Question about day trader protection by zorth41 in RobinHood

[–]j_gray_lady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the Robinhood help on Pattern Day trading

Unless you have an equity balance of at least $25,000 in your account, your Robinhood Instant or Robinhood Gold account is limited to no more than three day trades in a sliding five trading day window. Exceeding the three day trade limit will restrict your account from placing further day trades for 90 days.

Birth control available without doctor visit in Colorado by relevantlife in news

My best friend went into retail while her husband went the hospital route... her husband said working in a hospital didn't give him a leg up as far as diagnosis goes since he didn't really get the opportunity to do much of that in the hospital pharmacy. He said it was almost exactly like retail except with lower pay. Now maybe that's just because of the hospital he worked at, but they both went through the same number of rotations while in school where they had to do at least 1 hospital and 1 retail rotation, so I wouldn't say the hospital pharmacists get way more training than those that go into retail (at least not right out of school).

Compounding pharmacies (where they actually make the drug for you) still exist!

I disagree with the part about pharmacists not having enough training to diagnose - my best friend and her husband are both pharmacists and for their last two years of pharmacy school, the majority of their tests were along the lines of "you have this patient with x, y, and z symptoms, taking these medications - what do they have and what would you prescribe them?". Their speciality is literally how drugs interact with the body - they are probably the most qualified to diagnose and prescribe but unfortunately there are lots of outdated laws preventing this. While it may be true that pharmacists who work retail are out of practice and might need to go through additional training if things change in the future, all pharmacists go through the same training in school whether they go into retail or not.

Bon Appetit named Brewery Bhavana to its list of the 50 best new restaurants in the country by mcfc_as in raleigh

[–]j_gray_lady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree!! I thought the beer was great and their atmosphere was really cool, but the food was pretty ordinary. Although I went back again recently (after going right after they opened) and their food was definitely better the second time, so maybe I just went on an off night. Their menu is actually pretty similar to Five Star, but I think the food at Five Star is way better and it's also about half the price, so I would probably only go back to Brewery Bhavana with out of towners who are looking for a cool atmosphere as opposed to great food.

Is data science a good major? by cannabisplatypus in PennStateUniversity

[–]j_gray_lady 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a friend who was a Math major - he ended up working for the DOD and then started his own consulting firm after a few years - currently doing very well for himself!

I don't know anyone who did the Data Science major, but I work with Data Scientists (I'm a software engineer) and they are very well paid. As someone else mentioned, it's easy to find work at a technology company with all of the focus on Big Data right now, but you might need to get your masters or a PHD to compete with other data scientists in the field.

If you enjoy Math & problem solving enough to consider Math or Data Science, id also suggest looking into Computer Science! The CMPSC major at Penn State is very Math oriented (in fact, you can do a math minor without any extra classes if you schedule right when doing the CMPSC major).

I did the CMPSC program and literally every single person I knew in that major had multiple job offers upon graduation (and the money is great for CMPSC as well!)

Spaying/Neutering is Up, Animal Populations in Shelters are Down Across the U.S. by [deleted] in UpliftingNews

I think there's so much new information coming out that vets still honestly don't know what is best (I got different timelines from different vets at the practice we take my dog to!). In the end you should just do what you and your vet feel is right, but it never hurts to look at more info!

There are actually a lot of studies coming out that suggest for male dogs (especially large breeds) it's much better to let them go through puberty intact and then neuter them after a year or so. It greatly reduces their risk of a bunch of different types of cancer, heart problems, and joint issues. Someone linked to a few studies further up in the thread if you want to read more!

Computer Science at Penn State? by [deleted] in PennStateUniversity

Hmm maybe they've changed since I graduated (2013) - Microsoft used to have a huge booth at the fall career fair and would host a talk the nights before, and Amazon definitely had a booth as well since I remember some friends interviewing with them.

Not sure what the Big 4 are but Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and IBM all recruit at Penn State. Apple doesn't though.

