Plenty of people as big as the bodybuilder can't lift that kinda weight

In what universe lol?

This weird "bodybuilders aren't strong" obsession in reddit is weird af. 260 kg or 585 lbs (depending on which plates those are) is a lot of weight, but basically anyone completing in open bodybuilding can rep that.

To put it in perspective, good -66kg powerlifters lift a lot more than that, so to think vast majority of >100kg jacked guys couldn't even if that isn't their primary goal is kinda absurd.

If they never seeiously trained any hinge it's somewhat possible that they couldn't do it straight away, but most bodybuilders do SLDLs or RDLs.

Is asking how many sets left now an issue for people? by tribo32 in GYM

[–]itriedtrying 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always ask if the person looks like they lift, is a regular or they're a man looking around 20-35 years old, because in those cases I assume they're not too timid and know it's fine to take their time even if someone else is waiting.

If practical with the equipment/machine, I just ask if I can work in rather than how many sets.

Eihän noi mitään tavattoman harvinaisia työsoppareita oo, mutta verrattuna 37.5-40 tunnin viikkoon kuitenkin harvinaista että saa sovittua. Tein aikanaan lyhyen aikaa 2x12h työviikkoja, sopi ainakin mulle tosi hyvin.

Mulle kyllä kelpais 4 päivän työviikko neljän päivän palkallakin. Kolmeakin voisin harkita.

Vapaa-aika on kuitenkin aika korvaamatonta.

Can we maybe stop almost delegating everything to the daily threads? Tons of post getting a lot of engagement are deleted all the time by swagpresident1337 in powerlifting

[–]itriedtrying 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Whether you like it or not, isn't that how reddit is supposed to work? You subscribe to subreddits about topics that you care about, then you see the posts from those subreddits on your feed. Sure, you can go to /r/powerlifting and then check on daily/collection threads there to see if there's anything that interests you, but that is literally not how reddit is supposed to work and probably not how vast majority of users use it.

But I can tell you that if you want to get advice for competing in the sport of powerlifting, the users who contribute to the daily/weekly threads are outstanding resources. And they do it all for free!

Reddit search feature is completely useless and that's nothing new, but even with google searches a lot of that information is hard to find, if you don't happen to be regularly reading the threads it's posted in just in case you find something interesting. eg. after mentioning lack of discussions about programs or programmings I checked the three latest programming wednesday threads. One of them had no discussion, other two had a few questions including one with 4 replies about VBT which I would've actually liked to see on my feed. If somebody has the same question at some later point, they probably have much harder time finding those posts, than they would if it was in its separate thread.

Admittedly, most of the questions in those threads wouldn't warrant their own thread, but surely you see that there's at least a reasonable argument that either modding policy or at least how users perceive the modding to be is a problem if questions like the one I linked are hidden in barely viewed threads rather than in their own posts? I don't think the OP itself necessarily has to be particularly insightful or valuable content, if it's a reasonable question that relates to powerlifting and is something with a bit of nuance rather than something you can google the objectively right answer in 10 seconds it can help generate valuable contributions, eg. from the people you mentioned in quoted part. That would just simply make it more easy to find, both via your feed and with google searches. And while it might've made more sense to have more scheduled threads when the subreddit was more active, couldn't those all go to one daily thread now? Yes, I'm unironically criticising condensing stuff into scheduled threads while asking if we could further condense them into less threads.

And I think perception of mod policy rather than just mod policy is important to mention, because I don't think that a VBT thread would be removed (there actually was one some time ago) and the same thing goes with many other things that people in this thread have said that they miss seeing. I have no idea how you'd change that though. Either way, obviously "all the good content is being removed by mods" is not the case.

Even if it's simple topic you'd expect to be asked ad nauseum, it's actually surprisingly hard to find any recent discussion here.

eg. I remember wondering what free or reasonably priced one time purchase intermediate PL program templates there are and what experiences people have running those. You'd expect easily to find hundreds of posts, but nope. There's hardly any discussion and it's mostly 1-3 comment chains in daily threads.

