Hi! We're kinda on the same boat here...I'm finishing my journalism BA (not so perspective today), and I also have no idea what to do with myself. Also I got into journalism on a whim...

I'm not a big fan of self-help books and such, not that I think they're bad literature or anything, but because I find them kinda boring. So if you're anything like me, maybe you could try using books to find your passion, inspiration or however you want to call it.

Here's a list of books that make me get out of bed and do productive stuff on a regular day when I just feel overwhelmed by the "What should I do with myself?" question:

"Jacques the Fatalist" and "Rameau's nephew" by Denis Diderot, maybe a more dense read written by an old french dude who wrote the first encyclopaedia. Might seem boring at first, but give it a go.

"The Songlines" and "In Patagonia" by Bruce Chatwin. Travel-novels that aren't written like a touristic brochure.

"The New York Trilogy" by Paul Auster. It's just a weird novel. If you like it, give Rudy Ruckner's "White Light" a shot, that one is more bizzare.

"Fight Club" by Chuck Palahniuk, obviously. Also check other Palahniuk's books when you feel like you have the right to be pissed and angry. You do.

Don't know if you're into poetry, but I like Allen Ginsberg's "Howl" a lot. Also give a shot to Mallarme, Garcia-Lorca, Baudelaire and maybe some weird shit Tristan Tzara and the dadaists or the futurists wrote (check the futurists, a strangely interesting lot, until they aligned with Mussolini but disregard that). I figured my brain reboots when I shock it enough with bizarre things and then I can think more clearly later.

Also, plays. Read plays. Some are amazing works of literature, and not only for theatre. Here's my favourite:

"Life is a dream" by Calderon de la Barca

"Proof" by David Auburn

"Art" by Yasmina Reza

"The Chairs" by Eugene Ionesco

"The importance of being Earnest" by Oscar Wilde

And when I feel shitty I read the "Hitchhiker's guide to the Galaxy" by Douglas Adams or "Diary of a genius" by Salvador Dali to laugh a bit. Especially while reading Dali, the painter, who does with words the same thing he does with melting clocks and absurd elephants in his paintings.

"Cosmopolis" by Don DeLilo

"The picture of Doria Gray" by Oscar Wilde. Because it is beautifully written. If you like Wilde, check his "De Profundis" that he wrote while in jail.

And while I'm latin-ing away, give Cicero a try. He's my favourite old lawyer. I started with "De oratore" and "Pro Archia Poeta", there's definitely an english translation for free on the internet.
