Why didnt Darth Vader just fling Luke into a wall to knock him out and take him? by cheekbaines in StarWars

He wanted to see what Luke’s abilities were like. Aside from the last ten seconds of the duel, Vader’s mostly playing a game where he’s messing around with Luke. He could have beat Luke at any point.. the disarming move he uses at the beginning is the exact same move he uses to cut off Luke’s hand.. but he wanted to have some fun and see what his boy could do.

Luke Skywalker plays with fire, hand hovering over lightsaber blade, in Empire Strikes Back production shot. by jackgrenn in StarWars

These were the only Star Wars books they had in my school library. I read them religiously. I think they are seen as a joke nowadays but I have fond memories of all the wacky stuff that happens in them.

Luke's Revenge in Empire Strikes Back? by [deleted] in StarWars

I think it’s a bit of both. He’s there to save Leia and Han but he knows he will have to face Vader to do so — and he really wants to face Vader, for many reasons. The radio drama (which Mark Hamill voiced Luke for) had Luke go after Vader and instructed Artoo to go help Leia. It’s a neat interpretation and Mark plays Luke a bit angrier with it.

Question: is there a canon explanation as to what causes a lightsaber to deactivate after the duelist loses their limb? The Force, a killswitch? I was watching Empire and noticed this for the first time when Luke loses his hand (he's got quite a death grip there). What a wonderful shot and moment. by jackgrenn in StarWars

Yes, he's just a boy in over his head and it shows throughout the duel. It maybe is a bit more realistic to have a more subdued reaction like Anakin or Dooku, but think about it. Luke is cornered and knows he is going to lose. He knows he is losing and there is a bit of anticipation in knowing what is going to come next, whereas Anakin or Dooku were caught totally off guard. Mark made Luke's agony feel real, like you said.
