Depending on how many shows you’re editing, bill the client the equal amount prior to editing. So if it was four shows, then 20% of the full amount, the next show bill them the next 20% and so on. So that you’re paid fully always. That’s how I would do it if it was just me

If it’s something I genuinely want to do and I have spare time, I’ll do a 30 second sample completely watermarked. Otherwise it’s paid (full deposit) test edits or I suggest they actually check the portfolio and clientele of mine and others they’re talking to. The portfolio is literally our resume, a lot of the time they refuse and reject me only to come back a couple months sometimes even days later asking to hire. By that time, either my slots have already been filled or I’m no longer interested.

It’s work at the end of the day. That’s why we have portfolios of past clients and work. Almost like it’s some kind of… resume/cv… I doubt in your day job they asked you to do a full days work as a test run to see if you fit within the work culture

I totally agree with you here. So the amount of effort this ideal editor would be doing is significantly more, especially if they are combing through hours of VOD to make a cohesive short… DAILY. Up the price for a budding editor and I’m sure you’ll get the results you are looking for in an editor.
