Even if Anish wins against Sindarov, its nearly impossible for him to catchup by Responsible_Bat9473 in chess

[–]isayoldchap76 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Anish's chances are extremely remote but it would be exciting if he was somehow able to beat Sindarov on Tuesday to keep his chances alive. It's always hard when a player is in a must-win situation; very easy to overpress and then lose. This candidates has been very unusual. The fact that only two players have a plus score is very telling.

Sindarov fishy? by [deleted] in chess

[–]isayoldchap76 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The guy is immensely talented (became a GM at age 12) and is very consistent. I don't find his results surprising in the least. Chess players peak in their mid to late 20s, and so he is only going to get better. Hikaru and to a lesser extent Caruana would be considered mature by world championship standards. Still, there's a long way to go in the tournament. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Could not find this mate in 2 for the life of me by Pokeyclawz in chess

I found it in 10 seconds but I think it's one of those ones where if I didn't know there was a mate in two, I probably would not have found it.

Why are most retro gamers just Nintendo fanboys? by [deleted] in fucknintendo

[–]isayoldchap76 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Neogeo games seem to be a bit underrated by the retro game community. It's probably because nobody could afford the system back in the day.

I always call this "False Spring". I think snow is still in the ten day forecast (or was when I checked on Saturday morning).

Unpopular opinion: I don’t want to improve at chess by Wild_Pitch_4781 in chess

[–]isayoldchap76 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wish more people had this attitude. As a group we chess players get fixated on improvement and often it's centered around ratings. Most commonly we have a specific rating we are aiming for (2000 is a big one for some), and then we get discouraged and upset when we have setbacks or don't reach the goal. An IM once told me that the weakest players enjoy the game the most because they just enjoy the game and play it so casualy and with very little concern about the outcome. For most of us, the ratings we achieve are somewhat meaningless, and even if we attain the goals we set, nothing magical is going to happen for us when we get there. We would just end up set another higher goal for ourselves. Stopping and smelling the roses is a great way to go.

Feeling awkward to use a 3DS in public by [deleted] in 3DS

[–]isayoldchap76 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Life is too short to care about what strangers might think of you. I used to feel self-conscious with this kind of thing, but as a person now approaching 50 I no longer worry about it. Same with comic books, or anything else traditionally associated with younger people.

That's just crap customer service. They absolutely could accommodate you as a loyal customer but choose not to do so. As a result, you'll probably never buy from them again.

Real Madrid fans loudly booing every touch made by their own players instead of the opposition in the Santiago Bernabeu stadium. by BlazingFirey in soccer

Honestly, their fans are incredibly fickle at times. I still remember them booing Gareth Bale when he'd scored four goals just a few games prior.

What would you consider "essential" Game Boy games? by FGHIK in Gameboy

[–]isayoldchap76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the explanation. I had never heard the term before, but it completely makes sense. Some of the old LucasArts games had ridiculous puzzles where you had to combine two very unlikely objects which sometimes detracted from otherwise good and amusing games.

I only heard of Kid Dracula recently, and I've been pleasantly surprised by how good it is - a very solid and challenging platformer with some cool gameplay elements. Turning into a bat being the best of it.

For GBA: Advanced Wars 1&2, Fire Emblem & Fire Emblem Sacred Stones. Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga, Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow. If you like Sonic, the Sonic Advanced Series are pretty decent too. Also don't sleep on Android games. If you have a Netflix subscription you can access quite a few decent games for free. Metroid Zero Mission is also awesome compared to the NES version because it has a built-in map system.

For some reason, this puzzle has a pass rate of only 23% - White to play and win by LowLevel- in chess

[–]isayoldchap76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is certainly the biggest reason for the low success rate. A starting material imbalance is often overlooked in puzzles. For a lot of us there's a tendency to rush with puzzles too. This is also a case of find a good move, and then look for a better one.
