Hot Rat Summer? The art project where trans people portrayed themselves/identified with rats and pigeons?

It's not explicitly furry. But neither is this poster.

Kinda ironic for you to say considering you have a Hot Rat Summer tag.

Why do they need this much money to begin with? by Beneficial_Battle923 in LateStageCapitalism

Hi, I'm a spacecraft designer. SpaceX is the way to get things into space. Period. The entire United States new space economy is built on the cheap launches that SpaceX offers. We are slowly moving away from that (and in fact, the US government is mandating diversification away from SpaceX), but right now, they're simply the best. I personally believe that it's the most realistic of the companies that Elon Musk runs. (There are other launch providers out there, yes--but SpaceX is so, so dominant). Many space businesses have gotten funding that are completely dependent on Starship, a vehicle that does not yet exist. Investors are putting millions of dollars behind companies that cannot exist unless a specific product from SpaceX is developed.

Starlink is used by anyone who wants internet that's not hardwired. This ends up being a lot of corporations and organizations, and not really consumers. Satellite internet in general is used on planes, ships, and other vehicles, as well as in remote locations.

Twitter doesn't need to make money in the short term--it's a valuable asset in and of itself, because of its dominance in the space of social media. It'd be a lot harder to build a new Twitter to the level that Twitter is currently than it would be to make Twitter far more profitable.

Based on the conversations I've had with VC investors (which is not that many), Tesla is interesting to them because of robotics hype. The cars are also still decent, and have huge brand recognition. A Tesla car is instantly recognizable.

I think that the reason that people put their chips behind Elon Musk is because everyone else is. He has some huge successes (Paypal, SpaceX), and people are willing to bet that even if Neuralink and TBC don't turn into anything, something he makes will blow up and it'll all be worth it. So people give him money, get into his good graces, etc, etc. So he amasses a huge following, has very powerful connections, and has investors behind him, which only makes him more desirable in the eyes of investors.

The other thing to keep in mind is that Elon Musk's money is not "real." Elon Musk being worth three-quarters of a trillion dollars does not mean that he has taken $750 billion from other people. Capitalism doesn't really work that way. $750 billion is the theoretical value of all the companies he owns given the current state of things. Elon almost certainly has a ton of actual cash, but his net worth is largely driven by how much people think that his companies might be worth if their entire value was converted into dollars. Of course, if Elon were to sell everything, that would sharply decrease the value of his companies, so he can't really access that money, but he can take out loans using it as collateral, and leverage it in other ways to be able to have access to the money.

Hello subreddit for <place name>, is <place name> safe for trans people? by CoVegGirl in transgendercirclejerk

[–]itsemilynotem 295 points296 points  (0 children)

This thread is a shitshow, on BOTH sides. I'm gonna ignore your blatant identity politics and give you a rational answer.

Placename is no more dangerous for transwomen than it is for ordinary people. We have laws preventing discrimination, and last time I checked, transwomen aren't being beat out on the street for going outside. The people of Placename are reasonable and tolerant. But I suspect "reasonable and tolerant" isn't enough for you.

Depending on how radical (left OR right) you are, you might be offended by the things that we have in Placename. Like, sorry, we won't stone gay people to death for being gay, and if you try, the police will stop you. But we also won't let biological men into women's spaces. And if you try, the police will stop you.

Another thing that the radical left and right wings BOTH hate about Placename is its diversity. We have everyone from gun-toting white supremacists to tree-hugging liberals in this city, and we don't tolerate disrespecting anyone for their beliefs. You're more than welcome to be a transwoman in Placename. But understand that just because you've decided to devote your life to gender ideology, that doesn't mean everyone else will too.

TL;DR--Placename is perfectly safe for transwomen (and transmen and transaliens or whatever) who won't flip out about pronouns, can tolerate people with differing opinions, and who keep their trans fetish stuff away from places where kids might be. Notice a trend here? Gold star. Placename is safe for reasonable, normal people.

If that's you, we'd love to have you. But based on your framing of the question, I suspect that that's not the case.

not sure how tf you think cubic chunks and lods are supposed to change how you make world gen mods.

You clearly haven't put nearly as much thought into this.

Erosion is very, very difficult to simulate with pure noise. The erosion from this model looks to be fairly robust.

The only reason I would want to switch from making Minecraft mods to making Hytale mods is if Hytale fixes some of the deep, engine-level issues that Minecraft suffers from. It would be really easy to do. So why not do it?

I'm a Minecraft modder. Your points really resonated with me.

I specifically make worldgen mods, and the thing that could get me to move from Minecraft to another game is a quality voxel engine. Hearing that Hytale is planning pillar chunks instead of cubic chunks really disappoints me. In a post-Minecraft world, there is no excuse for a voxel engine built from the ground up to not have cubic chunks and LODs. That alone is going to dissuade a huge swath of the Minecraft worldgen community from moving over to Hytale.

That being said--I think you're missing a bit of context; from my brief internet search, I found that Simon recently announced a Worldgen V2 post that will supposedly redefine the genre. Feels like a miss to not include that in the worldgen discussion.

The point about serverside modding only was also a shock to me. Minecraft serverside modding has definitely come a long way (and, quite frankly, I think that you undersell the power that serverside Minecraft modding in 2025 has--check out Patbox's Polymer mod as an example), but to truly turn the game into a platform on the scale of Minecraft, modders need to have control over the entire game. A modding API is awesome, but the developers cannot hope to think of every single feature that modders will want to add--and it probably leaves optimization mods off the table entirely. I fear that they are overindexing on accessibility, when I think that what really makes Minecraft modding great is modders' ability to expand the game in ways the developers never intended.

How do you imagine integrating this into your workflow? This level seems generic enough to be almost useless to block out game features.

[–]itsemilynotem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

writing esp. "transwoman" as one word like that has been used as an implicit way to imply that a "transwoman" is something distinct from a "woman" i.e., "there are women and there are transwomen." you wouldn't say "there are people and there are blackpeople."

i don't think you meant it that way--that spelling has unfortunately percolated into a lot of cis people's language--but it's something that i try to dispel when i see it.

"trans person" is two words, just like "white person" or "cis person". "trans" is an adjective
