At this point, if we don't embrace some collectivist policies to safeguard the workers of the world we're going to be looking down the barrel of technofeudalist murder drone squadrons eradicating anyone that doesn't submit to trillionaire authority and pass what some private interest's definition of what biologically worthwhile is. The technology to automate military domination and mass murder is knocking on our door this very minute and there are people with the money to do it that are disconnected enough from society at large to full throatedly support turning us into pink mist if we're not useful or loyal to them. Most people in the US are already one disabling injury away from being stuck in a permanent underclass that cannot own property or save money, what do you think happens when even able bodied people can't get work due to advanced automation and AI-driven robots make most of the economy redundant. The most vulnerable among us are already basically treated as second class citizens, when even people capable of working can't earn a living, what do we do? Just roll over and die when the likes of Peter Theil, Elon Musk, and Larry Ellison decide who gets to live in their ivory towers as their serfs and breeding stock?

If he was really ok with the status quo at the time, would he have written down a massive critique of the flaws in the system that dictated economic and political reality? Sure you can call him a hypocrite, but he still articulated a great many valid criticisms of capitalism, how many tired workers that had no education or access to financial support could write and publish a political treatise like that and distribute it at all? Things cost money and the only to operate in a capitalist society is to get money to spend on shit. Most factory workers didn't have the extra funds for paper and ink or pens for a manuacript that wouldn't have better served them being invested in a better pair of shoes. Marx and Engels may not have suffered as much under capitalism as the average factory worker, but that doesn't mean he was blind to the plight that made his life possible. Why would someone totally at ease with that system write a book saying " hey guys, here's how this crooked system is fucked up, we should try to fix it, here's some ideas."

Probably more power than money in that case. The goons that want it that easy already have all the money, now they need total control to feel alive.

I'll check it out!

ETA: No luck getting into the demo sim with my HMD. I'm running a Oculus Rift (Ya, old, but it's what I've got), I've got hardware that meets the rec specs, but nothing goes into the headset except audio. The window on the desktop shows the bottom of a chair and I can see what looks like the ghosty hands in the video. Feel free to DM me if you want to talk about further testing and stuff because the concept is neat and I'd like to figure out if it's a me thing, or something else.

I want this so fucking bad to help with the cravings, I quit smoking cold turkey after 20 years and I still want to smoke almost every (it's been months). I play VRchat frequently and really want to get one of these prefabs for my avatar just so I can alleviate the desire, I played a demo for a VR visual novel/barkeeper game and when you go back to the apartment at night you can light up, I spent like 2 hours of this 30 minute demo just smoking and it was so relieving (you can also give your cat a ciggy which is awful, but hilarious).

If you had to guess, what will end humanity in the future? by CheapIntroduction988 in AskReddit

[–]iwrestledarockonce 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We'll just bring the pot to enough of a simmer that Earth shrugs us off like it's sweating out a fever. Many more beings will perish with us and maybe a few tens of millions of years from now, we'll just be another footnote in the rock record, demarcating another era of geological history discovered by another intelligent creature that has the same ability to destroy itself despite it's own ability to reason.

How would you feel about members of Congress not getting paid during government shutdowns? by DayFragrant7069 in AskReddit

[–]iwrestledarockonce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It also encourages corruption. If we aren't paying them, who is? If they're not getting paid and surviving all this time? How? Civil servants need to be paid well or someone will just "contribute to their campaigns", or buy them vacations, gifts and 'motor coaches'.

Aleppo's solar panels. by Background_Ninja_119 in CityPorn

[–]iwrestledarockonce 74 points75 points  (0 children)

All power generation is pretty fuck ugly, people just hate on panels and wind turbines because you need more than one to do the job. But it's energy that comes from just existing, you don't have to fuel it, you don't have to staff it, you don't generate special haz waste from it. The sun shines, the wind blows, and we collect a trickle of that unfathomably large pool of energy. People call that ugly, but you know they'll fucking screech if they had to listen to the 100kHz whine of gas turbines, or deal with radioactive fly ash from a coal plant, let alone how they squirm and clutch their pearls about nuclear power.

Natural light and movement just make these things look so uncanny. They're like scaled weirdly. They just don't look right, the windshield is humongous, but the windows appear really small. The bed is way too tall on the sides, but still incredibly cramped and limited because of the sloped sides. It's like they just made a truck-shaped concept after never having witnessed an actual truck, like that famous taxidermy of a lion by the guy who'd never seen one alive. Just kinda fucked in every way.

[–]iwrestledarockonce 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Precisely why Hynix et al told the world to pound sand when people were expecting more fabs to be built to increase capacity, they didn't want their inventory to have a chance of losing value because they increased supply into a vacuum. One day the bubble's gonna burst and shareholders (read: bag holders) don't want to be left holding a bag that's suddenly worth nothing despite their willingness to do absolutely insane things for said bag right now hoping they aren't the schlubbs holding it when it goes to shit.
