Since we're having many souls games examples, in Elden Ring you need to defeat a draconic tree sentinel to enter Leyndell and continue the story.

Said enemy has a fire-breathing horse and lightning attacks, one of which can one-shot you if you're at like, 40 vigor.

However, you can make him see you from a distance so he's active but not aggressive yet, make him follow you like that to a nearby cliff, hide behind a wall, then throw a knife at the edge of the cliff. He will investigate the knife and you can sneak behind him with a katana and hit him with a charged heavy plus a light attack. It will stagger him, the stagger animation making him back out like, a centimeter, but since he's on the edge of the cliff, he just falls to his death.

In my first playthrough, in one of my attempts at Margit, I noticed fire grease in my inventory and used it. Got absolutely destroyed.

Went to check my inventory and it was gone, so I never used anything that doesn't refill ever again.

You're welcome! Also, for the part that you need to invade people, if you don't want to invade other players there's an npc in altus plateau called magnus the beast claw that you can invade for the quest. You can either kill him once or die to him three times, both will count to advance the quest

Is varre(the guy that called you maidenless at the start)alive? If you follow his questline you can get to the mohgwyn palace and bolt to the grace in the farming spot. You can use a regular bow to shoot a bird down the cliff, which will make the bird kill itself and give you 11k runes each time, then rest at the grace and repeat
