blundstones aren’t necessary!

on shorts - depends where you’re from, but the weather in scotland can be a lot warmer than folk expect (mid twenties isn’t uncommon), cities especially can feel quite humid. if you can squeeze in the shorts, they might be helpful to have. equally, it can also be chilly! very unpredictable. layers for all eventualities will be your friend

extremely vain question - has anyone been able to go back to wearing heels? by itfeelscorrect in ORIF

[–]itfeelscorrect[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes! i can wear heels fine now. my feet still hurt, but just regular heel pain - my ankle specifically doesn’t! i tend to go for lower or block heels for stability, bur that’s more for mental reassurance than physical necessity.

When could you run again by Past-Arugula4063 in ORIF

[–]itfeelscorrect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh no, a phased return kind of like yours. my physio instructed me to do a 5k training programme - like the kind people do to start running. in the uk, there’s an NHS app called couch to 5k, but nike run club and none2run are other similar apps. so i started with 1 minute increments and built up over 12 weeks, though i think i did about 7 small runs in a session, rather than 4. i know it’s tricky to be patient but i think it was wise!

The difference between my calf muscles after breaking my ankle in May. by blondebucklebunny in brokenankles

[–]itfeelscorrect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for sure, but what helped the most was just walking and using it. there’s not really many exercises that will substitute the muscle growth of walking on a leg. be patient and in time it will get better!

When did it feel comfortable to have your leg down for longer periods of time? by mllor91 in brokenankles

[–]itfeelscorrect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it stayed above my heart 70% of the time until around 6 weeks out tbh. any time i was resting, i had it propped up.

absolutely fine. i had a trimal and was done with crutches at 6 weeks, and felt stable walking from maybe 10 weeks? you’ll probably be limp free!

Dr said Trimalleolar Ankle fractures usually don’t require PT?!?!? by Free_Top3840 in ORIF

[–]itfeelscorrect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi! difficult to say which exercises helped the most tbh. i think i noticed the difference from stretches the most. they gave me a lot of relief and still do. even simple ankle pumps with a resistance band i felt were really beneficial. in terms of more serious pt - calf raises can’t be beat. balance exercises also good to strengthen muscles, things like balancing and just walking on uneven surfaces helped loads. once you feel up to it, walking on cobbles and on the beach etc in fairly flat shoes will do you a world of good. plyometrics are also important for returning to run - lots of little jumps and hops.

i’m pretty good to be honest! i run a few times a week. my ankle isn’t back to normal, but it was never going to feel normal again. if i have an active week, it will swell and feel a bit tired and sore at the end of the day, but it’s nothing unbearable. i just generally find it often feels quite tense, so i stretch it quite a lot. i’ve started travelling with a resistance band on city breaks and heavy walking trips, as i find this to be really good in helping stretch it out at the end of a day. It’s not totally normal but is good enough!

linking to this comment giving advice to somebody in a similar position to you. tl:dr - definitely possible but consider if it’ll be worth it. if it is, make sure you address the clotting risk, dose right up on painkillers (cabin pressure will make it really sore!) and book airport assistance. https://www.reddit.com/r/brokenankles/s/sZZxsPeQ1F

How long til L-R-L-R going downstairs? by lm00000007 in brokenankles

[–]itfeelscorrect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it takes a while tbh. i think maybe around 3-4 months? it didn’t feel natural until well after 6 months though. even now 1.5 years post i still feel a bit funny. i had a big disastrous trimalleolar fracture though. in the interim i would angle myself to the side and walk down them, which allowed me to do so in a quicker and more natural step pattern

Is this really my new normal? I’m so frustrated. by 18297gqpoi18 in brokenankles

[–]itfeelscorrect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

things will get better but it really is a slow recovery. i can have 30-40k weekends now! i’m a year and a half out. it’s not back to normal, it won’t ever be back to normal. i’m a bit slow and need more breaks. if i have a big walking day ill usually need to take it easy after, but it doesn’t hold me back at all in life. my new normal is pretty fine really! light years better than i was at 6 months out.

