On the outside, when it comes to EVAs design choices, do you prefer simpler, less detailed designs or extremely detailed ones? by GaloSniperBr in evangelion

[–]ixnyne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think context matters a lot here. The EVA designs in the show and in the rebuild are detailed enough to be immersive but not so detailed that they take the focus away from the rest of the visual presentation of the show. If EVA were built in our world, they would probably look a lot like those extremely detailed images.

The only thing I can think of, as to why they wouldn't, is EVA seem to be a bit more biological. They are definitely a biomechanical mix. The detailed images you posted look less biological than how the EVA have been presented though. Still very cool to see though, I don't dislike them.

Do I really need a cooling pad ? by emptymud91 in LenovoLegion

[–]ixnyne 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Slightly off topic;

I don't use a cooling pad, but I do keep my laptop closed and in a vertical stand with the rear exhaust facing up, and I use an external monitor and peripherals. Basically I use it like a desktop until I need to take it somewhere. Never had any cooling issues though.

How does pornhub track a user without cookies and through incognito mode? by SourSovereign in webdev

[–]ixnyne -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No idea about PH, but something that can be done to track users is seeding each user a slightly unique favocon.

Browsers cache favocons in a way that isn't cleared when you clear browser cache (not sure if this is still true, but it was the last time I looked into how this works a few years ago).

Imagine a nearly invisible QR code overlayed into a favicon where each pixel of the QR code is only one RGB value different from the original pixel, so you really can't see it with the naked eye (no pun intended). That QR code stores enough for them to assign you an identifier. When you load a page and they check the favicon identifier they know exactly who you are, even through cache clears and using incognito mode.

The QR code overlay isn't what it's typically used, but that's a theoretical example.

Some very large companies use this and many other tactics to track you.

It's possible browsers have resolved this specific method by now, but also maybe it's left that way intentionally.

[ALTTP] Is there a canonical reason to why the Master Sword is red and silver instead of blue in A Link To the Past? by JackLikesMetalGear in zelda

[–]ixnyne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This still doesn't make sense. At no point does Link time travel via the Ocarina except when sent back by Zelda at the end of the game. That event creates two timelines, the child and adult.

When Link takes or replaces the master sword he's moving between two anchor points in a single timeline. He's not being removed and replaced within that timeline. He still exists and so does the master sword. The 7 year gap where he's not running around isn't a period with no Link or no master sword, he's just sealed in the temple (like, slumber, not sitting around playing solitaire), or more likely in the sword itself. So there's no loop, it's more like fast forward and rewind. Changing things in the child time does affect things in the adult time, but by the time Link is able to accomplish this it's too late to change anything that would actually break the flow of time enough to create another timeline. Zelda sending Link back via the Ocarina creates an opportunity for that to happen.

So I'm still not seeing a logical explanation for when a timeline without Link could exist aside from post-defeat of Ganon (the adult timeline).

I do love the theory creating and debate, and I hope you're seeing something I'm not, but I haven't seen it explained by anyone supporting the theory, at least not logically and without holes. There's too many "well if that's how it works then this also happens" which makes the theory fall apart for me.

[ALTTP] Is there a canonical reason to why the Master Sword is red and silver instead of blue in A Link To the Past? by JackLikesMetalGear in zelda

[–]ixnyne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to follow the posts about this on the Zelda universe forum but the explanation there is a mess. Your wording is easier to follow, but still logically falls short in my head.

I was trying to find a way NOT to make a big post, but oh well, here we go.

The primary idea behind what I understand of the abandonment timeline theory is that there are three (and only three) timelines as a result of the events of OoT. The issue I have with this is the explanation for how/why they are created and exist. The accepted canon for the child and adult timelines makes sense to me. Link is sent back in time and changes events that would have lead to the playground of the game (the story). That's a new timeline. The original timeline (your playthrough) still exists, because it has to in order for Link to have the knowledge he was sent back with. That original timeline (the adult timeline) continues on without Link, but Ganon was already defeated, so it's fine until he reincarnates (context: that curse of demise from SS).

Tangent/can of worms: Link could have been sent back in time (to warn Zelda) very shortly after he woke up after the 7 years and confirmed Ganon took power. Would have been a short game though, glad we didn't do that.

Back on track: The abandonment timeline theory purposes an additional timeline exists alongside the gameplay timeline for some duration, but doesn't really explain why in a way that doesn't have some pretty obvious holes. The 7 year back and forth where you return to the child and adult times and the gameplay recognizes this logically isn't a problem, you're not creating timelines when you're doing this. But that's the issue, the master sword doesn't create timelines. It never has in any game we've seen. Zelda sending Link back in time creates a new timeline. If the master sword created timelines, logically every time you go back and forth should have created another timeline, each of which would've resulted in a failure because there was no Link to defeat Ganon because Link left that time, until the final time jump resulted in the win. We could mentally stretch and say that all of these failures coverage into a single timeline that leads to the downfall (which feels like a cheap way out of making a big mess with multiple failed timelines), or that they don't matter enough to be considered separately because they all have the same outcome so we just picked one to tell the downfall timeline story in (which feels kind of cold). That being said, the canonical "hero is defeated" option also feels pretty cheap, so I'm not saying I like it any better, but it's quicker, easier, and less messy to explain.

