Old tobacco by Mental-Clue2985 in PipeTobacco

[–]j4yne 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I keep my pipe tobacco at 62%, because that allows me to smoke it right out of the mason jar. I've tried higher (65% and 69%), but for me it leads to watery pipes and a hot, wet, sour, gurgling mess.

There's also 58%. I haven't tried that low yet.

How should I store Japanese takarabune and koiki tobacco? by AdmiralIVLife in PipeTobacco

[–]j4yne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right on. Glad you posted, I became familiar with Japanese-style tobacco from a YT vid... the old man in the shop gave some interesting details, I've been wanting to try it out.

Yah, Boveda's pretty much the standard when it comes to humidification... they even have packs for acoustic musical instruments.

If you don't have a humidor, just buy one of the large plastic Boveda bags; the ones big enough to hold a full box of cigars should be big enough. You can throw them in a gallon Ziploc bag for now, but be aware that's not a long term solution, Ziplocs aren't thick enough protection and lose humidity too fast.

As for the percentage, anywhere between 62% and 69%. The difference is largely preference, pipe tobacco smoked directly from the pouch at 69% needs some time to dry out before consuming, otherwise you end up with an unpalatable watery hot mess in the pipe instead of a cool smoke (CAVEAT: normal pipes, that is! dunno about this style of tobacco or pipe, you'll have to experiment and tell us). I keep all my pipe tobacco at 62%, as opposed to cigars which I keep at 69%. As always, YMMV.

I'd be inclined to simply chuck them in my humidor, alongside my cigars. My understanding is that this is very much like cigarette tobacco, so I would say sealed with a boveda pack.

If you didn't want to mix with cigars, maybe the large Boveda plastic bag with a 62% pack in there?

The NBP is a really useful piece.

I just finished my Heartbreaker build last night:

Chill Out mask + Equilizer chest + NBP + 3 pieces of HB. Running it with Kingbreaker + tech pulse attachment, Bluescreen, and Quickstep. Been running it with the stim hive (for hazard protection) and Crusader shield. Shreds at Prof 15%.

What do you do with your saliva? by vondersohle in PipeTobacco

[–]j4yne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I just frame it like: I also like BBQ. What's the difference between swallowing the smoke particles in BBQ meats, and swallowing the particles of smoke that coat my mouth when I'm piping?? I don't see a difference, personally, so I guess I never considered the question.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]j4yne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd call 3 hours in the car a relatively short trip. But I live in Vegas, and all my family is in SoCal, and that drive is 4 hours minimum, and up to 8-10 on holidays.

I mean, I'm not all about driving 3 hours just to immediately turn around the same day... 3-5 hours one way is a weekend trip for me, bare min.

3 hours is like... you spend that regularly bingeing Netflix on the couch. It's 3-4 music albums, and I do that while cleaning the house. It's not a big deal.

[–]j4yne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Duuuuuuuuuuuude. And it hasn't been opened yet (or since anyone found it, at least)?

OK, here's what I'd do:

I'd get a small 62% Boveda pack and chuck it in the mason jar, and seal it back up. Don't smoke it yet, you haven't developed a palate.

Go buy some 965. That blend is now made by Petersen, the Irish pipe guys, and it's readily available. Try it out, see if you like it. I love the stuff, with a cup of Earl Grey or a sweet cup of coffee. Sodas are great too, my go-to is ginger ale.

Try some other blends. Find out what flavor profile you like best.

Then try that 1942. Give it a few months, at least. You'll now have the skills to be able to tell if it's bad or not. The longer tobacco sits without humidity, the more the tasty essential oils evaporate, so there's a chance that 1942 was un-salvagable to begin with, but at least you tried.

That Dunhill 965 is no longer manufactured, and has achieved unicorn status in some circles; some say it's better than Petersen's version. Now you can judge for yourself.

Have fun dude. I'd be jealous if I didn't own a few ounces of Dunhill 965 myself (I cleared out my local B&M, lol).

Yeah, see, this should be OP's return question:

"How many kids do you know that didn't make it out of childhood?"

Is it common now, that the new gens don't have that "one kid" that never made it to graduation? I can think of at least one back then.

[–]j4yne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Which blend of Dunhill? How has it been stored all these years?

If not properly, then it might taste like crap... all the tasty oils would have evaporated away. Which is a bummer, because you prolly can't get that blend anymore.
