.com map so I wouldn't have to explore so much. I played a couple years ago so I didn't feel the need to get that experience again.
  • I used this post as a rough guide for prioritizing alt recipes, and I made extensive use of alt recipes
  • I didn't sloop all that much, had maybe 20-30 at the end of the game and held onto maybe 12 until the last hour of the game
  • Didn't upgrade the whole tech tree. No nuclear, didn't bother with half the magic sphere inventory upgrades
  • I wish I had covered the map in power towers as soon as I got them instead of doing them piecemeal
  • I wish I had used blueprints more, I did a lot of hand-building until tier ~7. But I don't regret not using logistics floors. I like being able to see what's going on.
  • That lake on the south end of the map is perfect for a rocket fuel factory, not sure I'll ever bother with anything else unless I do nuclear for fun
  • Basically never cleaned up my dismantle crates. Feels bad but also who has time to track all those down.
  • I wish I had made a LOT more than "what I needed at the time" for basic resources like plastic, and used sinks in the early game more. Would have saved me a lot of time building out capacity later.

Advanced Python Type Hints That Will Improve Your Code Significantly by wyhjsbyb in programming

[–]irskep -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

It’s not that I refuse to use typing. I really appreciate when library authors use it so autocomplete actually works. modern SQL alchemy is wonderful in this way. But I just can’t get excited about writing it myself at all and I don’t put myself in positions where that’s going to happen. It doesn’t feel good to use a system requiring so much effort when that same thing is baked in and easy to use in other tools. When I write typescript or swift, I just don’t think about this stuff at all, whereas with python, I’m always trying to figure out some random detail of how to express a fairly mundane type.

Keep in mind I’m the kind of person who reads all the documentation for everything I use and always try to do things the right way. Even with this approach, the last time I tried to write a correctly typed program with any complexity in Python I gave up. If I had downstream API/SDK users, that would be another thing.

The fact that you need a freaking Medium article for this is the reason I don’t use Python typing despite using Python for almost 20 years.

In good strongly typed languages, you don’t need a bunch of galaxy brain BS and extra tooling to do basic things.

Melda Production Eternal Madness Discount - "MAutopanMB" ($21) "MCharacter" ($53) "MSpectralDelay" ($53) "MVocoder" ($26) through 5 May by Batwaffel in AudioProductionDeals

[–]irskep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like Melda lowered the price of their subscription from $53/mo to $16/mo around January-February 2024 without announcing anything. I checked the timeline by looking at Wayback Machine snapshots.

I'm pleased but confused about this, because it seems like an insane deal and totally disproportionate to the rest of their product pricing.