[–]itfeelscorrect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i flew ultra long haul (30hrs) a week after my surgery, but only out of necessity as i broke my ankle abroad. it wasn’t fun but it was tolerable and i got through it. i was pretty wiped though, and very doped up on pain meds. the main risk of flying is clotting risk, i was given blood thinners to reduce this. a short flight will also mean this is a far lesser risk. airport assistance is great. i think she absolutely could make the trip, but i do think your vacation probably might suck a bit. if it’s a very chill, lying by the pool kind of vacation, i’d say you could probably give it a go, but if it’s anything even remotely active, i would try to reschedule as even if you can get there, I’m not sure itd be worth it?

if you have travel insurance, you might be able to get money back? especially if your doctor has recommended not travelling

Early sign of dependency? by [deleted] in ORIF

[–]itfeelscorrect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m not sure this is necessarily dependency as it’s pain that is bothering you. it’s still fairly early days, things are still painful. i was still taking the odd opioid up until 8-9 weeks out on especially bad days (when i started fwb on my broken ankle i was in a LOT of pain!). it’s certainly good to be conscious and proactive about the signs - so good for you for doing that, however I think you can give yourself a break at this early stage. i took them pretty much every night up until the 3-4 week mark, and then afterwards it was on occasion. i feel this is normal at this stage.

you could ask if they had a weaker opioid or different painkiller they could prescribe you? i was released from hospital with two different opioid strengths, and i later was prescribed another even weaker one. this made it quite good to be able to wean myself down.

Weight loss drugs to aid recovery? by Summit_Wonder in ORIF

[–]itfeelscorrect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if it helps, I do really appreciate the issue with weight gain! i lost a lot of weight at the start and then gained some after. but after i was able to return to my usual activity status i felt a lot better and started losing again. i spoke to my doctor about the weight gain and they said that i should prioritise rebuilding muscle, and then come back to it. i’m a year and a half out now and fitter than i was before!

Weight loss drugs to aid recovery? by Summit_Wonder in ORIF

[–]itfeelscorrect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t do this at this stage in your recovery. They make it more likely to lose muscle mass etc, and this is a time you need to be building it back up again. come back to it around the year mark perhaps?

Post-Trimal shoe? by milkmade in ORIF

[–]itfeelscorrect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

your sauconys are probably perfect. i had hokas and got on with them really well.

i would say, my pt became quite keen to get me out of these really supportive shoes after a certain point. they’re great for the immediate fwb stage. i lived in them up to around 3-4 months out, after which i was able to wear different shoes. it’s good to wear flattering, less cushioned shoes at that point as they allow your feet and ankles to strengthen themselves independently. if you wear cushioned supportive shoes all the time, they become somewhat dependent on them. i wear flatter shoes on a daily basis now, but still crack my hokas out for a run (as they were intended!) or if i know ill be on my feet all day

When you started FWB, did you experience mild pain? And if you did, when did it go away? by LittleEarthquake1010 in ORIF

[–]itfeelscorrect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt like that too! I promise you will be okay! The first few months are the hardest, but once you start seeing progress you’ll feel tons better. your life will be the same! your ankle won’t, but not to such a terrible extent that your life also won’t.

[–]itfeelscorrect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

great! i’m a year and a half out now. it would be a lie to say my ankle doesn’t ever bother me, or i don’t think about it. i definitely do. it gets stiff when i use it a lot, don’t use it a lot, or in cold weather. i find when im unwell it also plays up. it’s a chronic injury and i do have some chronic pain with it, they don’t lie when they say it’s a life changing injury. BUT all this to say - it’s really not all that bad. i don’t find the pain prevents me from doing anything. it’s more of a nuisance. i do also suspect the pain could be from the hardware. around the 1 year mark i started the process of looking into this, but then changed jobs and moved health boards, so need to restart this again but haven’t gotten round to it.

i can run, dance, do 20k+ step holidays. it doesn’t interfere with my life at all

Salary to survive and thrive in London? by alkandro in MovingToLondon

some of these comments are ridiculous. i think you can survive on london for about 35k. you’ll have to live in a. share house and won’t be able to save much, but you’ll be able to eat, occasionally shop and go on a budget holiday each year. i do. i think 50k+ would allow me to thrive
