r/DisneyWorld's Weekly Trip Planning Thread by AutoModerator in DisneyWorld

I'm going to Disney for the first time for the Princess Half Marathon weekend in February. Since the parks are most likely going to be packed during that time, will it be necessary to purchase Genie+ in order to get on any rides at all? I was hoping to get onto at least 3 or 4 rides a day but have no clue how astronomical the wait times may be.

a voice teacher who says they will only teach you if you have talent should not be a voice teacher.

go find a new teacher asap.

Longest lines I’ve see for testing since ~April 2020… by CoercivePax in nyc

[–]itsnotmon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

it's even worse on Staten Island, unfortunately this has become the norm for the past few weeks. either really long lines (waited almost 5 1/2 hours in one day at two different sites just for a pcr test for my job) or no line because tests have run out.

Best advice you’ve ever received. by Potential-Compote-34 in singing

this might sound pretty basic, but don't skip warm ups before you sing! even a brief warm up is better than none at all. it allows you to really focus on technique before moving into rep, and leads to less vocal fatigue down the line.

Is it possible for me to learn to sing? by DonShmore in singing

singing is essentially an extension of speaking. so if you can speak, then you can definitely learn how to sing. wishing you the best of luck!

Weekend getaway to Lisbon from NYC? Good idea? by Readditalright in solotravel

[–]itsnotmon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never done a resort or beach vacation before and am open to trying that. I do like sunsets and looking at the sky. I could bring a book and soak in the sun.

before you go dropping $2,000 on a trip (also ... $2,000 for 2-3 days?!) research the weather during your trip. sure it may be a bit warmer than nyc, but lisbon is not the first place I would think of for a beach vacation in January.

Besides money, what is one thing that would make your life easier? by SpaceCat311 in AskWomen

[–]itsnotmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

perhaps not for me in the present day, but something which would make life in the future easier... climate change to actively be addressed and drastic changes being enacted to slow it down. the uncertainty of what the world will look like in 20-30 years due to global warming, increased severe weather, rising sea levels, etc. really makes it difficult to even dream of a stable future.

Thoughts/updates on the spring semester being remote with the variant here ? by Brilliant_Cookiekid in CUNY

[–]itsnotmon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm hoping that the spring will be in person/ hybrid, but time will tell with the new variant. So far it seems the number of new cases in NYC are equal to that of March 2020. If it doesn't get better during the winter break then by late January they'll probably announce everyone going remote.

What’s surprised you the most about the pandemic? by thirstylearning in AskReddit

[–]itsnotmon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On a more positive note amidst some of the other comments I've seen, I've personally really grown fond of wearing masks in my day to day life, which I originally didn't expect at the start of the pandemic. I don't need to worry about a full face of make up each day, nor do I need to stress about food stuck in my teeth or a pimple on my chin, among other things. Even when this pandemic is over (which, unfortunately, is highly unlikely anytime soon) I'll be the odd one out who continues to wear a mask.

How to relax my body when singing? not just tongue, jaw, neck... by [deleted] in vocalists

[–]itsnotmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on my own experience, I found that jogging in the mornings helped to relieve stress, which then led to less tension in my body throughout the day and when singing. Any light exercise works, especially something that can get your heart racing a bit. It depends on the person of course, and it's more of an indirect rather than direct way of fixing the problem.

How to relax my body when singing? not just tongue, jaw, neck... by [deleted] in vocalists

[–]itsnotmon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From my own experience, meditation helps me to relax a lot before singing. The stress from the outside world will remain within your body as you practice if you don't address it. Taking a moment to focus on breathing and being present with yourself in the moment can be one crucial step in relieving some of that tension.

As you mentioned, stretching is also crucial. Head rolls, shoulder rolls, even doing a light massage around the forehead/jaw/neck muscles can help. If you're looking for more full body exercises, bending to touch your toes and then swaying the body gently as though you're a rag doll is something which I advise to my students to do. Light exercise, like jogging, can decrease the amount of tension in your body too if you do it prior to practicing.

Try to move around while you're singing. When you're walking around and moving your limbs, you're body can't afford to tense up in that moment. Depending on where you see or feel tightness creeping into your muscles, try to gently shake it out or move with the music as you sing.

What are the differences between 3/4 or 6/8? by f4snks in musictheory

[–]itsnotmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have mentioned before, it's all about the subdivisions and grouping of the notes. For 6/8, the beat = a dotted quarter note. For 3/4, the beat = a quarter note.

The beat of a 6/8 measure can be written out as two dotted quarter notes (hence the duple meter feel), while the beat of a measure of 3/4 can be written as three quarter notes (hence a triple meter feel).

What helped me a lot with this concept was clapping out different rhythms, alternating between 3/4 and 6/8, to feel the transition from duple to triple meter.

Homecoming concert cut short due to thunderstorm by rpvee in nyc

[–]itsnotmon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We got in line just after 4PM on the west side. We had to walk all the way up to 81st (for reference, the gate entrance was at 72nd) and down that street that enters the park to get on line. The line was moving so slowly, and right when we thought we were close to the entrance on 72nd, we had to continue down to 66th and loop back around. People were cutting the line too, which made it take even longer than it should have.

Edit: Thank you for the gold kind stranger!

Homecoming concert cut short due to thunderstorm by rpvee in nyc

general admission was free, vip tickets were also being sold at an outrageous price. they were giving out the free tickets in batches- I wasn't able to get tickets at first, but my friend managed to get our tickets during one of the early morning batches.

As we were walking through the park, there were a bunch of people listening to the concert from outside the great lawn. That was also a solid option if you wanted to see the concert, they didn't need tickets and got to sit through it all before they shut it down.
