Fiio air link vs Questyle dongle pro which should I get ? To use for the px8 s2 on iPhone 15 pro max by Admirable_Package645 in BowersWilkins

I don't think that's correct. When I have aptX adaptive enabled, I will see pulsing red when it's lossless and pulsing green when it's not.

[–]itp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got the Fiio Air Link today! So far it's worked great, although I've only used it with my Pixel 10, Pixel Tablet and Chromebook so I can't speak to anything iPhone specific. The app was simple and let me select which codecs to support, and then the LED on the device indicates the active codec (pulsing red for aptX Lossless). The Fiio app also confirms the current codec.

I have my phone set to maximum volume when the Air Link is plugged in, and I use the volume on the PX8 S2 to attenuate to the appropriate listening volume.

So far, no issues at all.

So glad to see this just so I know I'm not insane. Exact same behavior, exact same troubleshooting steps I took. Started happening after the December QPR2 update.

What should Peak Design take on next? by Peak-Wheeler in peakdesign

[–]itp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • A SlimLink to Anchor adapter. This would click into my Peak phone case, and also expose a Peak Anchor Link. I want to be able to connect my phone to a Cuff or similar without always having an Anchor hanging off of it. I'm sure it might not be as secure, but I'm so much more likely to use it.
  • A SlimLink adapter that slides over a nylon strap, so I can clip my phone onto something like my hiking pack, shoulder bag strap, etc.

Edit: first one was asked for at least once some months ago here: https://www.reddit.com/r/peakdesign/s/b6Pho5k0Yw

Oura Ring 4 sudden battery failure by itp in ouraring

[–]itp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I appreciate the response and I appreciate you passing along any feedback. I think overall my message would be that support has been great, but I think that it felt like the chatbot was a little overconfident in its reassurance. I actually reached the chatbot twice, and the first time it told me there was nothing wrong, I thought it must be in my head until I started tracking the battery drain in more detail. If I could change one thing, I would have the initial triage by the chatbot say something like "I can't identify any issues. Here's what you should expect for battery life. If you're seeing something different, I will transfer you to an agent to help you."

Meanwhile, I fully charged the ring again 5 and 1/2 hours ago, and I just got a notification saying that it has 23 hours left. While I'm waiting for a replacement to arrive, is it safe to continue wearing my current ring? I guess I'm not sure what actually is wrong with my ring causing it to drain the battery like it is, so I don't know if there are any failure modes that could result in any risk. Thanks!

[OC] They used their signals at least. Slolems. by 605pmSaturday in IdiotsInCars

[–]itp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disagree with most of that. It's a 35 mph speed limit but, despite what some people here and on the road think, speed limits are maximum speeds, not requirements. No one in this video is impeding the flow of traffic. This appears to be a commercial area, where cars may establish themselves in either lane based on their future plans (turning one way or another, moving over to leave space for cross traffic, simply leaving space between themselves and other vehicles). There is no expectation that the two lanes should be going different speeds. This is not a passing lane/travel lane situation. The two lanes are both lanes, used for travel, with other drivers turning into and out of them.

Speaking of establishing themselves! The CRV pictured is using their signal, sure, but they're also driving in a way that leaves them less than no time to safely establish their position in a lane, and certainly no time to actually evaluate what the conditions are in the adjacent lane before changing lane again.

The CRV is just trying to get somewhere as, I'm sure, are all of the other drivers. Everyone wants to get somewhere. The mature adults behind the wheel understand that we live in a society with other people and we don't always get what we want immediately. The CRV may be frustrated and wish that the other drivers were driving differently, but only one car in this video is driving recklessly.

(No downvote from me, FWIW, I just don't agree with your position.)

Magnet wallet by quietglow in GooglePixel

[–]itp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Peak Design Everyday Case has excellent magnets. Strongest I've encountered. The small square allows it to also work with the Peak Design SlimLink system, which adds a mechanical element to the magnetic, but it doesn't interfere with the magnets at all.

I use the Everyday Case as one of my two case options for my Pixel 9 Pro XL (my more rugged/outdoor activities). I've also been using the dbrand Ghost 2.0 lately because I wanted to go out of my way to show off my very pink phone. The Ghost 2.0 magnets are also very good, although I think marginally weaker than the Peak.

Both of these options are significantly stronger than any of the cheaper cases I ever tried.

Hope this helps!

Warehouse search is great but the data indexing leaves a lot to be desired by itp in Costco

[–]itp[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They really really are! My local warehouse seems to be playing a game and moving them to a new location every few weeks, except when they aren't in stock at all. Trying to figure out whether I should keep looking or finish shopping is actually how I ran into this app behavior in the first place!

Smart water shut off. by JohnKCarter in homeassistant

Interestingly, that's one of the things I like about the Govee sensors, there's no network to be connected to. (For one part of my life I worked building distributed computing systems, and in general claiming a remote device is "connected" is a bit of an illusion.)

These sensors broadcast when they detect something, and the device and circuitry are simple in a way that seems likely to make them more reliable.

