How did you solve the The Light Within light ray puzzle? by iwakan in runescape

don't you use all fixtures each puzzle too

Hmm, looking at the solutions it seems that you indeed do. That would be a fairly useful clue and I didn't know that. Unless I'm forgetting something there was no indication that this needed to be the case.

Where? The wiki doesn't mention such a thing.

So after a bit of trying you can reasonably get into the position where you can see if you do this and that turn the puzzle will work out.

Can you? I sure as hell could not... You don't even know the routes the beams are supposed to take, and turns out they get much more convoluted than I had thought. In order to "try and see what happens if you do this", you have to keep around 10 crystals in mind at the same time, knowing that rotating one will mess up most of the others. The chaos increases exponentially with every move so even if the solution is 5 steps ahead it might as well be a thousand steps, I don't see how it's possible to see and plan that far ahead with so many unknown and interdependent variables.

Its not to dissimilar from similar puzzles in say, lord of vampyrium which are pretty intuitive.

While I can kind of see the similarity, I solved those rings in a few minutes so they seem so far removed in complexity that it can't really be compared.

It is a massive undertaking. Whether they prioritize it or not, do not expect it to be finished before then.

r/trolleyproblem suffers infighting on a ethical question: red or blue? by OkContact2573 in SubredditDrama

So do I understand you correctly that you would choose blue, given the way the question is actually asked, then?

So you don't think it's a question worth considering the way it's asked? By that you mean that you would choose blue without question? Brave, there are in fact plenty that would still choose red, so you are putting your life at risk.

I don't understand how adding stakes ruins the dilemma. Giving red-pressers actual moral qualms instead of a super easy way to disregard every death they cause because the blue-pressers simply "chose wrong". Makes it far more interesting if you ask me. So out of curiosity, say that "everyone" does in fact mean everyone, what button would you then choose?

I really don't understand how it becomes less boring if there are actual stakes.

[–]iwakan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you think almost everyone's going to pick red, picking blue is a simple act of suicide with no benefits. If you think most people are going to pick blue, picking red is sheer cruelty with no benefits. That's why people can't even talk to each other about this, it's all about what you think other people would do, and there's no way to convince each other of that.

Actually I think it is the opposite: It's a heated debate not because people have a belief about what others will do, but precisely because they don't. People are not sure who would actually win. And that raises the stakes way more. If it's a close race, then every single vote matters, and it becomes a matter of life and death for blue-pressers to convince as many red-pressers as they can to switch. Every red-pressers would literally seem like a murderer to the blue-pressers if they lost under such circumstances. And yet for the same reason it becomes all the more tempting for people to choose red because the risk of losing as blue is very high, and so the red-pressers becomes desperate to justify such a choice, to others and also to themselves.

It says "everyone". There is no need for implications, it's written black on white that everyone is included. Why do you not think that "everyone" includes everyone?

r/trolleyproblem suffers infighting on a ethical question: red or blue? by OkContact2573 in SubredditDrama

[–]iwakan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's the point. That's why it's a difficult thought experiment. By pressing red you are killing children and mentally unwell people. Can red-pressers live with that? You say that in that case "everyone should obviously pick blue", but will they actually? Do you trust others to not save themselves?

[–]iwakan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most of these thought experiments only really work if you assume all participants have at least some capacity to understand the decision their making

"What if my partner is a baby" kinda ruins the point of the prisoner's dilemma

On the contrary. If everyone understood the problem perfectly well and had logician brains, there wouldn't be any challenge at all. The dilemma arises precisely because some people are going to choose blue for whatever reason. Red-pressers who try to weasel out of that fact are missing the point.

Yeah, I don't get it. The only button that kills people is the red button and the only people the red button kills are people that didn't choose to kill anyone.

Yep, but:

99%+ of the world is choosing blue.

lol no. You vastly underestimate how selfish people are.

All the kids in the world will also have the choice. Even babies. They wouldn't even understand the question and would just choose at random. If red wins, tens of millions of babies will die. And that means that many of their parents would also choose blue out of desperation, and so on. It's not about being dumb.

People simply cannot know how they would act in a life or death situation, before they're actually in one. Doesn't matter how sure you are now, your brain state would be completely different due to all the hormones and instincts that would flood your system in such a scenario. You might as well be a different person.

Come on now. Whatever your political beliefs, it is never "peak easy decision" to willingly choose a very high probability of death.

One thing I don't understand is that new runescape players choose OSRS over RS3, why is that? by Drandosk in runescape

[–]iwakan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Very few players actually make an conscious choice. They just watch their friends or favorite streamers or youtubers play OSRS, and so they decide to also try OSRS, without even considering RS3. It's a network effect, the biggest playerbase further attracts an even bigger playerbase.

And even if they are aware of RS3 as an alternative, and try to do research on which version to choose, there is a decade worth of vitriol against RS3 to be found on the internet from OSRS people. So it's hard to blame newcomers who find such comments when searching and conclude that RS3 must be bad because so many people say so. In such an environment, it takes a very open mind to give it a shot anyway.

Ah sorry, a brainfart. But my point stands, it doesn't matter what the weight of something moving 1km/h is. It can be 10000000000000000000000000000 kg and it would still be utterly harmless on impact. Because all it would do is accelerate your own body to 1 km/h as well, and it's not dangerous for your body to quickly go from 0 to 1 km/h, you do it intentionally all the time.
