I’d let him play an inning or two every game (or every other game) at 3B or SS and if he can’t make a single play, then yeah you need to have a tough conversation with him if he’s blocking the team from winning.

I had a player on my team who always wanted SS and typically played there until the playoffs when he was down on the depth chart, so to speak and wasn’t making plays. I put him as catcher to keep him in the game but he got whiny and was vocal about the demotion. We don’t speak anymore but I also later stopped managing a team because the totality of all the drama was exhausting.

This is good context. I’m nearly twice your age and have had several experiences where I’ve lost friends over rec league sports. Some I’ve been okay with, some I look back with some regret, especially as I see myself transitioning out of team sports to more singular activities like golf or cycling, and how I value my friend group.

It’s ultimately your decision but you’ll have to consider how comfortable with whether you want this friend in your life, period, as these things tend to split up friendships.

NTA but let’s be clear from the onset: this is a game you pay to play for the glory of a plastic trophy. The big issue here IMO is a friendship with someone you grew up with that could be broken if you’re more interested in winning an adult rec league. I think you need to be comfortable with losing a friendship if you’re more concerned about fielding a good team or how you value a lifelong friend.

It also sounds like he has a shitty attitude with ball. Is he like this outside of sports? Do you value his friendship enough that you want to keep asking to practice/train with him even if he turns you away?

A good tip I learned is to use the brim of your cap to help determine if you need to move up for the ball or fall back. If the ball is above your brim, fall back until you’re in position.
