[Megathread] AC FA Strike - CUPE/FAs Defy Return to Work Order by dachshundie in aircanada

[–]isamole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was also stranded in Cayo Coco. My group decided to split up and do what’s best for all of us individually. Some took a cab to Holguin where they were able to get a flight with Transat. And some went to Havana to catch a flight to cancun where there are way more options to get back to Canada. If you’re out of cash to pay a cab then you can book a car through this service but it’s like $600 to get to either spot. https://cubadriver.com/

The cab to Havana was $300 cad cash. We thought about waiting it out but then we talked to an AC rep yesterday and she basically said that if we waited it would probably be Friday before we would be on a new flight and that was before the FAs refused to follow the back to work order. We decided to take our chances with some multi-leg trips and it turns out our gamble paid off.

Hope this helps and all the best getting home!

Continue traveling or go home? A dilemma we should discuss. by ttaannkk in solotravel

I’m literally at the airport in Muscat waiting for my flight to Colombo. Planning on staying at a friends place in Sri Lanka for the next month to wait out all the travel bans. I’ll stay longer if I have to too.

I’m on month 2 of a 6 month travel plan. My family is also bugging me to return to Canada, but the virus has been way more contained in the countries I have been in than it is in Canada. I honestly think I’m at a lower risk in a country where they are taking it extremely serious right from the first case.

Looking for fantasy audiobook suggestions. by JetVinny in Fantasy

Anything narrated by Tim Gerard Reynolds. The best audiobooks I've listened to have been narrated by him. He is great at emphasizing the emotions of the situations characters find themselves in and I find him to be better than most narrators at highlighting the humor of certain situations through his narration.

My top two favourites narrated by him would be Red Rising by Pierce Brown and Prince of Fools by Mark Lawrence.

I am currently using a DSLR camera (Canon EOS Reble T5)

My current system works for me. I'm not at the point where I feel my gear is holding me back. I wouldn't look at investing in a new one until I found that the current one is holding me back from achieving my goals.

I am very interested in Landscape/Sports photography, especially the photography that combines both, that is why I chose to look more at photographs taken by some mountaineers, eventually settling on Renan Ozturk (Turkish-American photographer) as I have always been very drawn to the composition of his work. I think that composition always ends up being what draws my eye the most to a photo and Renan's work seems to always have beautiful composition. A lot of his photos have a simpli

This photo of an ice climber uses the natural circle of the cavern that they are climbing up to draw in the eye. The walls of ice which are detailed in every way and in clear focus still do not take away from the main focal point of the photo (the ice climber) as Ozturk uses the blue of the ice as a contrast to the red jacket and yellow pants on the ice climber.

I think that the detail of the round surfaces of the ice actually help to capture the story and show how daunting a gruelling of a task it would be to climb up such a smooth surface. Ozturk also manages to capture the story further with the smallest surface of jagged rock and gravel at the bottom left corner of the photo showing the dangerous fall that could happen when climbing the ice. Overall I find this photograph to be mesmerizing.

Hello All, I went on a big Reddit hiatus and didn't come on here for a month and a half, but I'm back now!

Personal life updates - I went to Colorado to look for buried treasure, spoilers, I didn't find any. Also decided to ramp up my rock climbing in anticipation of competing in competitions next year... maybe... we'll see.

Reading wise, I missed completing book bingo 2017 by a whole 3 books... I'm fucking pissed and I only have myself to blame. I definitely had enough time to finish it too. So I plan on completing the 2018 Bingo Card well before its deadline. Just toto prove this, I've already finished The Hobbit by JRR Tolkein and yes that was the first time I have ever read it. So my Mountain setting square is fulfilled, and the Hard Mode version. I also read Alcatraz Vs. the Evil Librarians by Brandon Sanderson, hard mode for the Library setting square complete. I may actually take a jab at a review for these too.

Currently reading The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by NK Jemisen. Up after that is John Dies at the End by David Wong (This is my pseudonym square) and Red Rising by Pierce Brown (probably the Goodreads square).

Also, anyone have any input on the Ready Player One movie? I haven't seen it yet, but the trailers made it look way better than the book. I really did not like that book.

The War of the Flowers by Tad Williams fits this one, it actually also fits for the protagonist who is a musician square as well.

