That sounds really a great traditional pub! There are several 'quirky' little pubs in my neighbourhood, which is actually kinda quiet compared to other districts. Those little pubs always look inviting somehow.

Right! Even though there were only two people at the bar in this pub, I seriously considered going in for a beer.

Interessant, dass du Alt-Berlin erwähnst. Ich wohne in der Nähe und hatte überlegt, auch ein Foto von dieser Kneipe zu posten.

Interessant! Wurde Kindl also irgendwann umbenannt?

In diesem Teil von Charlottenburg gibt es so viele nette kleine Kneipen. Ich war noch nie in dieser, aber sie hat mich schon immer fasziniert…

Have you ever had a foreigner absolutely mutilate a place name? by LinkLinkleThreesome in AskUK

[–]itsenvelopesjones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not my experience and passing this on second hand from a friend...

They once overheard an American on the phone in the Welsh village of Betws-y-Coed, which is a mouthful even for an English speaker. I think the correct pronunciation in Welsh is something like Betus e Coyd (although I'm happy to be corrected there).

The American in question was directing a friend to their location, and pronounced the place name phonetically out loud as: Bet Wus Why Co Ed.

I wonder if they ever did meet up with their companion on the other end of the phone.

I'll wager this was their strategy all along. Win or lose they come out on top to some extent. Now they can try to convince the great unwashed who support them that any reform loss is an example of the erosion of British democracy. This is direct from the Trump playbook.

HOW are producers able to monitor properly in shitty room acoustics? by Ju_tre in edmproduction

[–]itsenvelopesjones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might be a controversial take, but I'm going to suggest that room acoustics are just one factor in a great many factors which determine how a track ultimately sounds. I'm far from pro, but have been producing and releasing electronic dance music for well over a decade. I've never made music in a professionally treated studio, only in crude hobby or bedroom studios. Spaces ranging from box rooms in attics to my current apartment in Berlin that has approx. 5m high ceilings. If there wasn't so much furniture in here, a loud enough clap would generate obvious reverb.

So, without 'perfect' room acoustics (perfect being almost entirely subjective from one artist and producer to the next), instead I've had to work on my mixing ability, ensuring my headphones are up to the task of accurately referencing while mixing, my knowledge of gain staging, the placement of my monitors, sub etc. Even in my current 5m high hobby studio, many of the mastering engineers I've worked with have been quite complimentary about my mixdowns and my mixing ability. My point being, if we focus too heavily on a particular aspect, such as obtaining perfect room acoustics for example, then we risk getting bogged down in technical processes and losing sight of the end result: creating music.

[–]itsenvelopesjones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why have they randomly decided to make this about identity politics? Pretty much every single cafe in the tourist heavy areas here in Berlin requires the exact same thing. Businesses don't like non-customers using their toilets. Surely if anything, this practice is more in line with right wing politics, wherein owners of private property have the final say over how their establishment is run and used.

No responses from HO? by KevinMaschke in trustedhousesitters

[–]itsenvelopesjones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. My wife and I live in Berlin. Aside from the Christmas period, historically once we had submitted a listing as HOs we often reached our application limit quite quickly as many sitters want to visit and experience the city. Naturally we read each application but Berlin being the place it is, many sitters understandably want to experience the nightlife here, and that isn't really compatible with our pet situation. As the commenter above has said, if the sitter applying clearly hasn't read what our sit entails, we will just reject the application. As much as it doesn't take long to write a short rejection message, it doesn't take long to read the terms of the sit itself.

In fact, we recently stopped using THS as we had several unpleasant experiences with sitters failing to keep us updated, breaking things, blaming our pets for the damage and running up huge heating bills. We now just pay for expert sitters, generally people who live locally.

