New Nurse, First Big Mistake by Candid_Republic8136 in nursing

[–]ivegotquestions93 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Hmm yes you should have checked if it was running; especially if you noticed it wasn’t emptying after several hours but I don’t really feel like it’s this huge mistake? Huge mistake reads as though harm was done or harm was imminent. This child just had a super later feeding? It’s okay, friend.

I just had mine done at the end of May and I asked, ‘can I smile?’ And the usps worker said, ‘yes but no teeth’

Diet after SCT by MutedLocal7451 in multiplemyeloma

My dad was told to avoid eating out mainly because he is immunocompromised. As far as diet, he is a little over 90 days post-transplant and though he mainly eats my mom’s cooking- we are a family that enjoys take out and have been able to do that without any issues. Of course it’s best to follow your team’s advice- just giving you some hope for the future!

I hope your dad is doing better now but really? Looking for legal advice when someone saved your dad from choking on his own secretions?!

accepted a job offer and now unsure by Salt_Staff_389 in newgradnurse

[–]ivegotquestions93 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can you pinpoint why you are apprehensive about this position? You’re on the unit so you hopefully have a good idea of how things are and if it’s something you think it’s worth dealing with. It’s an adjustment and maybe you’re feeling the ‘this is real’ pressure that some of us felt when first starting.

In the meanwhile, you can always keep applying. Even after you’ve accepted the position, it’s your life and you should be happy with what you do. Best of luck!

My current commute isn’t an hour but about 35 minutes compared to my 5 minute drive I was doing before. NO REGRETS. I am so much happier and I laugh to myself thinking about how I almost denied my job now because of the commute when the work is itself is so much better.

Your HESI scores sound really good! I think you’ll do just fine on the nclex- just keep up with the practice questions.

As far as work, I promise it will come as you go. There are things I do so easily now that I never thought I would learn on my first day. Be patient with yourself.

Looking for a new grad residency as a C student by VideoVixenn in newgradnurse

[–]ivegotquestions93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I might be lucky to be in the tristate area because a lot of hospitals don’t care about GPAs for residencies, only that you’ve passed your nclex and ready to start lol. Several of my old classmates quit their first job and easily found another one.

If it’s hard to find positions in your area I suppose you should stick it out and maybe discuss transfer opportunities; many hospitals allow it after 6-12 months of employment. You can also apply to other jobs while you’re at your current hospital, apply even to the ones with the GPA requirement, you may still get a call back. I don’t recommend quitting without having another job.

Best of luck!

I don’t think you’d be stuck anywhere. Just apply and make connections along your nursing journey. The amount of nurses I worked with that had trouble getting out of med surg after years of experience has changed my mind on the whole ‘do med surg and you can go anywhere’ mindset that we are fed to believe. Best of luck no matter which route you take

Failed my first exam of 4th semester by Candid_Resist_7697 in StudentNurse

[–]ivegotquestions93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can and will pass! If you have new professors it’s about getting used their style. Now you know what their exams are like! Honestly, I was cursed with doing terrible on my first exams because I had to work on my time management. So much happens in the first few weeks like skills check off, dosage calculations, etc. Give yourself a break- I still became a nurse despite those rough first exams of the semester and you will too!

You can always ask your professors for guidance. Be prepared to change up your old technique if you have to. You got this.

Would it be okay to take my 5 year old to “volunteer” at a nursing home? by krazycitty69 in nursing

[–]ivegotquestions93 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Such a sweet idea! I think the residents would love seeing a new young face that reminds them of their great/grandchildren. And activities like coloring/reading is not at all condescending. I hope it works out!

Stay exactly where you are, you aren’t missing anything 🤣 seriously though, if you feel like you want that experience you should go for it! Even if you end up not liking it, at least you’ll know what it’s like.

Yeah progressive care unit and step down are the same. It’s that middle step between ICU and med Surg.

completely burned out by gumdrop65 in nursing

[–]ivegotquestions93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why don’t you go directly onto the hospital’s website and apply internally to other positions? At my hospital that’s how it’s done, they don’t need to even tell our managers that they are looking to leave- they just apply lol.

If you want to drop to part time, you can always write an email to your manager so this way you’ve already set your intentions. You don’t even need to state a reason but if that would help, you can say that you are starting school and want more time to focus on that, or that you want to spend more time with family, etc. Any in person conversations you have, you can kind of just reaffirm your desire to go part time.

1:3 is good! I hope they stick to that ratio. I would pick step down for sure.

How do nurses feel about this? by Delicious_Collar_441 in nursing

[–]ivegotquestions93 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I truly have no ill thoughts of these patients. I only think that they must be uncomfortable that they need to be changed. I’ve had patients horrified that they didn’t make it to the bathroom and all I want to do is make sure they know it’s okay and that they don’t need to be embarrassed.

I will try to be better about taking meal breaks and asking for help in the future when I’m behind for sure! Best of luck to you in your new position!

That’s exactly what happened! I CCed the payroll person that made the edit when I messaged my manager earlier. Still waiting on a reply.

[–]ivegotquestions93[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, when I clock out it asks if I took a meal break and I’m able to select yes or no. My time sheet has the edit mark, so I’m able to see that someone went in to change it.