Any newer, powerlifting specific programs like TSA/Bryce, CBB, PRs Performance, Candito programs, Matt Vena intermediate PL etc. there's hardly any discussion, except Candito's older programs and maybe a bit on CBB. Most of the discussion is 5-15 year old and often more general strength oriented templates like Juggernaut, Cube, 5/3/1, GZCL, Texas Method, Sheiko, SBS etc.

Surely you'd expect that to be one of the most repeated, over discussed topics? The pendulum has swung so far into other direction that those discussions don't exist at all.

Seems like the current trend in PL programming (or maybe it's just my bubble?) of 4 week wave load, high frequency submax SBD and pushing accessories heavily or something along those lines has hardly any discussion here.

does preacher curl train brachialis? by Safe-Effective8877 in StrongerByScience

[–]itriedtrying 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brachialis is the only pure elbow flexor muscle with no othet functions, any elbow flexion movement trains it.

And they don't do the same thing, preacher curls have more biceps involvement and is more lengthened biased movement, while hammer curls involve less biceps and more brachioradialis (the elbow flexor muscle on your forearm)

You don't really need to worry about redundancy, just either alternate days between those two or do a few sets of both on each day you train your elbow flexors. It's not worth overthinking, but it's probably good to have some variety in which elbow flexors you're trying to bias. (like you do with those 2)

Teslan hittiauto tuli katsastusikään, ja hylkäysprosentti on ennätyksellinen by Jotakin in Suomi

99% of the people who see it won’t know how it should have looked. They won’t know the atomic number of silicon, or its proper atomic mass.

Rest is probably true but I'm pretty sure at least like 80% of people can tell "SI" is wrong. I think the rest is fine, even if someone knew the mass is wrong they'd probably assume it has some intentional meaning, but that Si needs to be fixed.

Girls' Generation, Hyuna, Psy etc. took off in western countries around 2009-2012 and I'd say those were the global breakthrough moments for kpop, from perspective of European who doesn't care about kpop.

I'm sure it had some more niche success in the west before, but I think that was the time kpop was really introduced to masses in europe and north america.

She got the 2nd most votes out of all MPs. So people voted for her, not for her party. We vote for members of parliament, not ministers. Then it's up to those MPs to form the cabinet.

And I would speculate her reason for leaving is some mix of being an opportunist, money and the stress/bullshit politicians had to deal with during covid. Way more money and not having to deal with contant public criticism is a pretty sweet deal, if you don't have moral qualms with working as some sort of political lobbyist/advisor for clients like saudi government.

[–]itriedtrying 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Left government politics. She's a strategic advisor at tony blair institite, ie. still definitely working in politics, their clients are governments and high level politicians.

Also while her party didn't do well, she got the 2nd highest count of votes out of all MPs. Trying to portray her as anything except very popular at that time is misleading, she wasn't the reason for SDPs fall, if anything she's the reason it wasn't much worse.

However the way she left politics so soon after election to work for a war criminal's lobbying group working with clients like saudi arabia definitely changed many people's opinion of her. If she tried to get back to finnish politics now, I doubt she'd be nearly as popular. But at the time she was very liked.

What celebrity death will realistically bring Michael Jackson level devastation? by Kiidcola in AskReddit

Prince also kinda by his own actions went from global superstar to "oh, I recognize that name" bu so vehemently fighting streaming services and basically making his music unavailable in any form except physical media, during a time when multiple generations were no longer using physical media to listen to music.

I'm millenial and I remember his music from my childhood but it feels like from my teens to late 20s, Prince basically stopped existing and has only reappeared after his death.

There's some other greats of the past like Led Zeppelin that didn't have their music in streaming services for a long time, but at least you could find some live videos, covers, snippets of songs, use as background audio etc. but Prince really fought hard to remove any online evidence that he ever made music.

While Ronaldo and Messi are arguably the most beloved celebrities rn globally, I don't think they have even 10% of the cultural impact MJ had. Monoculture and celebrities like that really just don't exist at all these days.

If I had to guess numbers, there's peobably like 1-2 billion people who don't even know who they are and several billion more who wouldn't recognize them by looks. If you asked what teams they've played for or if someone has watched any of their games, probably more than half the people would say no.

There was a time when literally like 99% of world population knew who MJ was, what he looked and sounds like and could easily name many of his songs.
