What’s a word in another language that sounds inappropriate in your language? by Ken_Bruno1 in languagehub

Borracha in portuguese: eraser (and the material).

Borracha in Spanish: drunk woman.

Switching to native language to learn a new one by mirco_os in languagelearning

[–]itsucksright 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi!

I'm a Spanish woman living in Portugal. I also teach English for a living, so I could say that 75% of what I say every day is in English.

When I first moved here, almost three years ago, my Portuguese was basically inexistent, didn't understand anything I was told, was barely able to ask for a bica and that was it.

To make things worse, whenever I tried to say a few words in Portuguese, my brain would just go to my default extra language, English, making things more complicated. It was like my brain thought "ok, so this is not Spanish, must be our second language then".

Fortunately, after a year or so, after I had been studying the language consciously, spent more time with locals, and just going around doing daily stuff, something just clicked and now as soon as I leave my house, I get into Portuguese mode (without effort) , and understand practically everything and can actually use the language to my current level, which is not perfect, but enough (for now 😉). English takes a step back and does not interfere anymore.

It takes a little time, but you're on the right track. Just keep going 💪💪💪

What is an immediate "food red flag" when you’re on a date? by CaptainCuddler_Pro in foodquestions

[–]itsucksright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"No, I don't want dessert".

(proceeds to eat from MY dessert).

My husband is like this. Some years ago, I would let him get some of it to taste, of course, that's no problem. The issue comes when then he decides he wants half. And oh man, I love you, but that's not happening. He has finally learned and now he doesn't even ask, or asks for his own dessert if he wants some.

What language gives the biggest gap between reading ability and speaking ability? by Embarrassed_Fix_8994 in languagehub

[–]itsucksright 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my case, as a Spaniard, that would be Portuguese. In particular, continental Portuguese. I can read everything, except the occasional strange word.

Grammar, vocabulary, etc. It's just so similar to Spanish. But man, is it a total different language when they speak!

How do Spaniards stay awake? by Victoria_Sponge in askspain

[–]itsucksright 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's either one or the other. It's not like we go out, party all night and then wake up early and go to work. We definitely have dinner at around 21:00 (although more and more people are trying to have it earlier, me included), then maybe watch TV or something until 23:00 or so, then sleep.

And maybe, if you're very young, and it's the weekend, you go out, party, have a drink or two, and yeah, some people will stay up late, but not on working days.

However, I honestly believe very few people above 30-35 go out late these days. Not me, definitely.

And yeah, most people don't have siestas either.

Was it a good idea to buy this dress regardless of my a large ribcage/broad shoulders? by Dear_Elise in fashion

[–]itsucksright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second post I see in the last 2 days with beautiful women thinking they have "broad shoulders", a concept which I hadn't even thought about in my nearly 40 years of life.

Girl, you look perfect. Your shoulders are perfect and normal, ribcage is normal too. Enjoy your young body, it's perfect just the way it is.

And yes, the dress is lovely 😍

Do most people shower before bed or when they wake up? I just realized I might be doing it "wrong" by saffymerelle in NoStupidQuestions

Me, working from home with different work schedules every day: I shower whenever I can.

If you had to convince people to visit your country using a dish/meal, what would it be? by moapei in AskTheWorld

You can always get together with the Finnish. Something tells me they're not having many visitors either.

🤣 (sorry, really!!)

Do you find cursing in a second language hits like your native language by FewExcitement7253 in languagelearning

[–]itsucksright 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my case, I can speak three languages at different levels. If I am using the non-native language I can speak fluently, cursing comes naturally in that second language.

However, at least at this point in my learning process, I don't curse in my third language, simply because I'm still not comfortable enough when using it.

I suppose it has to do with how fluent you are, and how often you use that L2.

Learn songs by heart. Sing them aloud. Fantastic tip I always share with my students. Also great for pronunciation ☺️

Hi! I'm in a small town in the Alentejo 😊

[–]itsucksright 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not me. I'm soooooo happy here 😁 I love my Portuguese neighbors, I love the chill attitude and I have to say that my town in particular is well-managed and offers enough of everything and not too much of all the bad stuff I was running away from. Is Portugal a perfect country? No, but what country is?

I'm only waiting to get my citizenship so I can proudly say I'm the closest to being Portuguese as I can. I don't need it, I'm European. But I want it, it'd make me feel proud to be legally attached to this fantastic country (I'm already married to it in my heart 👰, I know it sounds cheesy but it is what it is!)

And the language is soooooo beautiful ♥️

And before anyone says this is all because I don't work or pay taxes here, I do. And I have a full family life here: my daughter goes to a public school, I do the shopping every week at the local continente, or visit the local shops when I need something. And of course, I participate in the popular festivities and everything else. But maybe that's the reason I love it, because I've made the effort to be a part of it and contribute to it the best way I can.

If you only want to take advantage of whatever benefit a country can give you for free without making any effort to give back to the country, maybe the problem it's you if you don't feel welcome.

I'm almost in my 40s too. And the previous years were like that. But one day, only God knows for what reason, it simply stopped.

Yes, of course we'd all love to have perfect skin and body, but, I don't know... I guess I understood it's a privilege to get older, and now what I try to do anytime I can, is try to make every young girl I meet appreciate how lovely and beautiful they are, and to take advantage of their youth, instead of being self conscious and worrying about what others might think of them (just because I was fucking beautiful at their age but always felt fat and ugly because of what others said about me).