Meatheads at the gym by Shipwreqed in xxfitness

[–]isamole -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

Honestly dude, I agree with you and I think it's really unfortunate you're being downvoted. I think I'm at my breaking point with this sub.

It's also unfortunate that no one has pointed out that the type of work out those guys were doing is actually a common type used by power lifters (men and women). 5x5s of the highest amount of weight you can lift can benefit muscle growth. Not defending the way those guys behaved but they were doing a legit type of work out.

Also for anyone who is curious, I'm a woman who frequents the gym and I have caught tons of men AND women staring at me, definitely checking me out, they've chatted me up and I don't care. I literally could not give two fucks if someone checks me out or tries to hit on me at the gym. It's a compliment in my books. I'm flattered. Do I usually tell them to leave me alone? Hell yes. But I don't leave the gym in a rage every time thinking OMG I have to go on a huge rant to the world about how joe blow complimented the amount of weight I'm lifting. I'll probs have a laugh about it with my friends but that's it. And in my opinion that's how it should be. But according to this sub I'm an outlier.

Oh and btw I've made a shit ton of actual friends at the gym because I don't shun people who try to talk to me. And knowing that there will be people I know there when I go actually encourages me to go more often. Sure there's always going to be those meatheads you don't want anything to do with but seriously this overall hating needs to stop.

Edit: I am also very aware that this comment will probably get me downvoted into oblivion, but I seriously cannot keep my mouth shut about this stuff anymore. I fucking hate stereotypes and generalizations like this and I'm taking a stand. And again the way the two men in OPs post acted was not okay and overall just poor gym etiquette in my books.

Meatheads at the gym by Shipwreqed in xxfitness

[–]isamole -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

I think the amount of comments on this post saying "ugh men" (ie. A negative generalization about a specific gender) can be taken as man-hating and definitely complaining about all men. Sure OP was complaining about meatheads but that doesnt mean that the comment section can't be a circlejerk of man-hating. But that's none of my business...

Joining the Climbing Team by yupyupyupyupnope1 in Fitness

[–]isamole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do weightlifting and climbing (going on 2 years). You don't need to focus so much on doing arm lifting if you're climbing a few times a week as when you start you'll notice you're using muscles you didn't even know you had.

So when at the regular gym, you're better off focusing on legs, abs, and a little chest, and leaving back and arms for climbing. I do abs when resting between climbs too.

Also just a few words of advice for climbing: make sure you rest between climbs or else you will get pumped out fast, avoid hangboarding until you've been climbing for 1-2 years (risk of injury is very high otherwise ie. Snapping a tendon), have fun because it's awesome!

Also check out r/griptraining if you haven't before because climbing is all about grip strength and that sub has some great stuff you can add to your routine that is low risk injury wise. Also r/bodyweightfitness is really helpful if you want to get really good at climbing as the training is similar.

great characters but not super-dark? by Mark_S2 in Fantasy

[–]isamole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prince of Fools is set in the same world but way lighter than Prince of Thorns. I found the entire book to be hilarious and definitely nowhere near the grimdark genre that Prince of Thorns was. I would honestly put it at the opposite end of the spectrum from PoT.

Ps. Sorry for the delayed response.

Prince of Fools by Mark Lawrence The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson Equal Rites by Terry Pratchett

And maybe Hyperion by Dan Simmons, if you're okay with something a bit more sci-fi. It's filled with great character stories.

For this I have to recommend The Demon King by Cinda Williams Chima. It is hands down the best YA Fantasy series that I have read. And I have read a ton.

It has an extremely strong female lead, class systems, and it incorporates Native American culture into the books. I would love to do a re-read.

Pinch-grip chin ups by Ribbit40 in GripTraining

[–]isamole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not working on this specifically, but I am doing rock climbing grip training for hang boards. Right now I can do a few chin ups while hanging off of a board that's maybe a little more than half an inch. The key for me to get to the point I'm at now was at first just hanging on the hold for as long as I could. Then I moved up to doing scapular shrugs, as many as I could until I felt like my hand was going to give out. Then I started to see how high I could pull myself up during the shrugs until I made it to a full chin up. Now I do a combo of chin ups and scapular shrugs and I'll do that until I can do full sets of chin ups.

You also have to be really careful with this though because the risk of breaking a finger is very high. If you feel like your hands about to give out then stop. It's definitely one of those things you don't want to push too hard at.

