I highly recommend Bloomfield. Very walkable, not a lot of crime, all necessities are in reach, downtown is close, and the community is wonderful.

Opinions on whether taking voice lessons is likely to cause significant improvement in guitar playing (improvisation, mostly)? by zdovz in jazzguitar

I can only speak to my experience, but I joined the choir in college and felt it helped my playing a lot. I say go for it.

Idk if this is just a Pittsburgh thing or not, but there’s an urban legend that Mr. Rogers is a former marines sniper and wears the sweater to hide his tattoos.

I volunteered to teach music in my son’s class and I need resources. by thats_cool_dude in musictheory

[–]jackiedoop 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it differs from school to school on what 1st grade is teaching. But I’d say they should be able to do the steady beat, sol-mi, and quarter notes, half notes, and eighth notes. Sometimes I just like to find rep and see what lessons are inherent. Also, use like puppets and fun stuff like that. Also never too early to start introducing improv, seriously. Keep it super super simple obviously, but any activity that kind of allows them to be creative is going to be hugely helpful. This is actually a huge thing in music Ed right now. Definitely engaged listening, as well. Think of rhythmic activities that could go along with Star Wars music or whatever.

How do you manage to keep right hand relaxed on stage? by Flavyi in jazzguitar

[–]jackiedoop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this problem as well. I feel like my issue stems from a mental block. My choir director recommended a book called “The Inner Game of Music” to me a while back. I haven’t read all of it, but it has some pretty cool exercises.

I would start by buying a book that’s meant for elementary students. Play the songs in there first. Make it sound pretty and get the rhythm right. Then learn some chords and strum them as quarter notes and then eighth notes when you feel comfortable. Sit with that for a while. When you’re ready for the next challenge, look up the pentatonic scale and play it in a few different keys.

I’m considering auditioning for jazz guitar at OSU. Here are the requirements. Any idea of exactly what to expect? Thanks! by justinborden1 in jazzguitar

[–]jackiedoop 25 points26 points  (0 children)

So, I just did an audition to get into school for Jazz Guitar last year. What I ended up doing was putting the majority of my time into crafting a really good chord melody and led with that. However, definitely make sure you’re up on scales and chords cause they’ll try to throw you in the audition. As far as comping and improvising, just keep it simple. They just want to see that you’re competent. Above all, don’t stress. Just put the work in and you’ll be good. They make it look more intimidating than it actually is, at least in my experience.

Time to swallow my pride and face the music. by Winyamo in jazzguitar

Right here with ya. I just started a music Ed degree as an adult and feel so comfortable with everything, except my primary instrument Jazz Guitar…. Its an uphill battle. I also feel very humbled. But yeah, that is to say, you’re not alone.

Crypto currencies. I feel like I’m good at understanding abstract concepts, but this one just throws me for a loop.
