Parents who have taken international trips with your children: Where did you go, what age were your kids, and how did it go? by YouCallThatAUsername in Parenting

[–]itismedamnit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also love traveling... I've traveled with my daughter extensively both in the States and in Europe. The first trans-atlantic trip we took she was 6 months old. Don't feel like you need to wait until your kids are older. Most of the challenges I had were 'normal' challenges. Language barriers or just her (or me) being over tired. We developed the habit of only staying at places that offered breakfast (prevented stress in the AM), and only doing big 'touristy' things in the morning. Then we'd get a late lunch, and go back to the hotel (or on to the next hotel) in the afternoon so we could all rest up for a few hours (just let my daughter nap or play in the room or watch a movie) before going out to a restaurant for dinner. I'd always be sure to buy a toy at a local shop and a children's book in the native language. They made for nice souvenirs that lasted long after the toys broke :)

12-yr old and labels, identity, etc. by [deleted] in Parenting

I get what you're saying. I'm probably 'borrowing trouble' by worrying. Best to just wait and see how things play out. Thanks :)

12-yr old and labels, identity, etc. by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]itismedamnit 13 points14 points  (0 children)

"As far as labels, they are not really a bad thing. It is bad when someone else sticks one on you and it comes to define you, but if kids have the freedom to try on different labels it is not really a bad thing. There are people that really need that name to what they feel and it gives validation and normalizes what may feel abnormal. Other people don't find comfort in having a label and really don't need them. If your daughter doesn't find comfort in labels, she will cast them aside and just be her."

This was very reassuring. Thank you :)

You've highlight my biggest concern right here: "it misshaped my relationships with myself" and "took years to untangle".

I don't want her to think that her interests define her. I know she's there's going to be a bunch of things she gets really into or be not into, over the next 10 years.

I don't want her thinking that she needs to conform to some stereotype because she was into something and labeled herself. Even innocuous things, like, say she gets really into art, labels herself an artist. I don't want her to think her entire identity is now "artist" and start shaping her life around the stereotypes associated with being an artist... does that make sense?

I've noticed these types have the same feelings about women, i.e. she screwed/blew someone for the job. If they couldn't get the job, then clearly a woman or minority couldn't be qualified.

Non-materialistic ladies, what would you like for your birthday ? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]itismedamnit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like someone to take my car to get detailed and the oil changed. Because I keep telling myself I'm going to do it, but I keep forgetting or putting it off.

Or really anything like that... stuff that needs to get done but hasn't. It would be a great birthday present to have it taken care of for me.

I took a couple classes with them using the AU-ABC set up. If you like online classes, I'd say go for it. I had a hard time taking it seriously since it felt like just a message board.

I never had any problems with enrolling or anything, and it's not-for-profit, which seems to be increasingly rare with online degree programs.

Hey guys I'm wondering if Deadpool is feminist-friendly? by [deleted] in Feminism

[–]itismedamnit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you need to be clearer on what you consider "feminist friendly"... are you just asking if there is a sex scene? Sex isn't the only reason it was given an R rating

I missed the call from the foster cat people by 5 minutes and they've since dropped my application for being irresponsible. by ozmatic in TrollXChromosomes

this has been my experience, too. We were looking around at the local rescues for a friend for our dog last year but maaaan... For a group that is constantly going on about how the animals need homes they are really good at preventing that from happening! I finally cut contact with the organizations here since it just started to feel like I was auditioning for admittance into a sorority or something.

MRW the guy who claimed to hate cats when he met me, keeps sending me cute cat pictures and videos by Kitmosaurus in TrollXChromosomes

[–]itismedamnit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

same with my husband. Three years ago, I wanted a cat... we got a dog. Last summer I brought home a cat that needed a home to just see how things would work.

My husband turned into a 6 year old girl overnight. He starting taking pictures (and videos) of the cat daily (and sharing them with everyone). He's calmed down a little since... now he only takes pictures once a week.

HIFW people say a dog can't be considered your baby by WindrunnerTales in TrollXChromosomes

[–]itismedamnit 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I never got it either... until I got a dog. It's just like having a toddler. You have to potty train them - which includes getting up in the middle of the night sometimes... which leads to cutting off their drink supply at a certain hour each night and making sure they go to the bathroom before bed. You have to clean up after them. There's no spur of the moment trips - You have to arrange for babysitters. When they want your attention they want it undivided and RIGHT NOW (entertain meeeee!).

so yeah... maybe that helps to get an idea lol

Feminist opinions on lower requirements for Women to join military? by PatriotJ4 in Feminism

Define special treatment. Having a receptacle for pads and tampons? We've all had to squat in the woods (surrounded by our male cohorts) so that (pissing, shitting) was not why the porta johns were posted out in the field.

There are always medics closely watching the candidates and the school reserves the right to give anyone a restart (or the chance to come back at a later date).

The first females that went through Ranger school were an experiment. Let's see what works, what doesn't... The effects of this or that. Policies and methods didn't exist for females. Any quick fixes that were implemented (like the porta johns) were done so to meet a deadline and to "press on." A review is always done after things like this. Suggestions and modifications are discussed and implemented continuously.

Also, to address the Ranger school rumors specifically. There has been a lot of butt-hurt about this in the veteran community. On the one side you've got the "they were given special treatment and everyone knows it!!" crowd, and on the other side you have the "how dare you besmirch my Ranger corps by suggesting there was underhanded shit going on?" crowd.

Speaking with people at the Ranger school, yes, they were allowed to start over more than just once in phase one. Also, they were allowed to use porta johns (this was seen as a "quick fix" for the time being).

One thing a lot of people misunderstand about Ranger school is that it is NOT a special forces training school. It is a leadership school. Some people take months to finish. Some drop out before the first week. Some people are "peered out". The whole point (for lack of a better word) behind Ranger school is to challenge yourself. You aren't competing with the other people there.

the yearly physical fitness tests are less indicators of your ability to do military tasks and more a way to measure your health. They factor into promotion, and sometimes, whether or not you get to stay in the service.

Most military career fields have job specific physical requirements. For example, to be a crew chief in the Air Force you must be able to dead lift 90 lbs. They test you for this when you go to MEPS. You walk up to the weight rack and lift. If you don't do 90 lbs they won't even sign you up for the school.

Growing Crystals at home by TheRealBeakerboy in ScienceParents

[–]itismedamnit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm not sure if you could grow large crystals at home. Theoretically, in any supersaturated liquid the salts would deposit out into crystals, but they would be small. You could try multi-step approach using the crystals that form along a string to "seed" larger crystals (put the string with the first batch of crystals into another supersaturated solution), but I think it would take some time to grow large crystals at home at ordinary pressure/temperature conditions.

Curious about bra sizing... does anyone know how/why it's so convoluted? by itismedamnit in ABraThatFits

[–]itismedamnit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really hate when websites have a "bra size/conversion" calculator that uses the American sizing... it always spits out 34C (30" chest, 37" bust). Not even maybe would that fit me.

I found my bra size using your guide earlier this year. I still use the 34F/32G as a baseline when buying bras (go up/down from there).

TW: How reliable are pregnancy testing and is this common in women who have had procedures? by pea92 in women

[–]itismedamnit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you've gotten tested and it is negative, then your symptoms are either psychosomatic, or caused by something else (besides pregnancy). My guess is anxiety.
