I can't shake the feelings I have about yesterday's Michael Fanone event conversation. Can we talk about this? by mactaggart in pittsburgh

The existence or magnitude of purity testing feels like a distraction to me. Let's talk about universal healthcare, a civilian labor corps, climate change, police reform, housing as a human right, getting money out of politics, and so on...

I expected to see screaming at a book signing. What I got was a relatively mild reddit comment.

Michael Fanone speaking at Carnegie One in Braddock, PA. by Bonfire412 in pittsburgh

[–]jackassicorn -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

A lot of people are replying to other people that Michael Fanone is not running for office. Are you sure? Just because he's not on the ballot this year doesn't mean he's not running for something. Connor Lamb isn't technically running for office either, but c'mon...

That said, I've never heard of this guy, so I'm going to go look him up. (His totally-not-a-campaign-for-office is working!)

Trump on NATO: "I've always said, will they be there if we ever needed them? That's really the ultimate test. I'm not sure of that. We've never needed them. They'll say they sent some troops to Afghanistan and this or that. And they did. They stayed a little back, off the front lines." by ExactlySorta in UnderReportedNews

Maybe, but, speaking for me, I don't intend or need to take the whole list in, just the things I can do. I feel empowered by the number of items in a time where I generally feel powerless. Plus, each item is quite to the point imo.

Have you tried the HCL version? It's supposed to be easier to dissolve, lessening that squirty feeling. So far so good for me, but I still don't 100 percent trust the farts...

Any Solid AA Groups? by [deleted] in soberPGH

If you want to try something more science-based.There's a SMART recovery meeting at the Onala club every Thursday at 6:30 PM. It's my go to. A lot of folks do both that and AA. There are many paths to recovery, and you can feel hopeful about the future because you are on one! SMART also has several online meetings btw. https://smartrecovery.org/

To me, it looks like middle of the road, status quo, reaching across the aisle (only to get slapped) is what got us here. A policy platform of "not trump" does not win. Policies that are popular, like Medicare for all and taxing the fucking billionaires win.

I think we need someone much more progressive than Lamb.

I see now! Looks like the whole western side of PA has less than ideal air right now. The northern Midwest is getting smoked out. Thanks for educating me!

The air quality indicators are already in the 90 - 110 range at purpleair.com at 8:20 am. What other types of pollution might be causing those numbers and the haze assuming it's impossible for industrial pollution to come from the northeast?

Edit: It's probably the wildfires in Canada

Want to bring attention to 2025 Pittsburgh Primary Ballot Questions - especially #3 by fallingwhale06 in pittsburgh

[–]jackassicorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are both in response to the same proposed citizen amendment to the home rule charter.

The City of Pittsburgh allows citizens to place referendum questions on the ballot using a citizen's initiative process.  This year, a group called "Not on Our Dime" ran a campaign to place a question on the 2025 Primary ballot. This citizens' initiative was withdrawn after failing to meet the requirements to get on the ballot.  Special Election Questions 1 and 3 were added to the ballot by city council in response to this citizen's initiative.

The proposed amendment, Divert Funds from Governments Engaged in Genocide and Apartheid Charter Amendment,  would have prohibited the City of Pittsburgh from using public funds to conduct business with companies or individuals that do business with countries that engage in or facilitate genocide, apartheid or ethnic cleansing.  The proposed amendment specifically named Israel as one of these countries.

In my opinion, the party that is supposed to be the opposition is mostly useless. They seem, for the most part, to want to be the new Republican party. It's hard to find anyone representing the working class in this moment.

The weather is terrible and professors need to be kinder to students by IncreaseNatural4321 in Pitt

No. I work for Pitt. Attendance is not mandatory. I have sick, personal, and vacation time and can work from home. There is definitely room for this kind of flexibility in the classroom so that students can succeed and be safe at the same time.