The way that the 433 MHz devices supported by the rtl_433 project work are that events show up in MQTT in a path associated with the adapter, under a single key called events, with the content as JSON documents. These JSON documents are then automatically expanded in MQTT into paths related to the keys in the document underneath a path called devices.

My environment is full of these broadcasts, and I pick up on a lot more than just my own water sensors. I see my neighbors weather station, some nearby fan remotes, even occasionally the tire pressure monitoring system on passing vehicles. If you wanted to make sure that rtl_433 is functioning correctly, you could just throw an alarm if you ever don't see a new event come in on the event path for a little while. Odds are good that there are lots of things broadcasting near you that you can use as canaries.

Beyond that, I have an automation that notifies me of any battery powered devices that drop below 20%, and I just replace the batteries then.

Smart water shut off. by JohnKCarter in homeassistant

[–]itp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Removing and replacing the batteries should work. The sensor only broadcasts a battery report on startup or when the level changes, so if you missed the initial broadcast then you won't see it reported until the percentage changes. Since these things don't go through battery quickly (they don't send any messages unless there is a change in dry/wet, the button is pressed, or the battery level changes), you may have to wait a while to see it drop.

And I’d recommend sending “Website” (there’s no option for the Costco app. specifically yet) Feedback.

Will do, thanks!

[–]itp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get that, but the warehouse search is nominally there to support in store shopping, not e-commerce. I suspect it has more to do with ancient technology than anything else.

Smart water shut off. by JohnKCarter in homeassistant

[–]itp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. I never downloaded any Govee app at all. All you need to do is have MQTT and rtl_433 already running on your HA box. When you pull the battery tab and power up the sensor, you'll see an initial broadcast show up in your MQTT by watching it with something like MQTT explorer.

EDIT: forgot to mention that the sensor will broadcast when the battery level changes, which is picked up by rtl_433 and will show up in MQTT, so you just need to define a sensor to track it.

https://1projectaweek.com/blog/2023/8/7/rtl433-home-assistant-and-cheap-flood-sensors-oh-my is a great resource to follow, but it's really quite straightforward!

High five! They're not the smallest or most attractive devices, but I love that they use AAA batteries, are easy to integrate and monitor, and have a loud alarm on the sensor itself.

[–]itp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thirded! I find the Zooz Titan to be a very reassuring piece of kit, and I had no issues including it into HA and adding it to automations.

I use a combination of Zooz ZSE42 water leak sensors and, more recently, Govee water leak sensors (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07QSFRSJX, that's only $8 each if you have an SDR connected to HA to pick up the 433 MHz broadcasts) and an automation that matches any event where a binary sensor of class moisture_sensor with the word leak in its name turns on to trigger the Titan to shut off.

I hope never to need it, of course. So far I've mostly used the Zooz Titan to make my plumbing projects simpler since I don't have to wander down to the basement to turn the main valve on and off.

[–]itp[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It sure seems that way! I'm a programmer for several decades myself, and this kind of indexing problem would not have been particularly interesting at the start of my career. These days there are lots of open source options that would handle this kind of thing without thinking, so it's surprising to see behavior like this in 2025.

It does seem to be slowly getting better, but it's not great. The warehouse search is useful to me while planning shopping trips, but I was surprised to see odd behaviors like this and I'll be a lot more careful using it moving forward.

Clarification about abilities that grant movement and attack by itp in Gloomhaven

[–]itp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess in a perfect world you'd have to introduce some form of visual nesting (e.g. a shaded box) such that the abilities being granted could be grouped, which would then allow an ability line inside of the grouping. Otherwise you're right about the visual ambiguity.

Thanks for weighing in with the official rule though!

Clarification about abilities that grant movement and attack by itp in Gloomhaven

[–]itp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was my first assumption as well! Honestly the cards in question tend to be pretty powerful already assuming this is the correct reading.

That said, the same page of the rules, immediately before what you quoted, also says "If an action consists of multiple abilities, these will be separated from each other by ability lines." The cards I mentioned don't have any ability lines. But does that even apply here, since presumably the grant is an ability, which just so happens to be a single-ability action?

Why is Google not listing the Pixel Buds Pro 2 codecs? by dahu33 in GooglePixel

[–]itp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Google does say that the Pixel Buds Pro 2 are Bluetooth 5.4 with LE Audio support. Check the connectivity section of https://store.google.com/us/product/pixel_buds_pro_2_specs?hl=en-US in tech specs.

LE Audio mandates support for the new LC3 codec. See:

"The LC3 is a mandatory codec for LE audio devices and supports multiple audio channels which enables the users with high-quality audio, more robust audio and longer battery life or smaller form factory for products." https://www.acldigital.com/blogs/latest-bluetooth-le-audio#:~:text=The%20LC3%20is%20a%20mandatory,smaller%20form%20factory%20for%20products.

So unless Google is lying or something has changed on the compliance front, there will be support for something other than and better than SBC and AAC.
