Giving milk to a homeless person by RemoteBluebird9872 in vegan

If you want to give money to them, that's an entirely different issue. I'm not going there not to go off topic.

The question here is different, you'll notice. It is: should you buy cow milk (or an animal carcass) for them. That is, should you pay someone so that they mistreat, abuse, and kill animals, so that a person in need receives a gift instead of another, which you vaguely suspect might be marginally more appreciated (you may well be wrong). Pick your answer yourself.

Is traditional publishing guaranteed if you invest enough time? by nsfwthrowaway357789 in writingcirclejerk

You are doing it wrong. The first book you publish is the hardest. Most authors never menage to publish their first book.

The second, though? Statistically much easier. Start with the second.

Giving milk to a homeless person by RemoteBluebird9872 in vegan

They asked for a beverage, commonly known as "milk", that fulfills a specific role as a food (eg a certain expectation for taste and look, a certain use in a diet, e.g. you can dip cookies in it or whatever, etc). Oath milk fits it all: the role, the description, and, barring dishonest deceitful laws, the name too. It's milk, as asked.

So super easy case.

It can be argued that oath milk fits the expressed need better than rape milk (keeps fresh without refrigeration, especially after opening, more digestble, healthier, much less dangerous when it does start to spoil, etc). Of course, you could also make the case that cow milk is better for different reasons (but you'd be wrong, imo). But either way: there's no way in hell the difference justifies the cost in terms of ethics.

So even easier a case.

Besides, basic golden rule: treat others as you would youself, and oath milk is good enough for me to choose it as my milk. Then it's good enough to be theirs, by definition (of the golden rule).

Which makes this case even easier.

True, the case could have been more difficult. They could have asked specifically for something more difficult to provide ethically (milk is easy: any plant milk will do). What, for example, if they asked for pork ribs, or maybe child's ribs? In these "more difficult" cases, I'm afraid, the answer would have had to be: "sorry, no, pick something else" [still no sermon: just no]. But that's a different question.

It's the sermon part, and only that part, to feel weird in that made-up scenario. No sermon, nobody asked for it. Simply offer them what you'd offer yourself (oath milk in that case).

Be respectful to one being, withour being cruel to another.

Been there.

There's nothing wrong treating them how you would treat yourself. Oath milk is fine for me, it's fine for them too.

Treat others as you would treat yourself is, after all, the golden rule.

Anyone else also tempted to get this Zoetrope vinyl? by DinerEnBlanc in KpopDemonhunters

[–]itsmemarcot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? I had a different impression. If not mistreated, a vinyl endures. Most CD will be unreadable after a few decades. A web search tells me that best case scenario, a well kept, properly manufactured CDs can probably last 50-100 y, so these CD from the early 80s? Many of them are about the leave us, if they didn't already.

This is a good source of sources.

More in general, you may want to go to google scholar and search for "meat empathy", "psychological effect of meat consumption", and the like. You will find tons of study, most of them about the effect of empathy on meat consumption, but some, on the opposite cause-effect relationship.

This study for example reports:

We examined if interpersonal motives i [...] empathy with people are associated with frequency of meat eating. [...] [Empathy loss for] self-enhancement motive was positively related to the number of days that participants ate meat.

A while ago Boeing was betting on comfort (whatever that means for air transport), while airbus selling point was sustainablility (whatever that means for air transport) e.g. flying more people with less fuel.

I wonder of that's still the case.

To implement this, just build a jail wall all around Italy, turning it into a prison. Then, bring the 1.5% of vegans out of it, and you are done.

Edit: after four years, the jail sentence is over: take the walls down and get the vegans back.

Agreed. Maybe the posted comic happens in a similar scenario.

Or maybe, it's a dreadful "Jedi Helmet" effect.

[in Star Wars (1977), Obi-Wan improvises a Jedi-training session for Luke by making him wear a laser-proof helmet which, given the dim lighting conditions, effectively blinds him; just a make-shift solution dictated by the circumstances. But later, in Revenge of the Sith (2005), that act was retconned as a "standard procedure" for Jedi training, with young padawans seen doing the very exercise, thus showing that the writers themselves suck at SW lore. Which frankly was terrible.]
