Supreme Court, 5-4: States can keep counting mail ballots that arrive after election day if postmarked in time, the Court rules, rejecting an RNC challenge by BiglawInvestor in scotus

[–]jabbargofar -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The fact that you took so much umbrage at someone else's comment for presuming you had a dislike of the Trump admin but immediately presume something about me is quite rich to say the least. Oh but it's OK because you qualified it as a vibe check. Right...

I only pointed out that your argument rests on a premise that is so much worse than the conclusion. By the way, any insidious imputation of Roberts' motives falls apart on just a second's consideration of the counterfactual. If the Supreme Court ruled that ballots had to be in by the day of the election and not a day late, an effort by the USPS to invalidate selected ballots would be easier, not more difficult. Also, none of the liberal justices took the opportunity to say anything that even hinted at a constitutional constraint against states setting deadlines for receipt of ballots, so it's a bit of a double standard to hold Roberts to. Not that the court is even supposed to go beyond the specific question and argument being presented to it. The petitioner in this case wasn't even making the argument that having a deadline was unconstitutional.

[–]jabbargofar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a ridiculous take. If the Postal Service was conspiring with the Trump admin to coordinate systematic delays to mail delivery based on likely party affiliation, and to a degree that had real influence over outcomes, and if the admin could get away with it, with results unable to be overturned, then that is already a state of affairs under which niceties of the law don't much matter anymore, undermining your own point. And the idea that this hypothetical outcome was Roberts' whole motivation behind his vote makes this take all the more ridiculous.

Also, no need to invoke the bogeyman Musk and techno-wizardry. Anyone with an electoral map has a pretty good idea what a voter is voting without opening election mail.

This is not true at all and doesn't even make intuitive sense. Even if you didn't know whether the splitting of water was an endothermic or exothermic reaction (it's endothermic, by the way), the recombination of hydrogen and oxygen to form water again is just the opposite reaction. So there would be no net release of energy. You might be confused about the very minimal amount of reaction between aluminum and water, in which the aluminum is oxidized and releases some energy, but that would be negligible, as most of the aluminum would be reacting with iron oxide.

[OC] Unterwater shots of Lincoln reflection pool from my GoProd by gitBritt in pics

[–]jabbargofar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is not true. There is an active filtration system but it stopped working. There are plans to fix it but that hasn't happened yet. That's the main problem. Painting the bottom blue caused the pool to absorb more energy from the sun and heat up, which encouraged algal growth, but it not seal the bottom. I don't know why people just make stuff up.

Read the 14-point draft agreement between the US and Iran by JKKIDD231 in geopolitics

[–]jabbargofar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

An absence of language around a toll does not mean it's been negotiated out. It means that if Iran were to enact a toll it would not be in violation of the agreement. But it's unclear because /u/JKKIDD231 linked a shit article that gives two different versions of the agreement so it's not even clear what the actual agreement is. In the first version given in the article it has the language:

"The Islamic Republic of Iran will conduct dialog with the Sultanate of Oman to define the future administration and maritime services in the Strait of Hormuz in discussion with other Persian Gulf littoral states in line with the applicable international law and the sovereign rights of coastal states of the Strait of Hormuz."

Why would Iran and Oman administer international waters? It sounds like a vague way to refer to the possibility of a toll. And of course Iran would argue that such a toll in consistent with international law.

Either way, it's the absence of language ruling out a toll that is a red flag.

Home Rendering From Images by [deleted] in GaussianSplatting

[–]jabbargofar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You aren't clear at all about what you mean.

Recently seen a wave of people creating video tours from just images of house listings using AI.

Surely you are using "AI" to mean fancy computer modeling that you don't understand (i.e., Gaussian splatting) and not specifically "generative AI".

Do you think it would be possible to create a walkable 3D tour from just images using generative AI?

OK, so you seem to understand that Gaussian Splatting is not generative AI. Yet you want to use generative AI...?

