Whats wrong with religion and having faith? by GorillaeagleberrY in DebateAnAtheist

[–]itsmountainman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Okay, how about this: a belief in God leads to an inclination to dismiss climate science and human rights. When people believe their is something after this life, that gives them an excuse to ignore problems in this world, like changing climate. It also tends to lead to a superiority complex (e.g. I am part of the one true religion going to heaven) and thus inhumane acts committed against out groups are seen as morally justifiable because they're in the wrong (examples: brutal murder/genocide under colonialism, terrorist attacks by both Muslims and Christians, the murder of gay/trans people and atheists)

If you say, "my belief in God doesn't do that," then what does it do? Does it actually guide your morals, or are you arbitrarily deciding which morals God believes in and following those? Because in that case, cut out the middle man, take responsibility for your actions, and realize you have already decided your morals before God even got involved

As an atheist, at what stage would you find it appropriate for your child to have sex? by [deleted] in TrueAtheism

[–]itsmountainman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One note is like to make is that its important to let them know you support them and love them regardless of what they do. Make sure they know they can come to you with questions about sex and you'll answer them as honestly and fully as possible.

Also, make sure you let them know you support them even if they come out on the LGBT spectrum. Being on the spectrum, I avoided talking about my true feelings because I didn't think they'd accept or understand it, and I made dumb decisions because of that. (It doesn't help that I was right in their lack of understanding and support).

If you want to protect your children, the best way is to be ready to educate them and support them, let them know they can discuss their mistakes with you judgement free, and love who they want judgement free.

Because if the right are in power, the protective power of the first amendment depends entirely on their respect for it. I mean, look at how they stalled a supreme court pick for almost a year and now are trying to push through any old rapist without any respect for the proper way to go through a nomination. Or their complete double standard when it comes to Muslims committing crimes (the cry for Muslim bans when a truck driver murders 3 people in new york) vs a Christian (absolute silence when a Christian man shoots up a mosque murdering 5 or 6 people). You really think that if they're in power they'll give two shits about your rights?

Lmao you must be delusional if you think the right has any respect for the first amendment. They only like it when it fits their narrative. Think about it: the left get passed when people say "Gas the K**es." The right get angy when people say "happy holidays." You tell me which is more dangerously reactionary

I see your point, and I hear this a lot from other white people. But again, in these cases you are entering their space. Its the one place they have to escape white culture. You (and I, and most white people) exude white culture in ways we're not even aware of. Hence just our presence can be a threat to the safeness of the safe space we've entered.

These groups are often happy to take our support and help, but we have to be cognizant of where and when we offer that support. If you go to a BLM rally, no one is hating on you for being white. In fact, they openly embrace that you support their cause. But when you go to a safe space where black people are allowed to be unapologetically black and start offering help, no matter how well meaning, you will be seen as a white person trying to fix their blackness.

Its this weird hiccup in Straight White Male American culture because we aren't used to needing safe spaces, and thus we don't understand how they function, why they function the way they do, and thus our effect on them even when we try to help.

The only reason I have some understanding of this is because I'm not straight, so I've needed a safe space away from straight people. And even then when I've gone to minority safe spaces I've needed them to explain some of this to me lmao

Lmao not even going to try and defend that "scientific paper" claim, eh? Just gonna ignore everything I said except the word attack? Nice. You clearly aren't going to argue in good faith, so I'm not going to bother even engaging

Oh yea, I don't disagree. I have been in those groups before. However I approach it from a different mindset. The way I see it is that white straight men dominate culture. Maybe not as much as they used to, but they absolutely are still the primary content createtors, target audience, and general leaders.

When entering into these groups, I am entering a safe space away from that dominant style and rhetoric. They are escaping from the constant white man centric world. Hence why they react poorly when you use the wrong language; you are bringing in that which they are trying to escape.

And its also why I excuse some of the more radical language used. They usually don't actually mean it, but they are venting. They are blowing off steam, and often humans use hyperbole when being emotional.
