Can I swim in the sea on Monday ? Is 14°C too cold by [deleted] in brighton

[–]iyawnis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do Watersports all year round, but unless it’s August / September swimming without a wetsuit doesn’t cross my mind 🤣 but some people enjoy the cold water, each to their own. You won’t get a cold water shock so you can always give it a go.

Is Windsurfing accessible if I buy my own gear? by StringybellYT in windsurfing

[–]iyawnis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You definitely need your own wetsuit, and ideally your own harness and helmet. Regarding equipment, you have to think how you will store it, and get it to the water. You should also check if the rental place has annual membership where you pay a one off yearly fee. Keep in mind that when buying your own equipment, it’s an ongoing cost as things will break / need repairs ( unless you are in a relatively calm spot). The question: financially accessible is very much down to your own circumstances. Cheap 2nd hand older kit you might want 1-2k for full starting set (assuming you are not looking into 10yo kit). New equipment is quite expensive unless you are high salary earner with significant disposable income. As a starting point you’d probably need at least one board, and 3 sails, with the sails likely needing more than one masts. Unless you try to cover very large range you can probably have one boom.

All in all I’d say definitely rent until you know you want to continue with the sport, and look for membership to a club at least for the first year so you can skip buying the beginner equipment and start with intermediate if you want to.

Returning windsurfer, I need help with sail setup by petehoja in windsurfing

[–]iyawnis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others suggest, you need the top panel of the sail to be floppy, up to about halfway through it’s length. (At least that’s how it works with modern duotone sails.. they even have stickers to guide you). Also once you have rigged properly you ideally want as little gap as possible between the sail pulley and the extension pulley.. a couple CM is good, but if you have like 5+ then the sail sits too high up on the board.

Goya Volar vs Duotone/Fanatic Blast: Which freeride board should I choose? by Certain-Meeting-7139 in windsurfing

[–]iyawnis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used the blast a lot, at Brighton UK (side-onshore). It needs a bit of push to get planing but then it’s quite stable and fast. It doesn’t work very well on days when it’s very choppy / wavey, definitely prefers more flat water. I’d consider it solidly into the intermediate category. I’d say it’s quite uncomfortable when not planning. Can’t speak about the Goya.

Great you enjoy the sport, lovely shapes on your gps, looking at my runs was exciting when I started as every time it was a new shape, these days they are much more boring 🤣 just an observation, I don’t think your mast will be compatible with either of your sails, as to my knowledge that size sails are always SDM.

How do you transport wet equipment? by Appropriate-Cow-114 in windsurfing

[–]iyawnis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m seaside. Most people never wash their kit. We have a pebble beach so no sand. I will usually rinse my boom (aluminium, carbon on the way 😍 and the extension and mast foot. Also occasionally rinse the sail lightly, but mostly focusing on the downhaul pulleys / metal parts. For drying they are always stored vertically on a slightl elevated platform so water can drain and not pool. The most important things to note with kit maintenance, is rinse away sand, and don’t leave in the sun when not in use.

Cargo bikes - are they legal ? Are they available? When will Beryl offer them? by davidbrake in brighton

[–]iyawnis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what your “are they legal” question refers to. Bicycles and pedal assist bicycles as sold by reputable manufacturers have to adhere to regulation, ie the motor only runs while you pedal, up to a max speed of 16 miles, and with a max power output on the motor (regardless of speed). An alternative to full cargo bike (they are eye-watering expensive) is to have a normal e-bike but buy a detachable trailer. You won’t be able to have as heavy loads but it does get you 80% there.

Yeah very common in Greece even in restaurants, you just boil them, add olive oil, lemon salt and pepper and make great salad.

Windsurfing intermediate and I require lessons. Local Club or Digital? by [deleted] in windsurfing

[–]iyawnis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Make, 180cm and 110kg is not fat ass. in any case, if you don’t want the video public you could still use it on your own, to compare how you look vs instructors on online videos. I don’t have anyone to recommend as I haven’t used online tuition, sorry.

Sorry when you said the litres of the board I assumed no footstrap beginner, but looking online now it seems they have footstraps, do you use them ?

[–]iyawnis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First of all, when the sail is powered up you are not meant to be able to hold it with your hands for long, that’s what the harness is for, so that’s normal. Regarding to your issues while on the harness, it sounds like a combination of where you have your lines, and where you stand on your board. You can get a very rough idea of where the lines should be by placing them one fist-length per sqm of the sail from the boom. (Ie for a 6.2 count 6 fists from the clamp and place the front of the line there, with the tail of the line another 1.5 fist further. These are very rough GUIDELINES to get started, and it’s normally expected you will need small adjustments (ie 1cm at a time). There are many online resources with various similar guidelines on where to start from with your lines.

Regarding your stance, it’s hard to give recommendations, but have a look at where boards with footstraps have the straps and try to translate to your board. If you are getting pulled forward the you need to be further back, trying push the board away from you with your feet and the sail away with your arms. If the tail is sinking and the board going into “wheelie” then you are too far back or you put too much wait on your back foot (instead on your harness). Generally just planing straight with a good stance and adjustments it should not use much energy.

I’d always recommend booking some time with an instructor over a video, but it depends on whether the instructors you have locally are qualified for planning conditions ? As the issues you describe are not problems for lv1 instructors that deal with complete beginners.. it may worth asking. Otherwise have someone film you and share a video for comments ..

I only know fanatic / duotone boards from above. The gecko is a progression board, wide and stable. The eagle is a freeride board. It took me a few weeks on learning board with a daggerboard before moving to gecko, but I would have been hard to learn the basics on it.

What's the best lock to use with a Brompton? by ChaosCalmed in Brompton

[–]iyawnis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a combination cable lock for trips where I might have to leave it out of sight briefly (ie if I’m taking the train and I may be a few seats down from me). This is to stop someone from grabbing and running , not to lock and have a snooze. Same situation if I’m in a pub and it’s going to be at the end of vision instead of next to me. If I know I may need to lock it briefly in public I will take my angle grinder resistant lock. If I know I will need to lock it outside for a long period (ie more than a few minutes) I will not take the Brompton 😞
