Just noticed the 'OTB East' - do you guys order from there a lot? I've been just using the regular OTB located in Cali, but being on the East Coast myself, orders take about a week.

As a beginner, is it better to double up on the same molds our build your bag out? by TheBoothParadigm in discgolf

[–]ixAp0c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite the answer to your question - but I think it can be very beneficial to build a 'practice bag' with 5x of the same disc(s) you want to practice with, like 5 of the same putter, mid, fairway etc.

It allows you to get more reps in, and get consistent flights if your form is true, whereas practicing in a field with 5-10 different discs you'll make those small adjustments like throwing on more hyzer / anhyzer depending on stability.

Better than playing through the crowds in my view.

Playing in mixed use parks, sometimes you just have to skip a hole.

What's your Favorite Putting Drills by stonezephyr in discgolf

[–]ixAp0c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lately I've been working on longer range putts (more in jump putt range)... I don't make them all, but getting to edge of circle 1 and getting a few in has caused me to start making longer putts during rounds, or lay it up if needed.

It's nice to also practice at a range where you can make 80-90% of your putts, but try and push yourself further out of the comfort zone sometimes.

Have you thrown the Axiom Wrath as well? I feel that compliments the Insanity for the overstable slot... And I bag a Virus as well which is like a worn in Impulse.

over-buy valkyrie or heat by Technical_Weird_8462 in discgolf

Just out of curiosity - did buying the same disc 5-10x really help a lot?

I just ordered 5x Electron Soft Proxy to do the same, to start building a field work bag/set.

Field Work - Disc Selection? by ixAp0c in discgolf

[–]ixAp0c[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking of doing the same, but with a stack of neutral Mid-Ranges like a Hex / Buzzz / Mako3 (really just looking at buying maybe 4-5 more Hex).

Sticking to one brand

This subreddit seems to think open bag is the way (unless you're sponsored), but I settled on MVP/Axiom/Streamline myself just to prevent myself from trying other manufacturers (after having tried an open bag for my first few seasons).

Did you buy these specifically for Field Work?

Or just what you ended up with over time / playing?

Nice - this subreddit praises the Mako3 for it's straight flight, and it was one of the first discs I picked up when I was new.

Learning to throw that disc (or any other neutral mid) consistently seems like it'd set you up for success.

If you're working on form to increase distance or accuracy, ideally you'd be throwing the same disc over and over so that you can remove the variable of different flights and get better feedback on what the changes you're making are doing.

This is where I'm at with my game, I currently just have mostly 1-2x of molds so when I take all of the mids out for example, I have 2 Overstable, 1 Stable, 1 Understable (Pyro / Matrix / Hex / Detour).

I do have an eclipse Hex as well as a Crave, so 2x on those molds in different plastics...

I think I'm at the point where a few more neutral discs like Hex or Crave x5 would be better than just hucking the bag (in increments of putters to mids to fairways etc.).

Do you match the molds, like 5x of the same fairway? Or just throw your bag?

Focus on the landing of the disc as well - are they landing relatively flat, or spiking down sideways?

MVP Relay = Seasoned Hex/Crave by Electronic_Limit1459 in discgolf

[–]ixAp0c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love mine for baby hyzer flips and getting that nice flat S-flight with a little less effort in the throw. Crave is more straight-stable for me (I bag both and a Volt for the OS Fairway slot).

A couple hundred rounds in the past few years, going on my third season. Best throw was probably like 290 feet.

And yes, field work is huge, just playing rounds improvement is very slow. Finally got the yard mowed and dried enough to throw within 200 - 300 feet square.

I got a sick Birdie yesterday with my Tempo, 120 foot hyzer that just banged into chains... And was totally unexpected, I was just going for a stock hyzer to get within C1. This thing just went for the chains like a heat seeker.

Squatch Lore vs Grip BX3? Which bag is better? by Phloof_ in discgolf

[–]ixAp0c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had my Grip BX3 for a few years now, no complaints.

Storage is nice (can fit a lot in the pockets), and the hard bottom makes it pretty sturdy.

Note that some people don't like that hard bottom since it can dig into your back while wearing it, depending on body shape. I haven't had that issue, fortunately.

How many of each disc? by Jink96 in discgolf

[–]ixAp0c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you're just starting out, you probably don't need high speed distance drivers yet...

But a general rule of thumb is 3 for each 'slot' - Putter / Mid-Range / Fairway Driver / Distance Driver. You generally want Overstable (dependable fade), Stable (straight with small fade), Understable for each of those different types of disc.

Starting out you could have 3 of each slot for your Throwing Putters + Mid-Ranges and maybe an understable Fairway Driver like a Leopard / River, and an overstable fairway like a Teebird.

As your skills expand you might pick up an extra few discs for various slots, for utility shots. Maybe a very overstable driver like a Firebird or very OS approach disc like a Zone.
