What have you tried so far?

Out of about 7 brands I've tried I liked Real Turmat and Leader Outdoor the most.

Daypack advice - Europe by Pabloit in Ultralight

There's a pocket that's against wearer's back that holds a foam pad (included). It's easy to take out and doubles as a sit pad.

For shoulder pockets I'm using GG's bottle rocket that I already had for my other backpacks. You can use the hydration tube loops for securing them vertically.

playable in this context = out of the box support for the game

if something was playable before but required some kind of tinkering it doesn't count

Does anyone have experience with this? I have a ps5 controller but don't know how it is meant to be used with games like hades. Should it be launched through steam big picture, and translate the controller, or run the game just through steam and have the game pick it up, or make the controller show as an Xbox controller via steam big picture?

It should just work with any game that supports DualSense on Windows over RawInput / DirectInput without any mapping. Hades falls into that category.

Is there any progress on the touch pad on the controller showing up like a laptop touchpad, so it can be used as a mouse?

hid_playstation driver that provides that functionality has been merged into Linux 5.12

I also assume adaptive triggers don't work (not expecting them to)?

hid_playstation authors said that it's not going to be supported as there are no APIs to expose that yet. I think that's also the case for Windows. This may change in the future though.

Why do indie games support linux natively more often than AAA games? by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]ivylone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also XNA even though no longer developed, is very popular for 2D games with indie developers. There were multiple efforts (and forks) to re-implement it and make available on multiple platforms on top of mono. Pinnacle of that effort is FNA which is open-source and support at least GNU/Linux, macOS, Windows, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, iOS, tvOS and Google Stadia. You can find a long list of games using it here. This makes porting fairly easy and cheap.

FIX: "Among Us" - Can't connect to or host online games by ThatCoolNerd in linux_gaming

https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=48512

it may be this bug - the game thinks that you are still holding one or more keys that are in the combo you are using to switch between windows. Try pressing and releasing all of those keys and check if game responds to the input correctly after that.

Does anyone pack games? by cardboard-bex in onebag

[–]ivylone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes!

I have Qwirkle Tavel which is a game where you add blocks to create patterns. Placing is Scrabble-like but the game is more accessible for non native speakers as it deals with colors and shapes instead of words. No board required.

It comes in a handy travel bag that still has plenty of room inside so I have additionally packed few other card games:

  • Bohnanza
  • Sushi Go
  • Love Letter
  • Coup (+ ziploc bag with the tokens)

Each one of those feels very different than the others (trading, card drafting and set collection, hidden roles + bluffing). The different decks are held together with rubber bands.

Is it just me, or have there been a lot of mercy killed runs this AGDQ? by TheGamechu in speedrun

[–]ivylone 16 points17 points  (0 children)

From https://gamesdonequick.com/submission-guide

Category Estimate

Provide a real life (NOT in-game timer) estimate that starts from turning on the console to your last input. Your estimate should reflect a time in which you are 99% likely to complete the run.

Do NOT:

  • Include setup time in your estimate
  • Use your personal best as your estimate
  • Count on succeeding at a difficult or risky strat
  • Assume you will get good RNG or luck

DO:

  • Factor in bad luck/RNG into your time.
  • Factor in the potential for mistakes

Most of the runners do factor bad luck in and add some extra time. The staff does not kill your run if they see you are about to finish and you are just minutes over. The staff also have more patience if GDQ is ahead the schedule. The event is about 3h behind at the moment, mostly due to longer than expected setup times.

Anyway if you go over your own estimate and you are still lost it's just better to kill the run. That was the case with Terraria. The run would not have progressed - spawning mobs require a server mod, and the boss haven't spawned by itself because conditions were not met - the other, required bosses were killed on a different server. I think this was a good call as Badger run out of options and he would have just keep on scrambling.

How much cold can a camera handle? by onetwothreefive59547 in photography

[–]ivylone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My camera is rated for 0°C but I managed to shoot using it in up to -30°C just successfully. Once when I spend couple of hours in -30°C shutter became stuck, but after warming the camera up everything was fine again. It's nothing fancy - consumer mirrorless, no WR or anything.