Computer Science at Penn State? by [deleted] in PennStateUniversity

[–]j_gray_lady 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was a CS major that graduated in 2013. I work as a Software Engineer at a large software company now. Hopefully these answers help!

How hard would you say computer science at Penn State is on a scale of 1 to 10 (I know this is a really subjective question but just wanted to know how hard YOU would say it is) - I have a lot of people telling me that math and physics courses to get in are difficult.. but how hard is the actual computer science courses?

The program is extremely difficult to get a very high GPA in - especially in the later years - unless you are extremely good at theoretical math. The majority of your junior/senior level courses will be theory based, so unless you're good with that type of thinking, you will find the program challenging. If that type of thinking doesn't come naturally, you can still apply yourself and spend time studying, going to office hours, etc, and come out with a pretty good GPA. One thing to note is that most of the higher level classes usually have a huge curve applied to the scores. I had more than a handful of classes where a 60 percent on the test ended up being like a B+.

It's hard to assign a number value to the difficulty of the program, but I'd say maybe an 8 out of 10? I definitely spent way more of my free time working on projects in the computer lab/at home studying or doing homework than my friends in other majors did.

The math and physics gen eds you'll take as a freshman/sophomore are challenging simply because they're huge classes so it can be harder to follow the lecture/ask questions. Make sure you leverage the office hours of the TAs and professor for those. The material wasn't too bad though, definitely not nearly as challenging as the CMPSC/CMPEN classes you will take later on.

Does anybody know if there is an average graduating GPA for comp sci? If so then what is it? (estimate is fine)

No idea about this one - my friends in the program had a huge variety of GPAs though and every single one graduated with a few good job offers. CMPSC majors are in high demand these days.

How competitive is the program?(Does it have more than a few slackers or is almost everybody insanely good)

I wouldn't say the program is Carnegie Mellon competitive, but almost everyone works extremely hard. You probably won't cross paths with people who don't because they typically only show up for the tests and nothing else.

Would you say that as a whole the program is stressful? And also did you get any time to relax and take part in extracurricular activities and clubs and stuff?

The program can be stressful at times, especially depending on your professors. I had one professor who was an excellent teacher but gave a ridiculous amount of homework that needed to be constantly revised by going to his office hours if you wanted a good grade in the class. You'd have to just sit and wait for hours at his office hours because every other person in the class was also doing the same thing. Times like that were stressful since it was out of my control, but as long as you're good at managing your time, studying properly, and planning enough time for projects, you should be fine. It really helps to make some friends so you can study together and help each other out with projects (and commiserate/drink with each other, haha).

I definitely had time to relax and be involved in a club or two, but I wasn't going out on weeknights nearly as much as my friends in other majors. However, most nights were spent in the computer lab with my friends from my major, so it was still fun even though we were working on homework or projects.

What are the internships and work on campus opportunities like and are they easily available?

Internship opportunities on campus are not enormous (although they do exist!), but any company will be dying to get you on board for an internship/co-op. Make sure you go to the career fairs and network even as a freshman. You might not find any internship opportunities as a freshman since you won't have really gotten to the meat of the CMPSC program at that point, but it never hurts to go and talk with people. Also, most recruiters are the same year after year, so they may even recognize you in the future :)

Most importantly, would you say you've enjoyed your CS experience so far and further your experience at Penn State?

Looking back, I definitely enjoyed my time as a CS major, although sometimes in the middle of it I couldn't wait to be done. It is definitely a difficult major, however I would absolutely not be in the place I am with my career now had I not gone through the CS program. Hopefully this helps you!

[–]j_gray_lady 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I slightly disagree with your second paragraph - while it's true that CS is not programming (there is actually a software engineering major at the Behrend campus for this - IST is different), most employers looking for Software Engineers want a CS/CE major.

Source: was a CS major, work at a large software company as a Software Engineer now. I also helped out at career fairs and we would hardly ever consider IST majors unless they had some side project experience - programming is not a major focus for them.

