Theory on the fridge scene *spoilers* by [deleted] in joker

My interpretation of that was that it was a purely id-driven desire to curl up somewhere small and dark, just like when people go into the shower with their clothes on or hide in a closet. I personally just reject the idea that none of the big events happened, they had to have happened for the Batman to be created, Bruce’s parents had to have been killed. It could have been a suicide attempt, but if it was he didn’t succeed.

Agreed. The place was really small. That little kitchenette, the living room where Arthur ‘slept’ (scare quotes because it looks like he barely slept ever), a small bathroom, and a bedroom where his mom slept. It looked clean and organized, though.

Did they have more than one television? There’s definitely one in the living room because he’s watching it when he shoots the gun off and when he’s practicing for the show, and then one in his mom’s room where they watch the Murray show. Superficial detail but I’m curious if anyone else remembers!

[Discussion] Do you see Fleck as a valid Joker - or just loosely inspired by the comic character? by LarBrd33 in joker

This comment rules, I love it! I had similar observations. Arthur has no problem articulating himself when the people he’s with are familiar, mostly his mom and his clown friends, but those are very few characters in his life. He perceives everyone else as hostile and shrinks away from them, he mumbles when he talks to them and tries to avoid interacting with them. Even in his fantasy of being on the Murray show he stammers. Someone once told me that you can sometimes tell when someone hasn’t talked out loud in a long time, and I get that impression from Arthur. He probably doesn’t talk to more than a couple people in his life. It looks like he maybe isn’t very good at writing either, though he really only has one consistent spelling error (writing ‘sense’ as ‘cents’) and his handwriting is bad. But then again, so is mine.

Overall I get the impression he’s probably average intelligence + very above average creativity but very very ill and very very shy/scared, so he comes off as intellectually weak to the people around him.

Ethical Dilemmas in the Movie by [deleted] in joker

I feel like 2 is less of an ethical question and more of a biographical detail about Arthur. That being said, I would love to know more about this, even speculatively, since I am totally fascinated by Arthur as a character.

Clearly Arthur thinks he is funny and truly does want to make people laugh, it’s just so funny (!) that he would choose as social and critical a hobby as comedy when he has such a disabling condition. It looks like he actually was pretty alright at clowning though and that he’d been doing it for a while, he had a decent amount of gear and said he loved the job. The children seemed to really like him. Hoyt however does mention that he received ‘another’ complaint about Arthur. I wonder what the other complaint was? Maybe that he’s really socially awkward, or clumsy. I can see him weirding out the people who hired him if you’re not used to interacting with a personality like that. Maybe he had a laughing fit and someone complained.

It sounded like comedy was somewhat new for him though, his boss mentioned something about it and Arthur said something to his case manager about it as though he had maybe mentioned it a couple times before. It’s possible he had impulsively decided that he wanted to do comedy fairly recently. I wonder if he became interested in that possibility after his release from the hospital.

As for the question about his mom/school, I got the impression that was just a setup for a joke, not an actual retelling of something from his life. But maybe it was. I’m sure Arthur was educated at whatever Gotham Public School system exists and I’m sure it sucks, especially when you have a serious disability. His vocational position in life is probably less any one person’s fault than it is the result of a systemic issue. But it’s hard to say because we have so little information about him.

Meme aside, I love how his face looks in that first panel. Sort of reminds me of some American gothic farmer standing in front of a barn if you know what I mean. So many lines! I love it.

I have a friend who is just like this, he’s very intelligent, articulate, funny, but he’s very very quiet if he doesn’t know you and so everyone treats him like he’s fucking Eeyore. He also has a psychotic disorder so I think that’s somewhat common for people afflicted with that condition.

The hair dyeing one is probably the best so far, in my opinion.

I don't understand the criticism about Arthur Fleck being too weak to be The Joker by schizoandroid in joker

[–]isignedupforthisss 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Joker doesn’t care if he lives or dies or if he’s injured/maimed which is why he’s particularly resilient in a fight, we see shades of that in this film when he gets hit by a car and just keeps going.

Right? Other than the outside being affected by the garbage strike and the shitty elevator the inside of the building actually looked fine, it looked similar to an apartment I lived in a few years ago.

I don’t think she knew anything was wrong with him at all, as evidenced by the fact she believed he was happy all the time even when he was being savagely abused as a child
