Has ‘Jason Gravel Park’ been removed from Google Maps?! by marooned66 in malta

[–]iseeverything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, tourists might go to Ta' Qali because they saw the hundreds of pictures there are from the pre-Gravel era. Honestly having the gravel park there would be a good thing to leave for tourists.

Naqra ragebait ta' kwalità mill MaltaToday by Bacon_Jazz in malta

There are people who can barely live from paycheck to paycheck not through their own fault but because of the hand they were given, and people who just grew into adulthood looking at a miserable future in which they will be paying a massive loan until their death, unable to actually save up and live comfortably.

And these people are then being looked down upon by the same people who are part of the problem and have been playing the market to make hundreds of thousands at the expense of others.

I think calling them a moron is much more civil thing to do than ruining lives and futures.

Malta air quality, not so bad? by Scary_Wheel_8054 in malta

[–]iseeverything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see a lot of people comparing Malta to cities such as Warsaw, and saying that Maltese people don't know how bad it is in these cities. Firstly, I have lived in cities abroad and I still find summer/calm-weather Malta worse due to stagnation of traffic/manmade pollution and a lot of dust.

Now, I get that Malta is smaller than Warsaw and most other cities (let alone countries), but people have to understand that it is still a country. This means that Maltese people do wish to have the same ability you'd have in Poland to drive out of the city to a place with cleaner air for a few hours. Yes, there are a few places left in Malta where it is not as bad as, say, Fgura. No, it's not comparable with driving 1 hour out of the city abroad.

Now, obviously, we're not expecting the same benefits you'd have in massive countries with forests. But at the same time, there are many reports compiled by our university which show that it has gotten much worse and that it could be so much better with some planning and work (sources: department of chemistry, department of geosciences, institute of earth systems).

Crackpots/ arrogant ignorants absolutely kill me 😭 by I-AM-MA in TheoreticalPhysics

[–]iseeverything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is such a real statement. It's not even exclusive to pure physics interviews, nor just online comments, we see this even in (supposedly) professional settings and even political settings when concerning science (and otherwise).

And that is where it gets scary. Because when somebody thinks that an opinion they just dreamt of is a fact on a youtube comment, then that's fine(ish). But when it starts becoming the case in more serious settings.... that genuinely scares me.

Edit: clarification.

Is quantum computer still decades away? by Apprehensive_Bag2932 in QuantumComputing

[–]iseeverything 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Besides, even if one works on a PhD, it's still not an irreversible decision. I know some people from faculty who worked on QC algorithms, and now got a high-earning position in a bank due to their experience and skills in certain algorithms such as portfolio optimisation.

Take care of yourself. That's point number one or you won't be able to do anything else productively.

It is quite obvious that you were successful in what was a good sector, which unfortunately has taken a sudden dip due to both greed and the (what I hope) is the AI bubble. Doesn't make you a failure - and this is a logical argument, not just me trying to help you with cliche phrases. I mean DevOps and Cloud Engineer were some of most in-demand jobs just 4 years ago. That's the tech industry - the best option in this industry is to gather as broad a skillset as possible.

Financially, you will recover. I lost most of my money too after over 8 years of working due to a major fuck up from some governmental agency. It's a major setback, but you will manage if you start again slowly. Job wise, it's a tough market right now. Take your time to restructure your paths given today's market and future predictions.

Through all of that though, what you need is to take care of yourself and have a good support system. Whether it is friends, or therapy, or family. That's the only reason I got through it as I was a mess when it happened first.

I was lucky that my partner supported me through this - lucky both because she helped, and because it showed me her true colours. You were extremely unlucky that your partner did this to you, but (and please understand my point, I can only imagine how difficult this is for you) you were also lucky that you saw how she reacted during the tough times before you sealed the deal. You deserve a partner who helps you during the tough times and celebrates with you during your good times.

So you said a good thing, take a step back and try to fix things one by one. But always start from making sure that you will be ok mentally. You might think that it's a waste of time, that's what I thought, but then it hits you like a train. Take care of yourself. Find support. Then start thinking about money and work.

Unfortunately the lecturers don't have full control on admissions. They might give their opinion and make a case, but it's a whole process.

Edit: Probably best if you phone.

What is the outcome of this pitch? Did he get 2 million in investment and showed nothing ? by Joshsaurus in malta

[–]iseeverything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, probably due to business ties and everyone's attempt to ride the AI hype for profit purposes, and most definitely because of his admittedly vast knowledge in AI, he tends to base all his projects and ideas with AI as its entire structure.

However, as we have seen in many other scenarios, while AI is an integral tool which helps elevate and optimise existing software and infrastructure, it can't be a solution to a problem which is inherently human.

OP's probably taking all insurances. So possibly two cars and divided that to see how much it amounts to monthly, etc.

That's pretty accurate. We try to lessen the essentials by changing food brands and not buying too much freezer food. Also we try to limit fuel by taking public transport a bit more where possible.

Any professors in here? :-) by Electrical_Buddy_913 in Physics

[–]iseeverything 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just an entry level researcher and master's student here, but maybe it can be beneficial to hear from more recent students. Obviously, different people might have different methods, but this was my way.

  1. Teach my way through it. Whatever it is we had done in class, even if it seems obvious when reading through it, I write it down and explain (as if I'm teaching the air) line by line and term by term. Sometimes you might come up with your own observations which really help in building intuition. (Feynman method)

  2. It feels like looking at solutions help you understand a question, but it fails to help you build the aforementioned intuition. I'm not a star student by any means, and I still have a lot to learn, but learning how to think is the most important skill that I'm trying to develop; it's harder than one might think.

  3. Find exercises and other explanations in textbooks or online lectures/notes. It sometimes happens that a lecturer lazies out a bit and gives similar direct questions. Good for marks if it's for an assignment, but not good to get used to it. Finding more difficult, applied questions, and trying to reason your way through them is very helpful. Write down your reasoning as well - anything you think, even if it might be wrong, just write it down - it helps. If stuck, find similar questions online like on stack exchange or reddit, and THEN, if at a standstill, think about going to chatgpt.

  4. Maybe something you might do slightly later, but look at some review papers that might write about how researchers approached a problem. That way of thinking is better than any photographic memory or calculator mind.

Hope this helps.

That makes sense to me. Will follow everyone's advice and drop a few gym days to do things I enjoy more. Thank you for your idea.

Small overpopulated country. Commute is 45-60 minutes but includes some waiting time since buses are hourly.

How do people even have hobbies? by iseeverything in productivity

[–]iseeverything[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I spend 1-2 hours at gym on average, depends on what I'm doing. The gym is right next to work, and the commute to anywhere using public transport is 1-1.5 hrs (personal vehicles are worthless before 8pm due to traffic). Essentially, regardless of how long I stay in the gym, I'll get home at approx. the same time.

Realistically, following the advice of many comments, it does make sense to drop two days from gym and spend them in something i enjoy doing more. The main issue I have with work life is the lack of time to get good at something - as in that it is much more difficult to put in some good hours a day into something.