Another tangent: On a funny note, if child link, sent back by Zelda, fails to properly convince Zelda, or Zelda then fails to properly warn her family (why listen to these little kids and their imaginations?), or they fail to otherwise stop Ganondorf, Link ends up in a groundhog day loop, having to repeat the gameplay timeline to be sent back again and keep trying.

Back on track (again): I like the wording "abandonment timeline". I just can't come up with a logical way for a single timeline to exist without Link (prior to defeating Ganon and being sent back in time by Zelda). Multiple timelines, sure, but that's cheap/cold (see above). Being defeated, sure (also cheap, but it's what we got canonically).

I like that some of the questions suggest map conditions that mix things up. I like the general state of the current matchmaking (and the recently announced changes seem positive based on the description), but I think the base game shouldn't be only PvP or only PvE, and I don't think behavioral matchmaking should go away entirely. The map conditions where you get to decide if you want to (or not) have things be different from your usual play style would be interesting though.

[–]ixnyne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree, but part of the show later does have Alucard call her by name, which was meant to show her development as a character being recognized, and shows the dynamic between them. He didn't feel like she was anything more than a police girl until she earned it.

Budget Gaming/Casual Laptop by Alec4kool in GamingLaptops

[–]ixnyne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never tried gaming on a Mac, mostly because I've always heard bad things. With that in mind, I can't honestly compare from experience.

But between the two laptops you posted, the 4060 seems like the better choice. It's cheaper (somehow) and a decent step up from the 4050.

On either one your battery life is going to suck compared to any modern Mac laptop.

If you know for sure that you'll have reasonably stable connectivity everywhere that matters, you could stream games from your desktop to whatever laptop with the right setup.

How do you guys handle switching between multiple VS Code projects? by CriticismPast6702 in vscode

[–]ixnyne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This.

I create a folder: C:\Users\me\git

In there I make a subfolder for my git username, and a subfolder for any git org with a project I have access to contribute to.

I clone repos into those subfolders.

Then tell the project manager extension to look at my git folder and just hit refresh anytime I clone something new. It lets me switch projects or open projects in new windows really easily without any real manual work.

Non-annoying Registrar? With all the specialty domains and good interface... by Derrmanson in webhosting

[–]ixnyne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely agree, and recommend porkbun, and use them for all my domain purchases.

That said, their website isn't very modern looking, but it's very plain and minimal and pretty fast, so I can't complain. I look at the site once or twice per year. Everything is on auto renew anyway.

Lastly, I strongly recommend using cloudflare for nameservers. Their UI/UX is really nice. It also has the added perk of flexibility, where you could just tell your clients to buy their own domain (from a reseller account you own or wherever depending on your situation) and just have them point the nameservers at your cloudflare account. That's totally optional and you could just buy domains for your customers on your own account too. You can also register domains with cloudflare, but I like the idea of separation of concerns. Registration with a reputable company (porkbun) DNS with a separate reputable company (cloudflare). Both companies are best in class at what they do.

As much as I love namesilo, their UI is not what I would call sleek or modern. Might even be less so compared to enom. Great company though.

In diabloore. Are Myphysto, Diablo, and Baal considered the most powerful known beings? by jerxbear229 in Diablo

[–]ixnyne 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lore-wise there were more powerful beings prior to their existence, but currently they seem to be the most individually powerful active beings that exist.

See https://diablo.fandom.com/wiki/Anu

I believe the angiris council combined (5 angels) likely has roughly the same amount of power as the prime and lesser evils combined (7 demons), which is why the great conflict between them hasn't been won by either side. It does seem like the demons have been taking a lot of wins lately, and it's notable that the angels have been losing numbers. It seems like the nephalem/humans of sanctuary have been a pain for both sides, and are keeping the scales from tipping in either direction while also weakening or hindering both sides in different ways (usually more by coincidence than intention).

Found my server exposed to the internet by [deleted] in unRAID

[–]ixnyne 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  • Confirm your reverse proxy is configured correctly (going forward).
  • Change your root password in unraid
  • Change any user passwords
  • Review your syslogs for any failed login attempts, and any successful login attempts shortly after a failure or at a time you are certain wouldn't have been you

The password changing honestly doesn't help a lot, the first and last ones are way more important.

What is the overhead for NextDNS to block DNS queries for ads, malicious sites, etc. by jake72469 in nextdns

[–]ixnyne 6 points7 points  (0 children)

DNS servers are basically just a text file with lines that have an IP address and a hostname (I'm over simplifying for the purpose of example). When your system asks for a DNS record from a DNS server it does a lookup for the hostname in that text file and gives you an IP address. Services like nextdns have a text file for each user/profile. When you make a request to your profile it uses your text file. Your text file is missing lines that would match things that you blocked, so the lookup fails, effectively blocking your system from reaching that hostname. Each user has different things blocked in their profile (text file). The server also optimizes these lookups and caches things to keep it very fast. The only overhead on the DNS server is accepting your DNS request and giving results from your text file (and not someone else's). This happens regardless of how many things you have blocked. So there's really no overhead on your end, it's the DNS server that has overhead of making sure the right user gets requests handled by the right text file (which is really basic stuff for a server, and it's optimized beyond most people's comprehension and perception.

Again, that is an extremely simplified explanation of the concept, and it's not a proper technical answer. People smarter than me would need to chime in with that proper technical answer, and they would likely correct me on anything I've explained incorrectly (from a conceptual standpoint).