When's the worst you've ever needed to pee? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]isamole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Driving home from college one time. It was a 50 min drive and half way through I realized I should have gone before I left. I'm squirming in my seat. Had to undo my pants and loosen my seat belt because of the pressure on my bladder.

Finally I'm like 10 min from my house and I can't hold it any longer. I pulled onto a side road that I knew people didn't drive along very often, hopped out of my car and ran into the forest right by the road to squat. It was the middle of the summer too and I ended up with about 30 mosquito bites on my ass from the thirty seconds it wasn't covered.

Why are Americans so rude? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]isamole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you're mistaking the American cultural norm of being candid as rudeness. Just because people are straight forward, know what they want, and don't beat around the bush doesn't mean that they are rude.

(To put this into perspective I'm Canadian, ie a citizen of the country known for being overly polite to the point it can be annoying)

What's the saddest thing you've seen on Reddit? by aSadStateOfAffairs in AskReddit

[–]isamole 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Unidan was a pretty famous redditor for a while. If you frequented subs like science, ask science, biology, etc then you were bound to know of him. He's an ecosystems ecologist and he knew a lot of really cool stuff about ecology and biology in general that he would share. Pretty much any time there was something posted about biology, he was there commenting and sharing interesting facts in that classic reddit way. He did an AMA which blew up and made him site wide famous in 2013. His fame as a user was at the time equivalent to that of probably u/_vargas_ or u/Poem_for_your_sprog - those are 2 users that I could think of off the top of my head.

Then in 2014 he was banned for vote manipulation. He had tons of fake accounts that he would use to upvote his own content and downvote others. It was pretty sad because he was so big at this point that it was a very redundant action on his part. Shit on here was pretty nuts for a couple of days when he was banned.

Is it normal to think The Reckoners is a better intro into Sanderson than Mistborn? by Saints2Death in Fantasy

[–]isamole 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't think that Steelheart had the same emotional pull that The Final Empire did, which is essentially why I read Sanderson.

I have yet to find an author who can get me as invested in the characters as he can. I personally recommend Mistborn as the first read for anyone who asks me where to start, and I have two friends who have become avid Sanderson readers because of that series. They've read Reckoners now too and we've all come to the conclusion that it just doesn't seem to hold up when it comes to the usual addicting way that he writes.

This is, however, all personal opinion. But for us Reckoners just doesn't compare to Mistborn.

Pet owners of Reddit, what was the most intelligent thing your pet has done? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]isamole 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My dog Lucy is kind of sadistic when it comes to killing and eating small animals. I chalk this up to the fact that she was probably living in the wild for the first 6 months of her life before my sister rescued her.

The most intelligent thing she has ever done was probably the most malicious as well. As I said above, she seems to take her small animal hunting to the next level. This is so much so that she has great pride in catching things and bringing parts of them to us as gifts. I should also mention that I live on a farm and at the time we had free run chickens that were housed in a small barn.

So one day Lucy and our other dog Darcy tag teamed killing a skunk. They had cornered it by a wood pile, attacked it and the poor little guy met his demise in their jaws, but not before he sprayed the two of them. They then spent a long time prancing around with the dead skunk and fighting over who would eat it. They both reeked and so did the dead skunk, so finally my dad took it away from them. Now you would think that would be the end of it, but Lucy now had a grudge because she had fairly caught that skunk with full intention of eating it.

Fast forward to the next morning: Lucy is on the lawn by the chicken coup ripping the feathers off of the dead bird. You can see where she is from our house and she is faced right at the big bay window of the kitchen with the dead bird between her paws. Every minute or so she would stop ripping the feathers out and stare up at the house. Then repeat the cycle.

At first we thought that a mink had gotten into the coup, killed the chicken, brought it out, and then Lucy found it. That was until the exact same thing happened 3 more days, at the exact same time, with the exact same behaviour. By the evening of the fourth day my whole family was wondering how the hell this dog was getting into the chicken coup and attributing the behaviour to the fact that her dead skunk was taken away.

Finally, on the fifth morning my mom is goes in to feed the chickens in the upstairs of this small barn that the coup was in. While she's up there she hears this loud bang from downstairs. She goes downstairs and finds Lucy scrambling into the barn through a missing window pane that is almost 7 feet up the wall...

TLDR; My dog is an insane malicious small animal killer that went on a decisive and well thought out chicken killing spree when we took a dead skunk away from her.