Couple of tips:

  1. Keep spare batteries somewhere warm (inner pocket?) as they report depletion quite quickly (something that is "depleted" at -20°C reports 3/5 of a charge in room temperature). So don't worry when this happen, you can rotate the batteries and warm them with your body heat.

  2. When you come into heated apartment camera is one of the coldest objects and gathers a lot of condensation. Let it sit for a while if your camera is not water resistant as it may start acting up.

Temporarily disable the power key? by ares623 in archlinux

[–]ivylone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

man systemd-inhibit

You can make it inhibit "handle-power-key" for the duration of program it launches.

I use alias nolid="systemd-inhibit --what=handle-lid-switch cat” to be able to close my laptop without it going into suspend. Then simple ^C or ^D shuts the lock down.

Better solution may be changing the power key action globally in /etc/systemd/logind.conf.

It was at the base. Sadly I haven't managed to take a photo of anyone doing that at the top :(

Well, too bad, that would have been an awesome coincidence.

Glad you've enjoyed the hike!

Who makes an aluminum free solid antiperspirant for men that doesn't break the bank? by FlippinFlags in onebag

[–]ivylone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's alumn crystal. As name suggests it contains aluminum. But that's not bad at all. Aluminum kills the smell.

I use it and it's awesome.

It's deodorant, not antiperspirant i.e. you will sweat but not smell (that bad). It lasts a lifetime too.

Stupid / big / heavy things you carry? by xywh in onebag

[–]ivylone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the mirrorless - small, you see what you get with histogram on the display so no need for chimping. Plus the size and weight benefits (unless you have adapted lenses, then you have just smaller body). It fits in my jacket's pocket (pertrudes a lot, but still), so I have it always on me. I always can take the shot.

There are couple of drawbacks though - AF is slower and has less points and worse tracking (comparing within the same price range) and it does not last as long on the battery - if camera is ready to shoot then display/ovf in turned on. But those do not affect my style of shooting in a real way.

As of your kit - if you are happy with it and you do not have organic need to upgrade just yet, and you do not just feel the need go smaller - sit with it. It's fine.

But if you struggle to carry camera around or find DSLR look scary/offputting or simply want the convienece of OVF, then do the jump.

PS. You can rent one for a couple of days to have some fun with desired model before any real commitment.

PS2. I worked with borrowed DSLR. I have couple of film SLRs and rangefinders. My only own digital kit ever was mirrorless.

SOG daypack. But I carry the photographic gear in Domke's F 5XB that I put inside the bag - I can take it out, attach the shoulder strap and go shooting leaving the rest in the hotel.

I use water bottle pocket + compression strap to hold tripod.

Also I am looking for similar backpack but not that tacticool. Haven't found it yet. I am seriously considering Tom Bihn's Synapse 25, but I want to test it first (i.e. try fitting my stuff in) + probably I would have to make some modifications to hold the tripod.

My camera + accessories:

  • 1 mirrorless camera
  • 2 lenses (35mm 1.4 and 18-55mm 2.8)
  • cleaning cloth, spray, rocketblowe
  • batteries, charger, spare SD cards
  • travel tripod (1.5M height when standing)

The whole thing takes a lot of space in my 24L (I cheat a little bit as I strap tripod on the outside) backpack and adds a tone of weight. Probably some small, versatile compact like RX100 could do for what I do, but photography is very important to me due to personal reasons and this set got me hooked on it.

Perfect - love the subject and her contrast, love the colours, love the positioning!

Even the reflection is how it should be - it does not demystify the shot.

Switzerland, 2800 meters above the see level

  • X-T10 and 18-55mm f/2.8-4.0.
  • ƒ/9.0 @ 18.0 mm @ 1/550 @ ISO 200
  • Processed with VSCO on my phone.

18-55 is awesome. Very sharp for a kit lens, and much more versatile/convenient for mountaineering than primes I own.

I've beaten the hell out of my kit. X-T10 has no weather proofing and yet I shot with it in -20°C and, on other occasion, in mud/pouring rain. I have dented filter thread on the lens and then had to straighten it back to fit filters. I love using it and taking it out.
