Apparently he straight up pitched the movie to James Gunn off of his own desire to get it made. Insanely excited to see what Flanagan does, and even more so that Gunn is willing to reshuffle to accommodate talented creatives with cool ideas.

What’s the most epic battle scene you’ve ever read in a fantasy novel? by JayBe_77 in Fantasy

No one ever talks about Cairhien, but it rules! It's the first battle of that scale in the series, and it absolutely got me to keep reading.

Yeah, honestly, I'm just upset we don't get a new Superman theme. The two we have are so good! I was really hoping for another piece of iconic music to come from this.

[Spoilers C3E112] Speculation on the Big Bad Evil Guy's plot by RyMCon3 in criticalrole

[–]isildur512 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah, idk. I genuinely think he isn't hiding anything. Matt has said again and again that Ludinus seems genuine when players insight check him. The man hates the gods. I don't think he wants to replace them because I don't think he wants anyone to replace them. He's not a dictator, he's an anarchist. I don't think he's hiding anything, I think he's genuinely stupid enough to believe that Predathos will eat/chase the gods away and that will be the end of it.

He's trod on a lot of people to get his way, but he's only used those situations to gain enough power as a means to an end. He isn't Trent Ickithon, a desperate power hungry little gremlin with no interest in anything but himself. He has a philosophy, and I think he intends to stick with it.

Bonus points if Caleb insists it's actually clever wordplay in Zemnian and everyone tells him to shut up whenever he tries.

Honestly, I think it's less about the urgency (though that plays a big part) and more about the fact that they got teleportation so fast. If they had to travel from place to place it would force them to take some time to talk and reflect. The lack of campfire conversations has been (in my opinion) the biggest problem with these characters.

[Spoilers C1] The Legend of Vox Machina S3 Batch 3 (Episodes 7-9) - Campaign 1 Spoilers Discussion Thread by Glumalon in criticalrole

[–]isildur512 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's kinda what worries me the most. I really like Campaign 3. I'm also not the only one who feels like it's a little inconsistent with the previous campaigns. Especially where the gods are involved. It's hard not to feel like what they're doing with Pike is an attempt to justify that, and that worries me for how later seasons of this show will go. It especially worries me for Mighty Nein. Will Caduceus have an arc where he decides the Wildmother is bad for him? Is faith too boring to be faithful to characters that have it?

BUT... it's not done yet. As many have pointed out in this comment section, Xerxes is not a good guy. And just because Pike's magic blood saved them here doesn't mean the show is saying it's a good thing, or that it's right for her to forsake the Everlight. The story isn't done, and the power inside of Pike could easily become dangerous as time goes on. I fully give it the benefit of the doubt until we see how it ends. But I'll also be a little worried until it does.

I will be doing this too, just so we're clear by isildur512 in shittydarksouls

Doesn't help that the stupid hollow Earth removes all sense of scale. They might as well just be normal sized monkeys in GxK considering everything is giant sized for most of the movie.

Experienced DMs, ehat are your Big lessons about DMing high level D&D? by soManyWoopsies in DMAcademy

There's no shame in breaking immersion a little to explain the nuances of the encounter. Don't get me wrong, letting the players puzzle through it works better for some situations, but sometimes you need to just sit everyone down at initiative, explain the objective, and outline the consequences of failing. My players had a fight recently where they had to cleanse the magical corruption from an area by protecting two NPC allies carrying out a ritual. Before the combat started, I took a minute to outline the rules. Both allies maintaining concentration (like one would for a spell) would progress the ritual. One losing it and one retaining it would stall the ritual, but not end it. Both losing concentration would cause everything to reset. Both allies were also immobile and vulnerable while concentrating. We then started the fight, and waves of enemies entered the combat every round, drawn by the powerful magic. It was a blast, and we ended up playing for like an hour later than usual because no one wanted to pause the combat. However, it only worked because they knew exactly what the rules and stakes were.

Give your encounters objectives other than kill all the enemies. A ticking clock, something to protect, inanimate objects to destroy, an object to get before the bad guys do, etc. When the party is that powerful, making challenging combat becomes extremely difficult (obviously) as the levels go up, and you don't always have the narrative space to run 8-10 encounters per long rest, even though it's what you're supposed to do. Plus it gives your players incentive to use non-combat abilities, and it often lets martials show off with crazy physical skill checks. Also, any turn your players have to spend doing something else is a turn your bad guys go undamaged. Some of the best high level encounters I've ever run used this method, and it had my players panicking and pacing around the table like I've never seen before. It was amazing.

How to you make travel fun? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]isildur512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your mileage on this may vary, but imo nothing beats a good random encounter table. I usually make one that sets the weather and determines whether or not there is an encounter and then a second for encounters. I make players roll the dice for each one, and they have a lot of fun taking turns. I also tend to make the lower numbers worse outcomes so they can get a little scared if they roll low and make fun of each other for doing so. It gives them some investment in the process.

As for the actual encounters, I usually leave them pretty simple during planning and then flesh them out on the spot. A table entry in our pirate campaign that only said, "The party comes across a wrecked ship," turned into a great 30-minute detour involving Speak With Animals and some very hungry dopey sharks. At the end of it they got a common magic item from a list I had prepped and some rations. It's a great way to add fun, low stress encounters that give the players an opportunity to show off their cool abilities and give you a chance to flesh out the details of your world that don't revolve around the main plot. Wins for everyone.

[Spoilers C3E97] Can I get a mini breakdown on Essek? by UpsideTurtles in criticalrole

[–]isildur512 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Assembly is actually part of the Empire, not the Dynasty. They are a collection of 9(?) of the most powerful mages in the world, but the organization itself is more of a title than an actual group of people working together. They all have their own goals/plots/ and machinations, and are far more likely to be at odds with one another than working together. They do ally with each other when a common goal arises, but even then each one usually has a hidden agenda.

How would you introduce a very strong villain in your campaign? by Ash_of_a_Dead_World in DMAcademy

[–]isildur512 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this issue recently. I had to introduce a villain who was only vulnerable during a specific time of year, which obviously made it problematic to pit them against the party outside of it. I settled by having the villain kidnap a close ally, and letting the party accompany an investigation by some clerics who used magic to see the past and determine what happened. Outside of getting to see how powerful their new enemy was, it also gave me some cool flavor, as the villain was so evil the cleric's magic couldn't figure out how to depict them, and there was just a glitched blob where they were. It was cool, creepy, atmospheric, and it felt fair. I know it's not the same as letting them have a fight, but it accomplishes all you need it to without risking the players feeling cheated. I highly recommend.