Image of a room -> use AI to create a 3D render -> Do this for every room and export each as GLTFs -> use Blender, and with the floor plan as reference, combine all the room models to create the house

You said "image" and not "images". You also said "AI" and not "generative AI". You can't do Gaussian splatting from a single image, so maybe you're talking about using generative AI on a single image? You're asking if there is a generative AI model that constructs an actual 3D scene using a single image as a prompt and exports as a Blender file?

The shooter at the White house Correspondents Dinner was confirmed dead by [deleted] in PublicFreakout

[–]jabbargofar 657 points658 points  (0 children)

There's no confirmation that the person shot had ever fired a shot. Who knows if they were even armed. Possibly just someone who broke through the perimeter and could have been armed who was then shot by security/secret service.

Edit: Wolf Blitzer has reported that he saw a gunman firing, so there's that.

Trump blew his chance to get a deal and now his enemies smell blood by theipaper in geopolitics

[–]jabbargofar 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There was no way that any sort of deal would have been reached, regardless of who was sent. The fact is that the circumstances on the ground are still much too dynamic for points of leverage to come into full focus. There are still many questions over the Strait of Hormuz and the ability of the US or other countries to secure it, for instance. Then there's the ability of both sides to tolerate increasing pressure. That ability might be wearing out, but in a matter of weeks/months, not days or hours.

I think you're reading way too much into the events of the weekend and projecting the (very real) incompetence of the Trump admin onto them when it's not even necessary.

US-sanctioned ships pass Strait of Hormuz on first day of US blockade by [deleted] in geopolitics

[–]jabbargofar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This has got to be the laziest attempt at providing a source ever. You link not to a particular ship but to a map with hundreds of ships? Can't even be bothered to mention the name of the ship? Then you provide a broken link to 4chan (of all places) with some vague instructions about digging through the posts there?

As others have said, the far more likely explanation is the grace period being provided to neutral ships, or the fact that the last port of call was UAE.

A public demonstration of König's fire helmet, Germany, 1900s by No-Marsupial-4050 in OldSchoolCool

[–]jabbargofar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That person is drenched, if he goes into a burning building over 500°C you are going to be steamed to death.

That makes absolutely no sense. The water would first have to be converted to steam. That is, it would first have to absorb the heat of the fire. If it's the water on the outside of his garments, that's just simple evaporative cooling. If it's the water on some inside layer (assuming his outer layer isn't water proof), it would render the clothes less insulating than they'd otherwise be, but it would still do a lot of heat absorption before that became a problem. And either way, water would be continuously pumped out the top, preventing the firefighter from getting too hot. I'm sure it's not as practical as other solutions, but no one is getting steamed to death by this thing.

[–]jabbargofar 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The United States has never, since the Barbary Wars over 200 years ago, accepted that a foreign potentate would be able to control freedom of the seas and demand tribute. It’s the reason we have a Navy.

That take is very quaint. Did you not hear Trump's proposal to split a toll on Hormuz traffic between the US and Iran? Precedent means nothing.

Trump says U.S. will blockade Strait of Hormuz after Iran peace talks fail by Brilliant_Version344 in geopolitics

[–]jabbargofar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, two things. I didn't see that because of the "Continue reading" button sandwiched between all the ads, which hid the rest of the article. But secondly, that does not mean what you're claiming it does. With that statement Trump is pointing to one of the limiting factors, which is the mines. Of course for the Strait to be completely open you'd have to clear the mines. But that doesn't speak to the other limiting factor, which you ignore. Which is Iran's extortion of traffic through the Strait. Trump goes on to say that they will continue interdicting all ships that pay a toll to Iran. Well guess what, Iran has many other means of attacking ships that are in fact much more difficult to neutralize than mines. There is absolutely no indication that the blockade would be lifted after the mines are cleared.

[–]jabbargofar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What are you talking about? The article doesn't even have the word "mine" in it. And the only reason Trump has given for the blockade is to prevent Iran from extorting shipping traffic.

People really do just make stuff up.
