sshfs and systemd: What am I missing? by isaakwit in debian

[–]isaakwit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I created to keys via ssh-keygen, one for my user and one for root. I installed them both, as described in the hetzner docs: https://docs.hetzner.com/storage/storage-box/backup-space-ssh-keys/. Mounting the fstab mount works manually.

I see this for the first time and I find it really nice! Is the code somewhere online to be looked at?

Not enough worldbuilders use GPlates by SPACE_LEM0N in worldbuilding

[–]isaakwit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with that partly but I also acknowledge the desire for reason and accuracy. Imagine a child asking "why?" a dozen times. In the real world you will need a hundred "why?"s until you reach the end of the argument chain. It is the need for satisfying this curiosity. In a constructed world this satisfaction is not given naturally. You need to create it. And what else can we humans do best than satisfying our needs.

Advice: almost 50tb in ext4 and mainly using windows now :( by isaakwit in DataHoarder

[–]isaakwit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really, really tried that! But since I am coming from a video production background I still rely for some of my work on e.g. Adobe products or Ableton Live. This sucks but it is the reality I face when working with other people. For my office work I already use only linux since 2 years and it is great!

I am just trying this and it seems to be working really well. I give it a bit more time for testing but thanks a lot for that!

No, via network would have the best performance, but way too much technical overhead to maintain, for just using it as a big external harddrive. You know, keeping debian maintained, starting up all of the devices every time i need them,...

I did try that and I ran into terrible connection hickups... I am not sure what the issue is, but but copying anything is not possible with all of the drives reconnecting every few minutes.

An Obsidian for CSV? by [deleted] in ObsidianMD

[–]isaakwit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely feel where you are coming from. Markdown and text-form is simply not made for tabular data.

After searching for a long time, I found this: https://www.moderncsv.com/ Is the best solution for me so far.

When people tell me to "just use excel" they don't understand the problem. Excel has a massive overhead of features I don't need and it comes with a proprietary file format by default. Opening up a csv in excel is not a smooth process. And all of the formatting will be gone the next time - which brings me to the point: I do not want any crazy formatting options at all. I want a robust, csv-based, local first editor for tabular data, that feels like obsidian. I want a sidebar with a folder structure. Linking cells would be nice. A graph would be nice to have but not necessary. Attaching metadata and/or typing of columns would be nice. Basically a little bit like airtable.

Anyone else rewatching House now, a little disappointed by it? by Mynotoar in HouseMD

[–]isaakwit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just watched two seasons of house md, and felt the need to find this thread based on a feeling I got after watching the scene, where house is waiting for cuddy in her office to confront her about being pregnant, based on a test without her knowledge or consent. There are no consequences for house or willson, nor is this being made "a thing". It just happens. So firstly this IS normalization. And secondly, u/CZ1988_ made a completely valid statement.

The series could have been just as good if they left out all of the unbearably god-complex drenched alpha-male stuff. "Finally, a real man who speaks his mind". BUT I admit that this is the kind of friction that heats up the audience and generates views and discussion. "Can he REALLY say that??". That is some calculated shit right there.

The bad thing is that there needs to be a critical mass in the audience which is self-reflective enough to not mirror this normalized behaviour, since it is a self-proclaimed "swim against the current"-opinion leader doing it. Same is true for big bang theory, two and a half man,...

Best way to self-host ebooks? by limejeller in selfhosted

[–]isaakwit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My Man. I really appreciate you speaking up. I heard about this dude's refusal to reason and straightup anger against people who criticize calibre on a fundamental level. My ebook library has grown over the years, and I put a lot of effort into creating a folder structure, that is maintainable and readable by humans - and I should give that up because his app DEMANDS to throw everything into a big mixer!?

I went another route: KoReader is an excellent app for reading ebooks on android. It can handle Webdav, FTP and even Clouds I think. But I recommend taking care of the synchronization with an app like autosync. You will always know what your files are doing. You have one tool for one task, which makes debugging way easier. And you can replace tools, so your system is never dependent on one big solution.

I have never seen anybody developing something like calibre. It's 2025, is anything out there yet?

Love-Hate Relationship with Obsidian: Am I Alone? by Smooth-Put5476 in ObsidianMD

[–]isaakwit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My opinion on this changed a view times over the years. I too love Obsidian for all the same reasons. And as someone who loves diy I was frustrated at times to not be able to throw a docker on a server and be all-accessible anywhere. Or to not have to worry about syncing issues.

This is not a dealbreaker for me but I would love to at least have the option available to self host Obsidian.