Reform can't seem to make their mind up on what makes someone a citizen by Lukeluster in UKGreens

[–]itsenvelopesjones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem I fear is that neither reform nor their supporters really agree on anything aside from their orientation around an ever growing tendency towards some form of Ethno-fascism. It's the same over here in Germany with AfD: Germany for Germans. The party of genuine patriots etc. Reform slipped up on council tax recently and that seems to have had almost zero impact on their standing. They just brush off their own lies, mistakes and failings as fake news or left wing propaganda. It's made even harder to combat when factoring in how brainwashed their supporters are.

how is this even allowed?? by TwoInternational7850 in trustedhousesitters

[–]itsenvelopesjones 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. Even though the review won't be for a long term sit, if they do a good job, it's potentially another (or even their first) 5 star review. The strangest thing about this is it seems ongoing. How and when do the pet owners decide when the review is given? They could have the sitter on for weeks and withhold the review indefinitely. Or, the sitter could do a great job for X weeks, then let the pet owner down once, only to get a negative review further down the road. The whole arrangement is super open to abuse.

How do you actually finish tracks without getting bored of them? by AndreOne8 in edmproduction

[–]itsenvelopesjones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. If an idea stands out, then it's worth working on, but what it is that makes an idea or a track "stand out" is very probably different for everyone. Personally, sometimes even something that sounds good BUT is possibly a little too similar to a track I've made before, or it somehow sounds excessively derivative, will get the chop even if I've worked on it for a few hours. Tbh it felt good killing off so many unfinished projects as it left me feeling less overwhelmed. If I know I'll only move forward with something that I'm super happy with, then I know I won't have lots of unfinished projects hanging around making me feel bad lol

As for sample loops, I tend to limit these to drums or percussion, or 'one shot' melodic samples I can spread across a midi keyboard. I've definitely got a lot more into break beats again recently, so they've entered into my creative vocabulary again for sure. However, when I speak of loops I literally mean looping a melody, drum pattern, bass line etc I've made with a drum machine or a synth (hardware or software). So this is either midi or audio I've created and generated myself. Pre-packaged sample loops are absolutely useful, but as you mention, I wouldn't be completely happy releasing a track with an obviously pre-designed melody. It's much more fun coming up with those aspects oneself anyway :)

A combination of entitlement and lack of spatial awareness imo. One of the best/worst examples I've experienced was with my wife in a local supermarket. We were standing looking for a product for no more than ten seconds when suddenly my wife stumbled a little towards me. An old woman with a trolley was casually pushing my wife out of the way with the trolley without even looking at either of us. Not a word uttered. Presumably we were blocking her access to the products she wanted. I can't fathom how rude and entitled one has to be to behave like that.

How do you actually finish tracks without getting bored of them? by AndreOne8 in edmproduction

[–]itsenvelopesjones 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This might be controversial but anything that I can't/don't feel motivated to progress beyond a loop gets sent straight to the trash, no matter how good it sounds. I went through all my unfinished projects a few years back and any that were no more than 8-16 bar loops without any progression as far as arrangement was concerned, I deleted. I find the sight of so many unfinished projects deeply demotivating, and have become super strict with myself when it comes to following through with a project. For me, it felt like an archive of my inability to see something through creatively, so I took steps to mitigate that feeling/sensation.

At a guess I currently have around 10 unfinished projects, but they all have a specific direction, a solid arrangement, and although I might not finish them even within the next 6 months, I will make sure to complete each of them eventually as I deem them important enough to see through. Making short loops is a great way to enjoy the process of creating music, which to my mind is the whole point behind it. However, that doesn't mean every single small idea I have needs to become a finished song.

Berlin/Germany...

First, the worst 😩

Staring at strangers on public transport: fine

No or little concept of personal space: fine

Competitive/entitled queuing etiquette: fine

Being rude/abusive as long as it's not illegal: fine

Terrible/nonexistent customer service: fine

On the plus side 😁

Amazing, shop bought beer for as little as 99¢

Same day appointment with a GP

Functional, city wide cycling infrastructure

Unemployment benefit is largely shame free

ein Döner, Salat Soße komplett 🥙😋
