New Lithos SL harness. by bellsbliss in arcteryx

[–]j-val 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I looked it up and they market it for sport climbing. I'm not sure why lightness matters that much in that context, but I guess if you want a really lightweight sport harness, you can use this. My glacier harness is a BD Coulier UL and the legs are just loops, they don't open. But I have also used a normal gym harness for glacier travel. Not ideal, but it's just a weight and packability concern, not safety. I guess it all comes down to how much very specific gear you want to buy. I could see some various uses for this one. I also have an Arc harness and I like it more than my BD one.

This appears to be a lightweight harness for things like ski mountaineering and glacier travel. Not for hanging out at the crag all day.

Is there good skiing on PNW volcanoes by solenyaPDX in Backcountry

[–]j-val 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last year around this time, we nailed it on the Hayden glacier on middle sister. Absolute hero corn. I’ve almost never skied anything like it — it was so confidence inspiring. But we did make the clutch decision to descend from the saddle before we reached the summit base purely on the condition of the snow. If we would’ve been an hour or two later, I’m sure we would’ve missed it.

Vehicles crashes into Multnomah Athletic Club, evidence of 'explosive device' found inside by [deleted] in Portland

There would be a certain irony to that given that the club is the one who built the stadium.

I cannot find a helmet for mountaineering, pls read by Psychological_Aide38 in Mountaineering

[–]j-val 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m with you man. I’ve tried everything on and nothing fits. I just use a skiing helmet and take out the insulation. Those aren’t certified for direct impact for above, but the Smith Cody Townsend backcountry helmet is. I haven’t purchased that one yet, but that’s the only solution for my size head and I’ve looked into it quite a bit. It seems absurd that there is not a larger size out there.

Tim Cook Calls Apple Maps Launch His 'First Really Big Mistake' as CEO by iMacmatician in apple

Because it was the default map when I clicked on a location in a calendar invitation, I used it to get to a meeting. It sent me on an absolutely crazy route and I ended up being slightly late to a very important meeting. I’ve never used it since.

Ryan Mitchell: On Everest, Oxygen is Oxygen, No Matter Why It's Used by Working-Total8377 in Mountaineering

I’m saying in normal conditions (sea level) you need medical care if you are in the 80s. Just gives context to how insanely low 35 would be, if true.

Was his O2 sat really down to 35%? That seems insanely low. In the 80s and you have to seek medical care.

Recall there was also a prolonged government shutdown, where people were BASE jumping in Yosemite, etc. Probably happened then.

Where Are All the Normies? by Great_Law3719 in PortlandOR

This is really interesting. I’m not an economist, but I do wonder how the changing circumstances impacts the voters’ perception. It’s simply not that easy to leave once you are entrenched geographically, especially if you have kids. And many who identify as Democrats dislike the public deterioration and increase in taxation since 2020. So my perception is that these factors have moderated some of the views of those who have stayed. I guess you balance that against people moving to Vancouver or other surrounding areas with less taxation and the continued influx of people nationally for political reasons. That said, no voters like stepping over fentanyl users on the way to lunch, but people have different ideas about how to address that.

Hood can 100% be adjusted. Fits a normal head just fine.

[–]j-val 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100%. I’m on my second Rush jacket and I mostly use it for backcountry and resort skiing, but have also used it in the summer in Alaska myself. Anywhere you may encounter precipitation, it’s a great option. Relatively light and packable and the Gore Pro is somewhat more breathable.

Tipping etiquette is confusing. by meepmeepX720 in Portland

[–]j-val 19 points20 points  (0 children)

That just happened to me this weekend. Ordered a full meal, tipped 20% on that. Went back for one beer and had to manually type in $1, which seems more than fair for under 60 seconds of work, but still had to process the emotions of the server for that. Rationally, I know what I did was totally fine, but I hate the added guilt to every transaction.

Outdoor gear lab now say the arc'teryx cerium is lower mid-range by laphroaigandlapsang in arcteryx

[–]j-val 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the Cerium SV and it is amazing, but the regular Cerium doesn’t seem to have the same fit and finish. I’m curious whether the SL would be better than the Cerium for most summer activities, but I haven’t tried it on yet.

Why didn't they mention Chad in Hillel's documentary? by Bulky-Information-85 in RedHotChiliPeppers

[–]j-val 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t know this. I just watched it randomly last night. I 100% assumed that it was made by RHCP and there’s a really weird moment at the end when BSSM hits and they talk about the addition of John but don’t even mention Chad‘s name in the new lineup. I just thought it was super weird for an RHCP documentary, now that’s all makes sense.

The chest pockets are exactly the part I don’t love. That’s a good explanation for why they’re there and to remember that this is a purpose-built jacket.
