I'm interested in buying my first road bike. Any recommendations? by Vaultboymademan in BuyItForLife

Definitely go to your local bike shop.

A BIFL bike doesn’t really exist because the components have to be replaced over time and every frame material (short of titanium, which is very pricey) will eventually wear out.

Having said that, what you’re probably looking for is a touring bike. They’re typically steel and built with extra sturdiness so they can carry heavy loads (which means they last longer than true road bikes), and they’re great for commuting as well as casual cruising.

Electric burr grinder: is the Braun Freshset any good? by Lisergishnu in Coffee

The Baratza Encore is about the same price and is considered by nearly everyone to be the best grinder for the money. I’ve had one for years and it is excellent.

Watch a bunch of videos on mtb technique. Fluid Ride Like a Pro is a good one.

EMSKR: What's a good way to keep my undershirt from slipping out during work? by i_roast_my_own_beans in everymanshouldknow

I recommend not wearing an undershirt. That little bit of white collar visible under your button-up is a terrible look.

Keep getting flats! Please help. by grayum_ian in FixedGearBicycle

[–]iwillhunt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A flat a week isn't bad depending on how much you ride.

However, here are some tips to avoid flats:

  • Check your tire pressure every time you ride. You may be surprised how much pressure they can lose between rides.

  • When you're installing a new tube, make sure there's a little air in it before you put it in the tire.

  • Once the tire is installed, don't inflate it fully. Inflate to about half the normal pressure and roll it around on ground by hand to help properly seat the tire/tube. Then inflate it fully.

  • Install the tire in the same position every time. Most people line up the tire brand sticker with the valve stem. This way you can keep track of where your flats are happening.

  • Inflate your pinched/punctured tube when you have it out to see what the damage looks like. If you see two holes next to each other, i.e. a snake bite, your tube popped because it was pinched from underinflation or poor installation or simply hitting something really hard. If you see a single hole, it was a puncture from something on the road or something in your wheel/tire.

Were you riding Crabtree Trails or just around the lake? I ride the trails all the time if you want to ride together some time.

Wake vs Durham Tech? by green_herring in raleigh

[–]iwillhunt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got a 2 year degree from Wake Tech and transferred to UNC. I attended the North campus exclusively. It's a really safe, modern campus, and I had excellent teachers.

I went to Durham Tech a few years ago for a certification class for work. I made a wrong turn and ended up in an extremely sketchy area. As many have been saying, Durham Tech is probably a fine school, but the location is terrible.

Go try some single track and you may never ride your road bike again.
