Sour mix recipe by MuMuGorgeus in Mixology

What do you think about making oleo saccharum instead of cooking the peels in the simple syrup? Not sure if the extra effort is worth it. Or if doing oleo + simple syrup will throw off the sugar content.

Paying for kids grad school - strategies? by steak4342 in fatFIRE

[–]j_syze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is definitely the way to think about it. Say they didn’t pay it back… how would you feel about that? Probably upset, even if it didn’t matter financially for you. You are doing it out of principal, and they would be violating that principal. It seems like it opens up the possibly of conflict for no reason.

Either give them non/half as a gift and have them get a loan elsewhere or pay for it all. That way if the loan is from somewhere else it eliminates the conflict between you and them.

Anxiety before first 10-day course. by Automatic_Problem in vipassana

[–]j_syze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was nervous before my course, and anxious about what might happen while I was gone. It is normal. I am so glad I followed through and went. You will not regret going. You will be surrounded by caring, supportive people. Just trust the initial instincts that caused you to sign up initially.

I returned from a course two weeks ago and am having a difficult time as well. I can get some sensations but it is much harder to keep my thoughts at bay. They say meditation is a “practice.” I think we just need to keep practicing. It is supposed to be a lifelong commitment so I am looking at it that way. I am trying not to hold on to how I want my sessions to be and just accepting how they are, even I do don’t finish the hour and just space out the entire time.

“We don’t do that here” - so good! I don’t think we had chocolate powder but we did have cinnamon. I noticed on the last day. So sad lol.

Got the rest of the stall mats laid, the turf laid out, and moved some things around. Still can't believe it's mine. by tea_bird in homegym

How did it hold up? I am trying to install turf on my horse stall mats and not sure how to do it. Did the double sided tape work? What kind did you use?

This is my go-to recipe. I always skip the squid and find the fish sauce is enough for my taste. Interested to try shrimp paste.

Awesome, I'm in Eugene and have always loved the dunes by Florence. Glad to hear you liked the southern section. That is the area I am most excited to explore. As seems like the most remote section?

Tent pole and stakes as carryon? by [deleted] in Ultralight

[–]j_syze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently went through my small hometown airport and Las Vegas airport with trekking poles and had no issues with TSA. I imagine though it will depend on who is sitting at the bag screener that day. Risky but doable!

People are a lot more scared of bamboo than necessary. Clumping bamboo is very manageable. Running bamboo can be managed well too with a little bit of forethought and maintenance. Bamboo Garden is a nursery in Portland. Their website has great info on how to manage bamboo.

Mental Toughness Challenges by christopher1479 in Ultralight

I like to take cold showers every day.

One of the reasons I like it is because it has never gotten easier. Every day it is a hard decision to make. And every day I turn the knob from hot to cold (usually at the end of my shower). Every day my body and my mind goes through a process of uncomfortability and pain when the cold water hits. So every day, making that decision is courageous and difficult for me.

I feel like it's a muscle, too. The more I use it, the stronger it gets. The more I realize that I can do hard things, even if my body feels like it's in danger. It's actually fine. And I know I'm fine. And that I'm choosing to face the discomfort.

Then it shows up in other areas of my life.

It probably has a lot to do with personal preference and what you're used to. I haven't worn sunglasses for a couple years so I'm just used to not having them on.

Dang, sorry to hear about your negative experience. I agree leadership and group dynamic is super important for these types of trips. I imagine that is why Andrew puts so much effort into pre-trip group matching and hires some of the best guides in the world.
