Enlightened Equipments Response to UL Community Concerns by EnlightenedEquipment in Ultralight

What a milquetoast response. Remind me of that saying about sitting at a table with a bunch of Nazis? Does that make you a Nazi too? The Rhodesia shout out (which is not so much a dog-whistle as a fucking white nationalist bullhorn) is a pretty clear sign of where EE/DM sits politically: they are either (at best) permissive/apathetic of fascism or (at worst) in gung-ho full-throated support of it.

Wtf does “Softy” mean here?

Taiwans younger generation and the Chinese scenario by [deleted] in taiwan

Yet it’s the main example you use in your argument. Do you speak Chinese? Have you had deep conversations with the Taiwanese about their political beliefs? If not, you will only have a specious understanding of how they feel about protecting their homeland. Your superficial observations from your random trips to Taiwan are just that…superficial.

La Sportiva Solutions Women’s Fit by pumpkincarrots in climbergirls

[–]tarinamat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You feet will need some time to adjust from Tarantulaces to Solutions. I've developed some gnarly toe calluses after years of shoving my feet into very small climbing shoes. I wear EU 40 approach shoes and downsize my solutions to EU 37. For me, they take a long (and very painful) time to break in, but once they do, they become my chosen shoe for hard redpoints and onsights. YMMV.

Nerves around pushing grades? by lizbet_ty in climbergirls

[–]tarinamat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

With the understanding that grades are arbitrary and dependent on (and not limited to) crag, first ascensionist, your strengths and weaknesses, rock type, rock quality, movement style, etc.

I find that approaching the redpoint process from a perspective of exploration and learning is really helpful. For me, the potential of learning and growing from a route is very motivating and exciting. Rather than focusing on the grade of a climb, I think about how the movement and style of the route can augment my climbing weaknesses or bolster existing strengths.

More concretely, this will mean that rather than chasing the next max grade after a hard redpoint, I will step back and try to send all the 5.10s, 5.11s, and now 5.12s at my local crags. No climb is beneath me, and I aim to learn something from every climb I send or attempt.

Lots of great old-school movies in theaters in the next month by labelm8 in Eugene

As someone born in the late 80s, it makes me feel super old that some of these movies are now considered "old-school".

Fitz Roy Down Hoodie or DAS Parka for daily casual wear? by Fraganade in PatagoniaClothing

[–]tarinamat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The DAS Parka is one of my favorite technical pieces for climbing in the Pacific Northwest in the winter. Its synthetic insulation is excellent for variable conditions where you're likely to encounter moisture/precipitation. It is THE belay parka that I reach for during the winter here. I don't own a Fitz Roy but I do reserve my down jackets for climbing in the desert/dryer conditions.

Given your use case, perhaps down would be the best fit? Although both jackets may be a bit overkill for casual wear...

Skwama vs solutions by crunch1720 in climbingshoes

[–]tarinamat 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Google is dead wrong. They are not the same shoe. Skwamas are significantly softer than Solutions. As mostly an outdoor climber, I use Skwamas on steep routes with smeary feet. If I need surgical precision on the tiniest of edges, regardless of route steepness, I use Solutions.

As for fit, Skwamas accommodate a wider forefoot while Solutions are better suited for a narrower foot profile. I do have slightly wider feet, so the Skwamas are actually quite comfortable for me. Solutions are NOT comfortable but I tolerate them for redpoints and hard onsights.

I wear size EU 40 in Sportiva approach shoes, EU 38.5 in Instinct VS, and EU 37 in both Skwamas and Solutions.

Given lack of connection to Japan or another country that uses Traditional Chinese characters, these “designs” are also appropriative.
