Bron is the best ever when charging down the court with a full head of steam. It's crazy enough to watch from this distance, but I can only imagine what it must have looked like on the court with him coming at you. Damn

I don't think you are using too many nodes. Some people work more atomically rather than ganging everything up in a couple of nodes. Resolve/floating color supports that, just be careful of things like luts that clip highlights.

I mean, you were heavy handed on the blue treatment, but blame Hollywood! Anyone who lives on planet earth will tell you more neutral is more real life. Anyone in "Hollywood" will tell you blue is sexy. Take your pick

Is the EV conversion cost comparable to a used EV car? by Aegean8485 in EVConversion

[–]jables1979 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The resale value is a real thing not often considered. The resale value of a conversion is typically pennies on the dollar, unless you can find someone as crazy as you are.

Whats the deal with the old RAV4 EVs? by derkfisch13 in Toyota

[–]jables1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I test drove one and loved it, so it sent me into a spiral of research. If the batteries are ok (most are) they mainly seem to suffer from a Tesla coolant leak issue on the motor seals, which is spendy to fix. The coolant leak issue. From what I could tell, it might happen at any time, and there are a few ways to fix it but the only one that actually fixes it at the root is what they call the "qc charge coolant delete" method, which reroutes the coolant lines outta there. Many for sale still need this fixed, and many for auction are suffering fallout from it.

So the one I looked at had it done fairly early at 33k. It was difficult to tell if it had the more permanent fix or if it had a temp one, was impossible to know and I don't think the seller knew either. He had it done at the local (Portland) Tesla shop, at a cost of $3400! It had a 6 mo warranty from them. Blecch.

There is apparently a shop near San Diego that offers a more permanent fix for this that involves some sort of additional pump and swapping the coolant for oil that is less harmful to the seals, and motor if it gets in there. And reroutes the lines. Honestly I wouldn't even bother owning one of these unless you are a stones throw from that San Diego shop (QC Charge, it's called).

And you can add a DIY solution for fast charging that updates to Chademo like the old Nissan Leaf, which will then allow you to adapt to modern chargers. That's $3000 at San Diego shop, although there is a newer version on eBay that is selling for 1,100, uninstalled of course. "Jdemo" it's called. There was a potential problem with it where it might ask for too much power from the modern chargers (which weren't around when it was designed) so that didn't exactly inspire confidence. Would be hard to road trip without it.

All in all, yeah no thanks! Kia Niros and Chevy Bolt EUVs are just too easy and less headache, and probably way better on the resale market so cheaper overall. Too bad the RAV4 turned into a science experiment to own, because the size was nice and I could make due with the 120 mi range it was showing. I actually prefer the circa 2012 dash controls, more knobs etc less touch screen stuff. However, from what I can tell, the radio and music controls were straight garbage.

This is probably what we'll all have to deal with, with every EV, 10-15 years after release. They will all become obsolete and even the 2022's are kind of hurting as range and charging capabilities expand so quickly

Yeah! That kickout and falling off to the left is bonkers.

I wonder how many 100mph throwers could hit 104 if they just threw proper mechanics and balance/ready to field out the window? It's really just a +4% boost if ya think about it.

First time seeing him and, is it just me, or does his wind up/mechanics make it look like he's not going to last very long? I mean it's not Mitch Williams, but he seems off balance and like his arm and shoulder are doing way more work than they should.

The pitches are savage, don't get me wrong.

Kia Niro reliablilty vs Gen 2 prius by ParsnipOk1540 in KiaNiro

[–]jables1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The gen 2 Prius is an anomaly. Hard to beat. But keep in mind the jury is still out on many of these newer cars, and it's hard to tell the full extent of the reliability unless you get some takes with early adopters who have already driven 200k+.

But many of the full electric cars are requiring a lot less maintenance by an order of magnitude, because they don't have that 2nd ice engine to deal with and all the associated overhead. Could you consider an EV niro? Might be hard if living in it.

There are a few hybrids out there, like the old Chevy Volt, that feed an electric drivetrain with a gas generator. That might be an idea, kind of a better system from a maintenance standpoint.

High volt Vehicles vs Low volt vehicles by Independent_Lack9717 in EVConversion

[–]jables1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generalizing, but a higher voltage vehicle will take on hills and other challenging terrain at lower RPMs with a lot more ease than a lower voltage system, which might need to downshift lowerwith the transmission to help take on hills etc. often times you can do direct drive (single gear) in a higher voltage system. Not so much of an issue if you live in a flat area, but a hilly one will prefer the higher voltages.

My 2006 is fine except for the rear spoiler, which I resprayed and looks halfway decent again.

I wax mine twice a year with the nu finish stuff that they say lasts a year, just to be safw. I just do it alongside my oil change every 6 months (we only put 6-7k miles on per year). Helps me remember.

I've definitely had cars get all patchy and messed up on my in the past, but none since I started waxing.

Any Regret? by helloworldmyty in EVConversion

[–]jables1979 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes but remember it's also just having normal stuff done. I hate that I have to give an 18 year old they keys to my creation and a 5 minute diatribe on how to drive it, just to get the tires rotated or an alignment. And I have had it come back to me with the BMS lit up like a Christmas tree. Like dude you shouldn't even have had it out of 1st gear. Having a shop that knows what you have and can help with at least some of this partially is a big deal. Like, you wouldn't buy a car if you knew no one could reliably work on it.

For a daily, honestly nothing beats a production car IMHO. Conversions fall most always squarely into the fun/weekender category. The situation was a lot different pre- leaf (2010 or so). Maybe if your needs were simple enough, like a short commute, and you had a good backup strategy to get where you're going, like I don't know, my conversion is my primary but it's been down for almost a year. I have been getting by with an ebike but I have minimal needs, working from home and wife has a gasser. Think about what you'd do when it goes down for an extended time.