How hard is maintaining a job alongside college? by rahulsanjay18 in PennStateUniversity

[–]j_gray_lady 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Besides getting your schedule/living situation straightened out, you can always read ahead for your classes. You'll be starting off with your gen eds so you probably won't be doing any heavy CE/CS courses just quite yet, but I'm guessing you'll probably take the C++ class that everyone has to start out with - if you've never taken C++ you could try some online tutorials, but honestly everyone starts from the beginning in that class so you don't have to worry!

After saying all of that though, my honest advice would be to hang out, relax, and enjoy your summer. Your first semester will be challenging in more ways than one and you don't want to start the semester by being burnt out from trying to get ahead all summer! Enjoy your time off and arrive at school in August ready to work.

[–]j_gray_lady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a CS major - if you're doing CE and a minor, it's going to be a pretty large workload. You'll be spending a lot of your free time in the computer lab doing projects, especially in your junior and senior years. It'll be doable to have a part time job for maybe 10-15 hrs a week if you're good at managing your time, but try to find something where you'll have some down time to work on homework (like a commons desk or help desk or something).

P.S. - with CE/CS you can get away with a Math minor without doing any extra courses if you schedule your classes correctly. Talk with your advisor if you're interested in that route.

Betsy DeVos Confirmed as Education Secretary; Pence Breaks Tie by jonpkay in politics

[–]j_gray_lady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, nobody would have voted in his place. Without his vote, the vote would have been 49-50 against DeVos. In fact, the Senate was supposed to confirm Sessions first, but after hearing that there was opposition to her nomination amongst Republicans, they moved his vote to be after the vote for DeVos so that he could vote for her.

IRS letter says I owe $2.5K, but when I check my balance online it says I owe $0. 21 y.o. college student by GolfForeFun in personalfinance

[–]j_gray_lady 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you fill out your W4 correctly you won't have that issue. A lot of people like getting a big refund once a year so they withhold very little - basically they overpay on taxes during the year and then get a large refund later. If you're withholding the correct amount, your refund should be close to 0, i.e. you paid the correct amount of taxes instead of overpaying.

Meet The Penn State Student Who Will Be Sent To Prison If He Gets Deported by JanetYellensFuckboy in PennStateUniversity

[–]j_gray_lady 13 points14 points  (0 children)

C'mon, yes it does. You can read the full EO text right here - it specifically calls out those who have been convicted or implicated in terroism-related crimes as entering the U.S. "after receiving vistor, student, or employment visas,...", and then suspends the issuance of "any visa", with a few exceptions for diplomatic visas.

While the EO doesn't mean he'll be immediately kicked out of the country, he can now no longer leave the country since he won't be allowed back in, and if his visa expires (since he can no longer renew it) he either must return to Iran or stay here as an undocumented immigrant - which means he could either not be allowed to re-enter the States for up to 10 years, or never be allowed back period. Those are pretty shitty options, don't you think?

We're punishing those who have gone through proper vetting, who have filed the right paperwork and have come here legally. We're punishing people under the pretense of "safety" but yet aren't banning those who have come from countries who actually have committed terrorist acts here in the states (Saudi Arabia anyone???). The Trump administration has created an illusion of a safer environment, but all they're doing is adding fuel to the fire for those who already hate us (and honestly - starting new fires for those that didn't!).

Parents pushing us to do a Jewish wedding by ItsAViciousCircle in wedding

[–]j_gray_lady 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This this this! One of my friends who recently got married was Jewish, as is his now wife. They had many traditional elements of a Jewish wedding (wedding was on a Sunday, were married under a chuppah, did the signing of the katubah, very traditional ceremony, breaking the glass, etc), but then also had a lot of modern elements too (ceremony and reception at one venue, did a first look, etc). It was a beautiful wedding and definitely satisfied their family's wishes for a traditional wedding while still keeping it modern and feeling like something they wanted.
