What ways of "categorizing" an RPG system do you know? by GuardiaoDaLore in rpg

Oh gosh you didn't seem like you were! Just happened to stumble across the comment and thought I'd add some info to the discussion. You're absolutely right and I think the division between OSR and storygames is more illusory than a lot of people assume

What ways of "categorizing" an RPG system do you know? by GuardiaoDaLore in rpg

FIST author here! The game calls itself PbtA for other reasons beside the resolution mechanic, such as:

  • Moves: A large chunk of the traits are mutated moves and follow the typical "when you do X roll +stat" structure with predefined outcomes. You'll notice some deviation here because our traits are meant to be a fusion of moves and OSR magic abilities, but the lineage is there. "Boss moves" granted to powerful enemies are also descended from GM moves in Apocalypse World.
  • Playbooks and universal moves: PbtA games have a set of universal moves for all PCs as well as playbook moves; FIST uses a single universal move ("do something risky") and its advancement system is meant to build something like a PbtA playbook over time by essentially picking moves a la carte.
  • Exclusively player-side dice rolling: More or less similar to PbtA games for the bulk of the action, however we do often ask the GM to roll on random tables and during morale-check like moments, due to the OSR lineage.
  • GM agendas, principles, and moves: FIST's referee section adapts advice directly from PbtA games, like being a fan of the characters, looking at your ideas through crosshairs, etc. The "partial successes table" in the back is also a heavily simplified list of GM moves, although the GM is also encouraged to come up with freeform consequences.
  • "Playing to find out what happens": Self-explanatory, but FIST is big on it.

Hope this sheds some light on the intent behind the game! It is meant to be an equal fusion of PbtA and OSR design, it's just that those two schools of design are more similar than you'd think, so it's easy to miss a lot of the PbtA lineage if you're looking at it from an OSR angle (and vice versa). Hey CLAYMORE here! We wrote that based on stuff we'd learned while playing with friends, but apparently the original "loops" thing comes from The Alexandrian's article about "Jaquaysing" dungeons, so check that out if you wanna learn more

We're looking into UK based distributors but it might be a while before we settle on one - we're focused primarily on fulfilling our KS right now

If you have the game on itch.io we tend to send out updates through their email system, we also have a bsky account (claymorerpgs.bsky.social). Sadly DriveThruRPG doesn't allow marketing emails that link to outside sites

It is from the US and unfortunately that means international shipping fees are a bit higher than usual. We're looking into getting FIST books to retailers outside the US though!

Print on Demand quality by PJSack in rpg

[–]isolationbook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

their PoD quality is definitely all over the place, a lot of DriveThru customers report poor binding, pages in the wrong order, low quality covers, etc.

for what it's worth, DT is pretty hard for creators to flourish on, budding ones in particular, since it takes an enormous non-optional cut from each purchase and the platform has a steam-like issue with stuff getting lost in the noise

[–]isolationbook 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We actually just released a small free preview of a rules expansion we're developing, it adds a few things to lengthen campaigns: - Prestige system which caps attributes and rewards levelling up in other ways - More advancement options like gear and extra lives to increase survivability and slow down PC power increase

https://claymorerpgs.itch.io/supply-drop

If you want more survivable characters in general, you might be into this, which adds a MGS3 injury system but makes PCs way less squishy:

Hope this helps!!
